I am having problems with Alawar and their games and it is this file that is giving me problems with every game their .wrp file? It comes up with an error. I can not play games downloaded from Alawar because of it.
Does anyone know how you open an .wrp file

All of Alawar's games have a .wrp.exe file. It's essential to the games. EACH game has one and it is customized for the game. If you have one that is not working, I suggest you try to re-install the game. If it's a full game, you should have the registration key handy if needed.

I know that. None of them are working not even the trials. I downloaded alawar gamebox for the free game of the month, but none of the games work. It is something with the .wrp file in all of them. Something is causing it. This one program tells me I don't have anything to open that file type of file with. That is why I was wondering where it came from.

Odd. It must be trying to ShellExecute the .wrp file. Make sure you don't have any file associations with the .wrp extension.

I'd suggest asking Alawar directly. If anyone knows what they use the file for, they would (hopefully).

The odd thing about this is I do have other .wrp alawar references in the registry. Games that work fine. From Play! The Ultimate Casual game collection. It is only the games on alawar.com that are giving me the problem.
Faulting application LunchRush.wrp.exe, version 1.5.0.0, time stamp 0x48189552, faulting module LunchRush.wrp.exe, version 1.5.0.0, time stamp 0x48189552, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x001123c6, process id 0x2454, application start time 0x01caad00768c1354.
A slew of those for all games that I downloaded from alawar. The games that I purchased elsewhere with the .wrp work fine if they are not from alawar.com. I never purchased a game from alawar.com.
None of the games on alawar.com work for me. They all give me an error.
The program that told me I didn't have anything to open the .wrp file can't be right.

Something's conflicting with your computer and Alawar's wrapper. That's all I can tell you.

But then how comes I can play Alawar games from other sites and how comes I have .wrp references in the registry from Alawar games that work perfectly if they weren't downloaded from alawar.com?

The official response from Alawar is this:
What is the problem ? (Item 4: The game is not starting).
(Possible) solution(s):
A) Download and install the latest version of the game from our site, probably this bug has already been fixed in the game.
B) Make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements. You can find them in the readme.htm file in the game directory on your PC.
Also, check if other applications are running. Use your Task Manager to shut down applications and processes you don't need.
C) Make sure you have the latest version of the drivers for your video card and the most recent version of DirectX installed.
You can download DirectX free of charge HERE. To locate the drivers for your video card, visit the manufacturer's website.
==================================================================================================
If none of the above solutions have worked and you still have technical problems, do the following to launch your PC's diagnostic application, DxDiag:
1) Press the "Start" button in your Taskbar and select "Run".
2) Type "dxdiag" in a small pop-up window and click "OK". This will launch the program.
3) Press the "Save All Information" button in the program.
4) Save the report file and send it to us using the "Customer Support Form" located here: Alawar Feedback
Do not forget to attach a screenshot of the error or provide an exact error description in the message. Please describe the issue in as much detail as possible. Is the game registered? Does the demo version work?
Regards
Paul (AKA the Dragon)
P.S.: I could be mistaken but the .WRP File Extension is probably for the 3D used in the games and seems to be a Geomagic 3D Wrap File (Proprietary 3D modeling format used by Geomagic DSSP (digital shape sampling and processing) software) - Source: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/wrp
Geomagic was previously known as Raindrop Geomagic. The company website is here: http://www.geomagic.com/en/

@Paul: The .wrp is definitely the game's executable wrapped in Alawar's DRM.

Thanks GMMan for correcting me!

They never e-mailed me back.

Michelle,
You have to be VERY patient with Alawar. Even once I finally got an email address that would accept their messages (the other one would not receive - not even as in spam), it took weeks.
Alawar may have good customer service for others, but for me, it's not that great!

The ".wrp" file isn't supposed to be opened directly. There is usually an "exe" file which launches that file. If you don't have the "exe" file and you want to try it, you could copy the ".wrp" file somewhere safe and rename the original one by adding a ".exe" to the end of it. Then, if you doubleclick it, it might run, I don't know for sure. If not, rename it back or copy the original back to the folder in place of it.
I remember once a long time ago that I had the same problem you are having, but I don't remember how I resolved it now. As a last resort, you could try setting a restore point, and then reinstall it to see if that fixes it. If it doesn't or you lose the activattion status, you should be able to restore it back as it was before. However, I don't trust Microsoft's Restore utility enough to do that. I would use "Returnil", "Sandboxie" or the like instead just in case the Windows Restore might not work. Besides, using a sandbox will allow you to get the original ".exe" file if that is all you are missing.
Hope this helps.

@Just James: It won't work. Alawar isn't as stupid as Fly Games. Of course, it it's a really early version, it has the possibility.

FYI: The last 2 links hotdoge has posted are unfortunately not related to your file. The WRP that those links refer to is Windows Resource Protection, a systems file protection system added in Vista.

Having the same exact problem Michelle is describing above. I can't play purchased games or demo anything directly from Alawar.com
Anyone have any info on how to resolve? I am able to play games and demos (even of Alawar games) without any issue if they come from other sites (Gamehouse, BigFish, Playfirst, iWin, etc) - just nothing directly from Alawar.com (which stinks cause they have a lot of exclusive content I'm interested in). Their own Tech Support seems to be stumped as well.
I have one game directly bought from them in 2009 that runs perfectly. Everything I download from them that is more current gives me this problem. I think they have updated their protection software and something in it my system doesn't like. I am at my wit's end in trying to resolve it.
Thanks in advance,

I've got a lot of Alawar games and for most of them, the only problem is that stupid window they have before and after the game (I can't figure out how to avoid it). However, I got their free game the other day and the next day the wrp file began to fail. I ended up uninstalling and then downloading/re-installing it. It now works and does not have that window problem. I saw that window "Thanks for registering" before but it's gone now.
Except for the headache of having it fail and getting it up again - I ain't complaining!

You know what? A little bit of debugging can get things working. It seems to me that Alawar's wrapped games aren't really wrapped, but just has a few instructions modified. If you're handy with a debugger, chances are you can fix up the "wrapped" file by modifying a few instructions. However, there are too many variations of what they could do, and I shouldn't discuss the exact procedures to bypass DRM.

Thanks GMMan but I would have no idea what I'm doing to even attempt something like that so I'm still stuck :(
The log file in the Alawar Wrapper folder states that the game is looking for Plugins and cannot find them, and then it fails. I have posted a LONG, detailed post at Alawar with exact text from the Alawar Log file and also my Windows Event Log showing what exactly is happening. Thus far, they are completely ignoring my post!

Thanks for the info., all - I don't know what an .wrp file is - but am learning something new and valuable everyday. That's wonderful!

PM me your log (both under the game's folder and at the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AlawarWrapper\temp" or similar location), and I'll see what you're missing.
