The nuts & bolts of this audio editing app are...
The downloaded setup.exe file is not encased in the GOTD wrapper, & so might be the same as the trial download, or not. It installs & uses 11 older Active X files from NCT, which using Google, seems like it might be abandonware. The files check out at Virus Total. It's the nature of media handling in Windows that one or more of those 11 files might break something related to media handling, whether it's an app(s) or a function(s) in that app etc. It's also the nature of Active X that it means lots of registry entries -- monitoring the installation of AV Audio Editor in my XP Mode VM, 7028 new entries were recorded. That [& the following] is just info -- Not saying anything is good or bad, but just what is.
The software installs to a folder called AV Audio Editor, with 13 files at 17.8MB -- it also added 2 folders in the XP equivalent of Users\ [UserName]\AppData\ Roaming\ : AV Audio Editor & New Version Available. The individual files check out at Virus Total, including something called Goup.exe. Scans with the free version of AVG & McAfee LiveSafe don't find any problems. Googling on goup.exe I found this -
reasoncoresecurity[.]com/goup.exe-86f5f93d4d2b49a513ba75b1bf22840f13f11f13.aspx
Per that web page goup is tied to add-ons like toolbars & browser extensions. I did not record any new registry entries [other than one cache entry] with the words goup or goup.exe. Once goup.exe is deleted, AV Audio Editor *seems* to run just fine. Before deleting goup.exe I ran Sysinternals Process Explorer, then started AV Audio Editor -- it did not show goup.exe running, nor did it show Any network communications, including in the properties dialog for AVAudioEditor.exe. Process Explorer did show AV Audio Editor using Internet Explorer.
Notes: some malware detects if it's being run in a VM & will then not trigger or run -- while goup may be more something that's unwanted rather than actual malware, it might do the same thing in a VM. I had not had any reason to try Internet Explorer in my XP Mode VM prior to monitoring the AV Audio Editor installation, so I can't say whether it worked or not, but it does not work afterward. Internet Explorer not working could be responsible for my not recording any activity related to goup.
That said, to maybe put a bit of a damper on what some may feel a unjustified level of paranoia, criminals by definition are too impatient &/or lazy to get stuff the hard way, by working & saving for it. So why should a criminal or criminals go to the work of creating software & a web site to sell it etc., when they can get more results for less work using email?
