Largely due to all the insecurities associated with Facebook, I don't mess with it much anymore - just a couple of business (fabric store and game) sites I 'follow' - and before that, very little. I have been thinking seriously of closing out my account, because I so rarely mess with it. I told my younger son the newest about Facebook, but he seemed unconcerned. Maybe if I send him the link to the information, he will pay more attention.

Frankly, I'd have to doubt it. my granddaughter didn't seem too attentive when I pointed out how much she might regret being so cavalier about what she does online.
and, frankly, AFAIK closing out your account won't really get rid of anything you put in there- it's like google- type once, wonder forever.
@Chip- try this comment on the skullsecurity blog and see if having hotfile links helps. I can always up them someplace if not...
Well I downloaded one of the hotlink files from the comment mentioned by goodgotd. I found out there are currently 15,212 people who share my first name...Lester. I'd download and look into more of this if I felt like it but I'm lazy and don't feel like it. I don't care if people know my name and info...I have it public for that reason lol.

But it occurred to me that this is public information that Facebook puts out, I'm assuming for search engines or whatever, and that it wouldn't be right for me to keep it private. Why waste Facebook's bandwidth and make everybody scrape it, right?

goodgotd, I understand what you are saying about once you've 'put it out there' it's out there for good. That's really the reason I'm considering closing my account; I'm not putting anything in/on there for anyone to be able to see. When I first joined Facebook, some months ago, I had a brief chat with an acquaintance about the raccoons that like to hang around her house, and maybe a couple of other similar-type things. I don't work, but if I did, I doubt I'd lose my job over that kind of chat...lol. Also, the boss probably wouldn't fire me for trying out Farmville, or the other game I played on there...Bejeweled, I think. I never posted any pictures, or any info about myself. Oh yeah, one other thing I did, was to change my account name. Anyone looking for me will be out of luck...(chuckle).

The way I see it is....I don't say or do anything on FB I wouldn't say or do in real life so what have I to hide??? I'm not cheating on my husband nor have I secretly married a second one. I'm not moonlighting or doing anything illegal etc. If you're living a clean and honest life you have nothing to hide and if someone wants to pin something on you that you haven't done they can do it whether you're on FB or not. They can also find you AND get your personal info whether you're on there or not. Also, with camera phones around every corner anyone can snap your picture anywhere at any time without you even knowing it. I have only put minimal info on FB but I just can't see "living in fear". If someone wants to get me they're going to do it whether I'm on FB or not, whether I'm online or not, whether I go out the door or hide inside the house or whatever. You do what you can, but you can only do so much and it really doesn't matter if you're on a social network or whatever else. Yes, there are things like kids who have posted videos of themselves falling down drunk which has cost them jobs and such, but that isn't FB's fault it's the stupid kids fault.
My father wouldn't even know how to turn on a pc but you'd be surprised what info is out there about him. So what's the point? Just MHO :)

And I don't think companies will refuse jobs to anyone buying fertilizer ,if their Farmville crops are too small either.LOL.
But some time ago, the main issue with FB was the disclosure of people's profiles and pictures/vids to all (even if all of this was meant and supposed to have been set to be visible to friends only)

Being on FB has also led to requests to join linked in, and several other sites like these. I did join FB because a friend of my son's said he was on there and that's about the only way I can get info. on his and the grands 'doings' since they live on the west coast and I'm on the east coast but I'm not joining anything else. Personally I prefer sticking to plain old emails!

Copmom....Oh I do agree with you on that....I prefer emails.....but unfortunately a lot of the relatives and fiends I keep in contact with on FB just won't do emails at all....go figure.
As far as the games on FB....I played Farmtown, Farmville, Treasure Isle, Yoville, etc. They were fun for a while but then they just became so repetitive it was sickening. I mean just how many times do I want to plow, plant and harvest crops just to earn a few bucks and/or level up? Then when you level up......whoopie! You get.....new seeds to plow, plant and harvest. The design part I liked, it was fun and interesting to figure out how and where to put things and all, but once I did that it just became boring and humdrum....so I quit them all. :)

BK, just the other day I suggested to my youngest son that he make a Yuku or Yahoo group for his Facebook friends/contacts, since it is the same people he chats with on there. I told him you can make Yuku and Yahoo groups private, if you want to, and you wouldn't even be able to read/see the group's home page. He might consider it. He really doesn't seem to understand/realize the dangers of Facebook, or else he isn't divulging to me that he is starting to see the light on it.

Even Emails aren't as secure or erasable (not very, and good luck depending on the service used) as one might wish- how do you know deleting an email doesn't just hide it from you?
I would like to see a *lot* more people using encrypted email to at least annoy somebody looking through, say, a Gmail account. I dunno if google is the god of war, but facebook ought to be Phobos. (Fear, in a word)
That is, if the younger generation wasn't so clueless about careless typing come back to bite them in delicate places decades later.
