   Patch Tuesday isn't until next week. Yesterday, my start menu was the same as it has been since I configured it following the upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11 last year. Today it was different!

   First, it only showed the first 2 rows of icons I had set and had "groups" of 4 (with pre-defined names) and the 4th (lower right) of each group opened to a larger selection of that group's genre. I didn't create them! My "Sherlock 7" icon was in "other" rather than "Entertainment". BTW - Sherlock 7 is a beta game by Kaser Software.

   I finally saw that it was set on "less" in the upper right corner. I clicked there and it switched to "more" and showed my previous start menu including the 2 icons that didn't fit before (it's one row longer) and then those groups I saw under "less".

   It suddenly appeared this morning AFTER I had to do a reboot to get CCleaner 7 to open properly. I changed nothing! What happened? Can I get the older form back? That's not critical because other than the 2 extra icons, it looks like it did before.

   Hubby playing with the options, got the bottom area with the groups to go to the normal "All" list and from there do a "grid" that puts each letter of the alphabet's icons in rows. That part is easier to read than the long list that was originally there.

   We also noted a "Recommended" portion between the main "pinned" stuff and the "All" list. That is really a "Recent" list of the activity of some apps, such as Excel.

   With a little work, we removed the two icons below our 4 rows (previously a 2nd "page") to other lists.

   It now looks much like we had before but we were not happy that it changed - apparently totally out of sequence. It works but why was it changed and why was it changed WHEN it changed?

   That is the new Start Menu that was released in January I believe -- Microsoft was slowly rolling it out, and seems to have stepped on the gas recently, as I've seen it start to appear on more copies of Windows. It was one of those features included in an update, but not turned on until Microsoft decided to flip the switch. The 2 big complaints I've read is that one, it's too big on some screens, and two, if you have it create its own categories, those often don't make sense, and there's no way to edit it AFAIK. The bug (?) I've noticed is that if you uninstall an app or install a new one it can take a restart before it shows up in the Start Menu.

   It did cause some garbage in the start menu to show up that I hadn't noticed. I don't like putting things where installs default and I don't like the default places for shortcuts any better. I'm pretty good at keeping them off the desktop but some accumulated lower in the start menu (not pinned). This showed up about a dozen of them and it did take a reboot to get some of them to stop showing up on the start menu (under "All"). Now it's fine.

   I haven't seen this mess on my laptop but it's new, not an upgrade from 10, and far far far less cluttered with software. Its start menu was only 2 rows to begin with!
