I've been trying to download since just after midnight. (12 1/2 hours) and it either says the zip file is corrupted or that they can't find wikisend.

The comments are usualy so helpful that I almost instaled DAP (download accelorastor) without even checking it out on my own first as so many people here suggested using it for todays download. But last minute I go to my usual freeware/shareware sites to check out the comments there. I find that 9 out of 10 people find DAP is loaded with addware and most say bad program. I wont use DAP..better safe than sorry.

whitemist i would suggest rebooting your system and if you had it to download to a specific place delete it and start over that is what i did and the site is back up. Only getting about 45kb/s but at least it is downloading:) lol

I don't want to demoralize you, but after a very fast download the activation took 53 min. - So be PATIENT !
I have no clue if this really helps, but try the other language pages
Posted 16 years ago # -
Graylox, I was sitting waiting and waiting for the activation and wondered why it wasn't working.
Thanks, I will try again !Posted 16 years ago # -
its taking me a long time to download...

Finally...success, third time's a charm!!! now I will get to explore and find out about the game.

12:12am I finally got the game and it's up and running. What a long day and a long wait. Thanks GGOTD it looks good so far.

Won´t install on my system.
Visual C++ runtime error pops up. :-(I updated everything on my PC. Runtimes, DirectX, NET framework, Windows Updates. Downloaded twice. Rebooted about twenty times. Still not working.
What DLLs do i need? Which language versions do i need?
Why don´t you update your stupid installer if it makes problems again and again. The forums are full of Visual C++ runtime errors.
Software Key Wrapper v 0.9 from 2006.
Come on. It´s 2008 now. What about an update? Get rid of Visual C++?Posted 16 years ago # -
I don't understand why you are so upset Fred. It is just a game and you didn't pay a cent for it so you are out nothing at all. I downloaded it 3 times before I got a good copy. When it downloaded properly it worked right.
I personally believe that there is something going on on the internet the last couple of days that we have not been told about because my antivirus is updating itself every 6-8 hours. Normally I get a few second update that doesn't require rebooting but I have needed to reboot twice in less than 24 hours.

bluhoteyes, I have restarted my computer and retried over and over. I only have 2 hours left and this has been an all day project and I can't even get the zip folder open.
Posted 16 years ago # -
whitemist did you clean up your TEMP-folder and the cache ? sometimes that helps. good luck!
Posted 16 years ago # -
so sorry whitemist that is what i done and it did the trick i sure hope you get it as it is a fun game :)

Bethany, I respectfully have to disagree with you. Fred has a right to be upset. If you are happy downloading a 500mb file 3 times in order to get a good copy, that does not mean that Fred or anyone else has to be happy with it. One download is all it should take. What good is a downloadable game if it won't download or install correctly?
It doesn't matter whether it was a free game or not. Too many people say, "Don't complain.....it's free". So if I am a starving homeless man, and someone gives me a mold-covered loaf of bread, I should not complain because it is free? Free or not, the download should work. And it isn't just a few people with a few lousy PC's. Run down the comments page and see how many people are having problems with this download. Then multiply that number by hundreds, if not more. That is how many people will hesitate to try the next big download. Some may give up on this web site altogether.
This website is not here to "give" us games. It does that, but that is not its main purpose. This website is a money-making business. You may not see HOW they are making money, but you can bet the house they are. And if download situations like today's continue to occur on a regular basis, the visits to this site will more than likely dwindle, and so will the money they make. THAT, my friend, is why it matters if people complain about a free game not downloading.
I had the same Software Key Wrapper problem as Fred. I just deleted everything after that. No game is worth the hassle. If GOTD wants to keep people returning, it might want to make sure that 3 downloads in order to get a good copy is not the norm.
By the way, Bethany, I congratulate you on your success. Many people NEVER got a good copy or a good installation. Some people are suggesting that GOTD carry this game over into tomorrow. I doubt it would do much good. That idea reminds me of a sign I saw at a hair stylist's once. It said: "If you don't like your haircut, we'll give you another one free!" Why on earth would I want ANOTHER bad haircut? -Dan

6 hours to download, 45 minutes to "activate", and 20 minutes to install, but I finished at about 11:30 pm.
Hope it works, b/c I am not going to try it tonight.

There must have been something wrong somewhere.
My dwld never went over 135kb/s, but mostly was at ~120.
I have one of those super-duper connections, always lightning fast.
I never speak of my dwld speed, it's not nice to brag.
I'm just mentioning it now, to add my voice to those who had trouble. So it was not just ppl w slow connections or on dial-up!!
Heck, it's still dwloading!! So *NO* activation for me!!!And, they must have cut the comments, bc I find it rather strange *nobody* commented after 20h45!?!
It stopped at #151 ...=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=
Edit:
It's now 3h20 - They just added 31 more comments 5mn ago!! Very funny!!Posted 16 years ago # -
Maybe they did comment - but the moderators head had exploded from extreme stress....

hey bubby- that's why they pay you the big bucks!

Well, i´m pissed because this isn´t the first time. It´s about the tenth time this happens. It´s only on games. So the game giveaway setup must be improper programmed. I told them every time and they never cared about it. Still the same old piece of crappy software.

Amen creamypretzel ! I got the darn thing downloaded but ran into the "key wrapper" problem. When I finally got that dealt with it was just past the 24 hour time period so I got nothing for my time wasted trying to deal with GOTD's dysfunctional system. If they are going to offer these things ... they should at least make sure that everything is functioning properly ! This is the last time I spend hours downloading and trying to activate junk software like this !
Posted 16 years ago # -
I started downloading with about 4 hours remaining on the giveaway.
With just under 45 minutes remaining, the download completed - I extracted the setup, and deleted the downloaded zip file (because of the size).
The Setup/Activation ran without any problems whatsoever. The setup took about 3 minutes to complete. The game worked just fine.

Hmmm,
What bothers me is that the game downloads ok for some people but a largish number of us can't get it to download it, it activate it. That way they can say that it is your computer's fault. Even people who had gone through it all and has the game installed complain about the time it took.
I am not saying that the problem is not from our computers. It may affect people who have gotten some software, or that his drivers are out of date or other gazillion things that make computers OS's behave differently.
Then again it could be the developer's fault. Also GGOTD seems to check the file that had taken two hours to download when the first window open and before the first installation window opens. I say this because smaller downloads have never taken so long to go from the first GGOTD's to the first installation window.
Maybe it took so long to open the first installation window because the GGOTD servers were overwhelmed with all the download and registration requests. Maybe requests are put in a first come first serve policy, but taking so long to start installing any software should not happen.
The size of the file is definitely an issue because the download servers can't seem to be able to deal with all the simultaneous download and activate requests. In my experience no previous giveaway have ever had this problem.
My first 8 attempts to download from either one of the 2 download options opened a page with the same message that IE spits out when you are not connected to the Internet and try to open a web page. Who knows how many downloads GAOTD have every day, or for that matter the size, speed and the maximum number of parallel uploads of their server(s).
So it seems that half a gig is more than their servers can handle in order to have the normal number of visitors download the GGOTD without having to wait for hours, even if they have high speed connections and/or download managers.
I guess this is all a moot point now.

No repeat today? Maybe this weekend? There were too many of us that couldn't get through. No matter how many times we 'cleaned up', rebooted, added programs.... I think there are many of us that tried all we could. This is the first time I have been completely shut out from downloading. And since there are so many that were, it seems that the developer would want to extend his graciousness in us wanting to try their game. After all, games like these, in sequences, are highly likely to bring in more $$$ as we want to play the others, too.

Here's wishing (among many I am sure), that this game will be offered again soon (very)...like so many others here, I tried different browsers and download manager combinations...after 6 tries finally got a valid zip, but by that time the activation period had expired :<< Hopefully, we will all get another opportunity, looks like a good game.

I tried for 5 hours on Sunday to download this game. I was unsuccessful for the entire 5 hours. And this is not the first time this has happened with the games since they went just weekends and went with the new wikisend stuff. It is NOT my computer. I rebooted and everything and still no luck. I hope this problem gets resolved SOON and I would also wish that they'd go back to a daily game like they promised once. I would like this game to be reposted without the glitches and give us another chance to get it. IS THERE A WAY TO CONTACT THE GAOTD TEAM DIRECTLY AND GET A RESPONSE? I feel like I'm typing into cyberspace and that they will never read these.
WHAT'S UP GAOTD with the games?

I'd be interested to find out how much free disk space is available on the c: drive of users who had problems running the setup. The way the setup works - you could need at least 4 times the size of the download - so this works out to a requirement of at least 2GB of free space on the C: drive. The activation might only take 5 seconds - but to extract and prepare the setup program from the GGOTD giveaway of 500MB this time could be quite a bit more.
The number downloads/activations were well over 40,000 so statistically there will always be a few users who had problems installing the software on their computer. It's not much of a consolation to be told you are one of the few who had problems, and I am not aware of any fixes (certainly not at this late stage).
As far as leaving a message to the GOTD team - they do read the forums, and while you might not get a personal response they will see it. There is also a "Contact Us" on the bottom of the sites main page which you can use to get a message to them.
I am also in regular email contact with the team, and may pass on any legitimate concerns.
I think the weekends giveaways were very successful considering the high number of users successfully installing the software. I think this was probably the largest giveaway ever run.

I never did get it downloaded. Did everything you all suggested and yet still said the zip file was corrupted. Worked on it until midnight--34 hours. Oh, well.
Posted 16 years ago # -
I had to wait until late afternoon to get connected to wikisend but I finally got the game downloaded and installed. The whole process took about 45 minutes (download, install and set-up). I had to istall the download manager to increase my download speed from 45kb to 345kb per second (never had to do that before because I am on DSL).
My guess is that with the large file size and 40,000 people trying to download the game put a large strain on the server. But, I also wonder how many user's computers didn't meet the minimum requirements of the game. If you download it and it doesn't work, it may not be the software's fault.
It's a shame that some members were unable to get the game to work. Mine works fine and I am not that fond of it. The game is fine, I just don't have the kind of patients it takes to wander around and around in a game like this.
Anyway, I hope that next time they offer a large game it will go better.
