As billionaires and big corporations race to build more AI data centers, they're gobbling up the parts used to make cell phones and PCs/laptops. RAM was the 1st casualty, then SSDs, and even conventional hard drives are selling out. Scarcity means [sometimes MUCH] higher prices. This can effect you even if you're not buying anything, should one of your devices break. You can now read horror stories online about companies refusing to honor their warranty, because prices are so much higher than when you originally purchased whatever. Last week I got lucky... an NVMe SSD died, & Sandisk replaced it [YEAH!], and the replacement was a better drive than the original, I assume because that was all they could get their hands on. If I had waited a month or two I might have had a long wait for the replacement, or maybe not gotten that replacement at all. To show how much prices have risen, in February, 2025, a 1TB WD Blue NVMe drive cost me $58 from Amazon. Today the price is $231, allegedly On Sale -- the price tracker says its peak price was $285 in early February, 2026!
