this is the second time today this has happened, strange problem. I can't keep up with closing each page, by the time I get to task manager to close them there there are about 25 pages of my IE homepage opened, and they just keep opening. I finally clicked restart in task manager and that did solve it....or did it? This happened this morning too. I just did a clean install yesterday, (as some people know) I did a chkdsk too this afternoon just to verify everything was ok. Problem with that is when it's done it doesn't tell you anything, just reboot to the desktop. Anyway, what is the replicating all about, can someone tell me if there is a problem, setting, poltergiest?.....
I open I E...and it opens and opens and opens....it doesn't stop

Just to clarify.. your machine was shut down and rebooted today? If not, that would be my suggestion but it's just a guess.

This happened to me a couple of months ago, it was a nasty virus. Every time I tried going into internet explorer, it would keep opening blank pages non-stop. Also, when I went into My Computer, strange popups would come up and say I had a virus and should install some software. I did many operating system reinstalls, but still to no luck. I finally ran a Full Scan using Windows Defender and it took 4 hours to scan my whole computer. When it was done, it found trojans inside of my System Restore Folders. I deleted them, rebooted, and all was well again. I seriously hope this isn't what you have. Best of luck to you :/

Run Avira, Spybot, AVG antispyware, Firefox.

I am not really an expert, but those seem to be symptoms of a residing virus.. You said you did a clean install ydy, did the problems start after that only?
Which antivirus, antispyware setup are you using? And as sm1 pointed out, do you have system restore on? Because malware may be present there.Posted 14 years ago # -

I did get the popups after I reinstalled the OS....it was a clean install from the OS cd, as I have before. There's a way you have to do this with the CD, gives instructions as you go along. You finally get to where you select a partition, either delete a partition and install 'raw' or create a new one ( can't remember exactly how that goes)....I always delete and start 'raw'...I'm never sure if this is right but I guess it must be if I'm here now. I have anvir premium subscription and Superantispyware lifetime subscription. I have spywareblaster running in the background and use CCleaner just about everyday. As well as Advanced System Pro, run this a few times a week. So, I don't know, if it were a virus wouldn't one of these catch it? I guess nothings foolproof. Today though it didn't happen at all. So maybe this morning it got 'axed' with my normal scheduled virus and spyware runs. I did do a chkdsk too yesterday, I believe this was after the popup misery. Anyways, thanks for the responses, hopefully it's gone for good.
And hotdoge....thanks for the Trend Micro link..going to save it for future problems.Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi. I am making a few assumptions while responding, so do correct me if i am wrong..
You did a clean install but only of the OS partition, that means you still retain your other partitions. The virus need not reside on the C: drive only. Regarding the software you mentioned:
-Anvir premium: May seem like a naive question, but i hope you reinstalled it after the clean OS install, and that you did not open/click any other existing data before installing it.
IMHO, its vital to reach for and install the antivirus program (whatever you have) before doing any other thing, after an OS reinstall.
- SuperAntispyware: Its a good prog, but you did not mention if u have the Pro version, as the free one lacks a real-time scanner.
- SpywareBlaster: You cant have it 'running in the background'.. If you check, it never runs in the background, simply because its not a real-time scanner or even an 'on-demand' scanner. It works in a different way from the traditional sense of a scanner program.
-CCleaner: Its a registry and junk cleaner.. Wont clean out malware if you have any.Out of free anti-virus software, i personally recommend Avast 4.8 , but its a subjective choice.
I too hope your prob is gone for good. Best of luck!

Hi, from what I'm reading it looks like a virus hosted in your hdd.
I recomend you to reinstall your OS, get the drivers, and don't try to install/read anything in other partitions/external disks whatsoever.try to download Avira antivir (it's free)and spybot and update both programs, in spybot enable the teatimer it will let you know if something it's triyng to rewrote your windows registry.
Made a clean check/sweep, that should solve the problem most of the time, if you can use firefox or opera, internet explorer has a lot of backdoors to trojans and the like.
perhaps you should consider try another copy of your OS or try other operating system.
Good Luck.
