   I had one problem in Win11 Home that I wanted to warn about... after the restart to apply the update a window opened wanting to tell me about all the new super duper Windows features. Annoyed, I just clicked the X to close the window, instead of looking for a cancel button or clicking Next. That was a mistake. The process or processes kept running, and nothing else on the laptop worked, e.g., checking for updates in the Store just showed the maddening dot circle forever. Attempting a restart had no effect -- clicking the power button to shut down after the 3-finger salute [Ctrl, Alt, + Delete] got me a black screen, and the same dots circling forever. It took a hard power off -- holding the power button for several seconds -- to actually power down so I could restart, & afterward everything was normal.

   ... includes security updates for 107 flaws, including one publicly disclosed zero-day vulnerability in Windows Kerberos.

   This Patch Tuesday also fixes thirteen "Critical" vulnerabilities, nine of which are remote code execution vulnerabilities, three are information disclosure, and one is elevation of privileges.

   The number of bugs in each vulnerability category is listed below:

   KB5063878, the Win11 24H2 patch **may** be causing hard disk/SSD failures with loss of data. Using Google with search terms KB5063878 ssd you'll see a Bunch of similar articles. The original source is @Necoru_cat on X/Twitter, allegedly a Japanese PC builder. Articles mention scattered user reports confirming the problem.

   Phison, a company that makes controller chips for SSDs, including drives reported to suffer from this latest problem, has released a statement:

   August 19, 5:30 am ET: Phison has issued the following statement to Tom's Hardware: "Phison has recently been made aware of the industry-wide effects of the 'KB5063878' and ‘KB5062660’ updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. We understand the disruption this may have caused and promptly engaged industry stakeholders. We are steadfast in our commitment to product integrity and the success of our partners and end users. At this time, the controllers that may have been affected are under review and we are working with partners. We will continue to provide updates and advisories to partners who may have been impacted to provide support and ensure any applicable remediation."

   Meanwhile Microsoft reports another problem... the August update breaks reset & recovery in Win10 & older versions of Win11. They've released fixes.

   The updates have been released as follows:

   The company notes that no previous updates are necessary for the fix to function properly since the update, much like others, is also cumulative in nature.

   The saga with possible hard disk/SSD issues continues, as Phison says an unknown 3rd party has been circulating a fake doc listing the Phison controller chips effected by this Windows problem.

   Microsoft is aware of the reports of drive problems, but has not be able to duplicate it, so they're asking for more info from anyone effected.

   In a service alert seen by BleepingComputer, the company added that it couldn't reproduce the issue on up-to-date Windows 11 24H2 systems and is now attempting to collect user reports with additional information from those affected.

   "We are actively working with our storage device partners to try to reproduce the issue. At the time of this publication, neither internal testing nor telemetry have identified an increase in disk failure or file corruption," the company said.

   "In addition, Microsoft customer support teams haven't received reports of customers experiencing this issue. If you are experiencing this issue, please contact Support for Business or use the Feedback Hub to file a report.

   The company is also investigating if this issue is Microsoft's fault and has promised to provide an update when more details are available.

   Phison, one company that makes SSD controller chips, and was singled out as *maybe* the one thing SSDs having problems had in common, says it also could not duplicate the any problems.

   As stated on August 18, Phison was made aware of the 'KB5063878' and ‘KB5062660’ updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. In response, Phison dedicated over 4,500 cumulative testing hours to the drives reported as potentially impacted and conducted more than 2,200 test cycles. We were unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time.

   Phison remains committed to the highest standards of reliability and continues to closely monitor the situation in collaboration with our industry partners.

   Best Practices for End Users
   While our validation testing has not identified any concerns related to these Windows 11 updates, we have shared industry best practices to support high-performance storage devices. We continue to advise users that for extended workloads, such as transferring large files or decompressing large archives, make sure a proper heatsink or thermal pad is used with the storage device. This helps maintain optimal operating temperatures, reduces the likelihood of thermal throttling, and ensures sustained performance.

   ... after installing the August 2025 Windows security update and later updates, UAC prompts for administrator rights can appear for standard users in the following scenarios:

   Running MSI repair commands (such as msiexec /fu).
   Launching Autodesk applications, including some versions of AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Inventor CAM, or when installing an MSI file after a user signs into the app for the first time.
   Installing applications that configure themselves per user.
   Running Windows Installer during Active Setup.
   Deploying packages via Manager Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) that rely on user-specific "advertising" configurations.
   Enabling Secure Desktop.

   If a standard user runs an app that initiates an MSI repair operation without displaying UI, it will fail with an error message. For example, installing and running Office Professional Plus 2010 as a standard user will fail with Error 1730 during the configuration process.

   Workaround: When possible, run the app as an administrator. (From the Start menu or Search results, right-click the app and select Run as administrator.)

   A Chinese Facebook group claims that they found the answer to why certain SSDs failed after installing the August updates. According to the PCDIY! group, the SSDs that failed were using pre-release firmware rather than the final, production versions.
