Hello everyone sorry if this is not the right section. If it isn't please move it I'm a new poster here though I've been using the site for a few months and telling people about it. But recently I've gotten a question stuck in my head. The first was currently I'm on a Windows Vista computer and was wondering if my programs would work if I upgraded to Windows 7? If not is there a way I can keep the licenses or something? Another is the hard drive on my other computer besides this one crashed and I had some useful giveaways on there. I kept backups of the installers on a portable hard drive but I still can't reactivate them. Any ideas?
Any help is appreciated.
I have Vista and wanted to upgrade

About upgrading: First, download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Run it and it'll tell you about incompatibilities. Check those for Giveaways. If you find them, that means those programs won't work right after the upgrade. Make a image of your hard drive first, and then do an upgrade. Check if those Giveaways work. If not, try downloading the trial version from the developer's website. Chances are those might work.
About reactivation: It depends on which kind of installers you have. If it's the original Setup.exe or Activate.exe with the orange key icon, those are expired and won't work anymore. If it's the "other" kind, you're not supposed to have those.

Giveaways can only be reactivated on the day they were given away (i.e. for a 24 hour period). Attempting to reactivate them at any other times contravenes the giveaway license and is thus illegal.
On the plus side, you may find that some of the programs you installed do not require a registry key and are basically free standing and therefore transferrable. These are mainly the games as opposed to applications from the main site, but some of those are also free standing. Also, if you kept the read me's from the original downloads you can use those that gave activation codes, but you have to use the original installed program (provided you save them) – newer versions of the software wont work usually.
I’m not sure as to the efficacy of this method though. I still think it contravenes the giveaway code of practice because you are technically activating a program outside the original time slot.
BuBBy please delete my ramblings if you think I've given out too much info. Thanks.

Ah that's interesting but what do you mean by "other" installers the only one's I have are setup.exe with the orange key icon and some with the setup.exe and activate.exe with the orange key icon.

....?
Though here's something weird I can run the programs off of the computer that crashed if I don't boot off of it and then remote into it. But not being able to boot up is a real problem any more ideas?
I would've posted sooner but I was having trouble logging back in so I was finally able to change my password.Posted 14 years ago # -
To make it short, when all your attempts to reactivate the GOTDs are in vain - then there is no way to save them.
The project rules say that a Giveaway may only be installed, activated and registered in a given 24 hours window. Please read the Giveaway of the Day - free licensed software daily – About.
And please remember:Nevertheless, Bjguru, welcome to the forums, where you can find answers and games and fun and even friends - I did :)

---edited, please respect the rules---
Some giveaways work when they're not properly installed as they may not have registry dependencies. They either reestablish those registry keys or don't use them at all.Posted 14 years ago #
