We have a topic on the Starburn giveaway that someone else turned toward the subject of the toolbar. I posted a response and got an intelligent response from the Wizzard of Oz that I didn't agree with. I tried to post another response but a moderator had closed it, without explanation. That in itself isn't that important. But, bluntly, I'm starting to notice an attitude of frustration with debate from a moderator or two (I really haven't narrowed it down). I agree it can get out of hand, and I can be as guilty as anyone. This seems to stem from an understandable desire to not have the forum cluttered up with questions that are against the rules. That seems to me a good trend. But, I believe getting over sensitive about debate is a bad trend. If moderating is frustrating you that much, take a break and let someone else do it for awhile.
I'm really not trying to elicit a justification or response from that moderator. I'd have no way of knowing who it is and really don't care. If you feel you must justify closing that topic, then I'm sure you will. It doesn't matter to me. My complaint isn't about that, it's general.
I realize the moderators will never get enough credit for what they do and I sympathize. But, at least post a notice saying, "I'll only tolerate debate here until it gets under my skin, then you'll be cut off." It's good to try and help the forums keep a consistent direction, but we all - me, especially - have to be careful about trying too hard to impose are own personal vision on the forums.
On the other hand, I wonder how many people will actually see THIS post?
