   GOTD Steam Group Logo Competition: Click here to see results!!!

   So I was just thinking, we're getting more and more members but yet we still look a little unprofessional to say the least. I'd like to take one small step forward and offer to all the creative people out there a chance to increase their supply of Steam games. I'm looking for someone who is graphically enhanced to create an icon for our group. This will be a contest in which people can vote for their favorite icon. Once voting is over, the person who created the winning icon will be awarded a Steam game of your choice valued at no more than $10. You know what, I'll do you one better. I'll let you have your choice of any games with a value up to $15. That means if you have 3 games that equal $15, consider them yours. My gift to you. As an extra added bonus, rabbit has told me that he will be throwing in a copy of Shadowgrounds to the winner as well as an additional $10 worth of games. This makes the prize valued at $35 (counting the value of Shadowgrounds) now for a picture! You can use this on their awesome weekend deals or bundle packs to get the most bang for your buck.

   All entry's must be sized at under 150kb and have between 100x100 and 1280x1280 pixels. Only jpeg's and png's will be accepted. Everyone has no later than August 7th to send me your submissions. PM me on either Steam or here with your entries and I will make sure they make it to the poll. I need everyones participation on this for voting to make sure we have a good bout.

   I will be hosting the poll on http://www.vizu.com because they allow picture uploading. Once the submission period has ended, I will update everyone here with a link to the poll on August 8th. The poll will be open until August 15th to hopefully allow everyone to have a chance to vote. Please vote only once to keep it fair. Good luck and thanks in advance!

   It's open to anyone. You will need to download the Steam client (which is free) to be able to choose the games you want. Additional to the prize, you'll also be able to download Halflife 2 - Deathmatch and Half Life 2 - Lost Coast provided you have an ATI or NVidia graphics card installed on at least one of your computers or laptops.

   If you're not sure what card your computers have you can find out by going to the start menu and typing in dxdiag in the run command then ok (click on run first to bring the appropriate field up). Click on the display tab and look to the left hand pane where it says device. The top line will say something like NVidia or ATI then the model number of your graphics card.

   Yes as rabbit said, this contest is open to any and all. Please keep your submissions to just one please. I don't want to have so many choices that it's a very narrow vote. If I end up with TOO many icons, I may have to have a chat with rabbit, g@rogyle, and my fiance (all group mods) to see if we can narrow it down to our favorites to make it a much shorter poll.

   Not without manually searching for a particular group. Most groups generally use either the website/game/movie's logo. I think that is a little cheap and want something more creative and original. For an example of the old cut and paste method, here is popcap's group:

   Hi,

   I'd like to participate the contest. Problem: I have no clue about steam!
   I guess it's not required to know it for the icon design, though. So the
   icon should be related to 'Giveaway of the day', right? Any wishes for the
   design - or just a name logo? Where to upload to? Email address somewhere?

   Note: I don't want to download a steam client (unless I win) - I hope that's
   no problem.

   That's no problem at all RevX. The icon has to have something to do with GOTD, what you do with it is entirely up to you. Once you have your submission ready, come back here and click on my name and click PM this user. Either give me a link to a site you've uploaded it to, or we can make further arrangements.     Hi all.

    I don't mean to sound stupid or off-topic, but what is "Steam"? (As you can probably guess, I'm relatively new to GOTD and can only browse the forums now and again).

    I think I will make an icon... Can you include elements from other sources (for a random example the helmet from Halo on another body). Sorry for the bad example!

    Steam is an excellent game manager/store/community of gamers. Steam is powered by Valve, the developers of Left 4 Dead and the Half-Life series. As long as it has something to do with Giveaway of the Day, your submission will count.

    As I said, as long as it has something to do with Giveaway of the Day, you can include whatever your heart desires...just no copy-written images. Steam has the ability to add your own games that you may have that they sell on their program. I've added all my Half-Life games, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Lost Planet, Unreal Tournament 3, Prey, Painkiller, and MLB Front Office Manager this way. They only offer a few free games and that is only if you have an Nvidia or ATI graphics card. However, they have stellar weekend deals.

    I'll stick the topic to the front page as i think it warrants more exposure.

    for those who're not sure about Steam, or installing it. I felt the same way when I was sort of forced to install it to play a game I'd bought via fileplanet. in fact there were two games, called Defense Grid: The Awakening and Galaxy Bowling. I hadn't a clue about Steam up till the moment I installed the first of those 2 games. I was rather annoyed at first and even wrote to Valve because I thought it an affront to have had to install the Steam client just so that i could play the games.

    Anyway, to cut a short story even shorter; within a few weeks I bought Half Lifes 2's Orange Box and found that it also used the steam client. It was at this point that I discovered the Steam shop, which is accessible via one of the tabs in the Steam browser. They had a weekend deal which I thought was an amazing bargain; all five games are some of the better indie games that have been released over the last few years. It comprised of five arcade games called Gravitron 2, Eet's, I-Fluid, Multiwinia and Tials 2: Second edition. The total cost of that package at the moment (if you were to buy them seperately is $40, though I got it via Steam for only $10. Every week they have at least one and often several recently released and some classics on offer for as much as 75% off the retail price.

    I bought Men of War last weekend for just over $10. The usual price is nearly $40. The previous week I bought all three of the Brothers in Arms trilogy (A brilliant squad based game that requires tactics to be able to progress through the levels)for less than $20. I paid around $145 for all three titles over the last three years (I bought duplicates so that my son could play with me online). Need I say more.

    I've come to really like Steam over the months, not only because of the amazing bargains (I've bought nearly 130 games at a massive saving via Steam since I downloaded the client back in January of this year), but also because all my games are automatically updated when patches and minor updates are released, plus it gives access to my friends {much like a gamespy or comrade client does}, while I'm online. I talk to Wizzard and G@rgoyle regularily via the IM that's incorporated into the steam client.
