My review of WWII Tank Commander:
At over 300 MB in size, it's a huge download. This shouldn't be surprising, as the download includes one 32-bit version and two 64-bit versions. It's nice to see that from a developer, but, in my opinion, it's overkill. Why not have seperate downloads for each version?
The game itself, however, isn't quite as good as the download size would suggest. At first, it seems like a vehicular mission from a high-budget title, with well-done driving controls and good level designs. The mission objectives are also easily recognized. However, the tank itself wiggles too much to aim very well, and the player is quite outmatched by enemy foot soldiers and their machine-guns. It feels like a missed opportunity.
The graphics, however, are extremely polished - they look like those from the first Call of Duty game, which is good. The HUD isn't quite as good as it could have been, but it works well enough and leaves a wide view of the impressive environments. The tanks are well-rendered, too.
The sounds are appropriate for the setting, but they aren't very diverse and the menu music isn't much. Still, they are appropriate for the theme, and the "battlefield" effect of sounds coming from several directions adds a new dimension of atmosphere.
Not that the theme itself is anything special. After Call of Duty came out, there has been a non-stop stream of WWII-themed war games. While I can see how it lends itself easily to game design, with its varied combat theaters and wide vehicle and army variety, it's gotten old.
Overall, I give WWII Tank Commander a score of seven out of ten(seven for gameplay, nine for graphics, seven for sound, and five for theme). While quite polished, it isn't as compelling as other games in its genre.
