The only experience I've had *maybe* worth mentioning was with a Win10 Home guest. I'd already updated my Windows VMs, cleaned them up and compacted the VHDs so I'd be set for another month, so I was annoyed that I'd have to do a bunch of work over again. So I jumped right in, updating the guest additions or extensions as soon as the VM started, and wound up with Windows Update in a loop, continually downloading a new definition for Defender. Couldn't easily stop that behavior, shutting down & restarting the VM etc., so I restored the newest copy of the VHD and this time went to Windows Update first. I confirmed today that everything still works fine [I *suspect* that it was trying to update when the guest addition install took place].
