After running out grocery shopping this afternoon, finally got around to playing with HippoEDIT, today's GOTD, late this evening. Installed it in a win10 Home 64-bit VM, selecting the portable version during installation. [Quick note, I had to add an exception in Defender to allow a blocked file & run the GOTD setup file a 2nd time, but then it worked fine.] It adds quite a few registry entries BTW. Tried running the already installed app as a portable app in a win7 Home Prem. 64-bit VM, and HippoEDIT seemed to run fine. [Note: there are 2 registry entries needed or else it will run as a trial.] Problem surfaces when I went to restart that win7 VM -- Windows was broken -- would not start. Figured it was something I did earlier, so restored the VM [copied a backup of the VHD into place], made sure it was running fine, and fired up that same copy of HippoEDIT again, running it portably. It ran fine, but win7 was again broken after a restart. Fired up the win10 VM where HippoEdit was installed, and everything's fine.
Urgent - Don't Run GOTD HippoEDIT as Portable
