This article from Ed Bott has info that may be useful for maximizing battery life, but he also threw in a command I didn't know existed [or maybe I did and forgot?]. Anyway, type shutdown /? & press Enter using the Command Prompt for a list of switches, including the option to boot into the BIOS settings menu.
*Usually* you press Delete or F2 repeatedly after turning the device on from a powered off state to get into the BIOS settings, but I emphasize Usually because that doesn't always work. And while most people have no need to set anything in the BIOS, that can sometimes be the only way to boot to a USB stick to for example restore a backup.
