This is a pretty capable image editor with layers etc. that IMHO is easier the the GIMP, but note that if you're new to using layers or tools like curves there will be a learning curve, but that would apply to any comparable apps as well. It does have the option of using AI online. The details are spelled out in the manual on the app's web site... you set up an account with Stable Diffusion and get an api number -- enter that in AlterPhoto, select the AI-based tool or filter, and the app will use Stable Diffusion as if it's built-in, though your data will necessarily be uploaded to their servers to do the actual work. Note that like most other online AI companies, Stable Diffusion is not free -- you get 25 credits initially -- the platform.stability[.]ai/ site where you get the api key has pricing info. There is a portable version of AlterPhoto available but it's not 100% portable -- quite a few files get added to your Documents folder.
One further note that applies to most all AI image editing: AI, at least the online versions, does not like nor handle larger images or large image files. Even Photoshop. What happens is generally either the images you get out of the AI are rather small, or the resolution, sharpness, &/or clarity decrease, as the AI downsamples your image before doing its thing. That's Not to say don't use AI, but something to watch for. One technique is to work on smaller sections of the image one at a time.
