   Microsoft tried to fix another bug, and created this one.

   Running a Quick or Full scan will fail after a few seconds and only go through a handful of files, resulting in incomplete, superficial results. Such scans are usually known to take tens of minutes, and even hours.

   In an email to ZDNet, Microsoft confirmed the bug and said the company was working on a fix. The company said that only manual or scheduled scans were impacted, and that Windows Defender's real-time scanning protection was not impacted, and should detect malware once it reaches a system.

   Instead of relying on a Quick or Full scan, users can use the Windows Defender "Custom scan" feature and select the drives or folders they'd like scanned, manually, one by one.

   Thank you for that. I had wondered why the green line zoomed pass to three quarter mark. Doing a Custom scan now.

   The problem was in a definition update and it has been fixed from what I can tell. I reported it to the Microsoft Community and got a response that a "partial" fix was in a new definition update. Without running a new full scan (I stopped after I watched it a bit), the problem seems to be fixed for me.

   Enough people were affected that it was fixed quickly, apparently.

   It was also no doubt Highly Embarrassing, considering how many problems have surfaced after their updates.

   When it comes to these problem updates, & for those who won't, don't want to move to win10, Paul Thurrott has an interesting bit to say:

   ... And that’s the real problem here, the gerbil wheel of never-ending updates that explains why so many Windows 7 users don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10. After all, jumping out of a perfectly working airplane is an unnatural act. What’s even more unnatural, of course, is continually updating an airplane while it’s flying. Actually, jumping out of that plane might make sense.

   Didn't work for me. My laptop was not affected but my desktop is. Guess I will wait for the next Update Tuesday then.

   Assuming Microsoft has figured out a fix, **Should** be available next week as part of an optional update if you don't want to wait -- you'll have to check for Windows updates manually though. Neowin[.]net normally posts an article when the 2nd round of fixes is released, along with change logs, if you don't want to check for updates every day.

   Every month Microsoft releases patches for all supported Windows versions on the 2nd Tuesday, but later in the month -- sometimes the next week, other times just before month's end -- they release additional updates with more fixes, though they might be staggered, with win7 updates one day, older win10 versions another day, and the latest win10 version updates last of all on another day. If you don't bother checking for updates, and so don't install the 2nd round of fixes, they're added to what's installed the next patch Tuesday.

   The 2nd cumulative update for September is available now for win10 versions *prior* to 1903, and it includes some Defender related fixes. The update preview as it's called in win7 is also available, but with a more limited set of security related patches. Of course not everything that's included is announced in Microsoft's lists of fixes, and even if it is included, as we've seen, the fix doesn't always work for everyone. Hopefully this 2nd update will fix your desktop Tiffany.

   I don't have the latest updates but will check again tomorrow. I did notice the Windows Defender seems to be running a little better this time. There was a loooonng Windows Defender update via the app yesterday. Maybe that was it. ???

   Don't know if this will help or not...

   The 2nd Sept. cumulative update hit for win10 1903 [Spring 2019 version], & it doesn't list anything Defender related like I see on the lists for earlier win10 versions.

   However, on 2 of the 3 copies of win10 using just Defender [no Bitdefender or McAfee] there was an added Defender update that only appeared when I manually checked for updates *after* the cumulative update was installed. The 3rd copy that didn't have the Defender update was in a VM, and it's possible the update did not install correctly -- it's the only copy of win10 where Disk Cleanup didn't work after I installed the update. [BTW, & FWIW, it grew about 7GB -- 2 GB after compacting the dynamically expanding VHD.]

   I also updated another VM to the latest Fast Ring Insider build of 20H1, the build that's going to be released next spring. Then I ran a quick scan with Defender to compare the scan times with the now updated v. 1903, and they were close to the same. My thoughts were that since the code is likely different from 1903, a broken 1903 would take noticeably less time to perform a quick scan.
