Could be wrong, but I remember HitFilm as taking a rather different approach to their GUI & editing -- I thought it might be easier for someone new to video editing to manage. Today's offering doesn't really seem to me to offer anything out of the ordinary, while it lacks several features you'd want for more serious work. If you like it, & it does what you want/need, there's nothing wrong with using it -- just be aware that you can do better.
That said, FXhome took the the unusual step of requiring OpenCL support -- AFAIK with every other video editing app it's optional. The story goes... Long ago Nvidia came out with CUDA, which was a way for developers to tap the special capabilities of a GPU for stuff other than the usual gaming. AMD had stream, which they actively developed because of their TV cards. Intel later came out with Quick Sync, more to make up for some of their lower end CPUs than to add something new [using it for video-related acceleration was unofficial at first -- one of their employees documented it as a personal project]. When AMD stopped making TV cards, they stopped supporting stream, and went with the OpenCL standard instead [some of the video converters on GOTD offer AMD acceleration based on an old SDK]. Since it's also used for non-video stuff, Intel offers some OCL support. But after starting off strong, matching AMD's OCL capabilities, Nvidia largely backed away from it, concentrating just on CUDA. Because not having OCL came as a surprise to some folks, I thought it might be helpful to list some of the things to look for to make sure HitFilm Express is gone after uninstalling it.
There are 2 folders in Program Files, one for Boris FX & one for FXhome. Program Files\ Common Files gets an OFX folder, while ProgramData gets a folder for BorisFX & again one for FXHome. Windows\ Installer gets the file 95ee.msi, which is 412MB. And in the Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Local\ folder you'll find either a Hitfilm Express Activation folder, or if you got it to run, that folder plus two more, FXHome & FXHome Helper. In the registry you mainly want to get rid of the HKCU\ Software\ FXHOME key, the HKLM\ Software\ BorisFX key, & the HKLM\Software\ FXHome key. [There are more new registry entries, but it's difficult if possible to get rid of everything related to an .msi installer, and there's little impact from keys associating the HitFilm filename extensions with their app.]
There's a new version of the free DaVinci Resolve out today BTW.
