   seems like a great deal, as this cloud storage employs user's own home/private network as the server, which seems more secure to me, compared with skydrive or any 3rd-party cloud-based storage server.

   remember that servers such as this [all LAN-to-WAN servers..] open a port listening to the web, and you take all the risk of, say, a HDD eating itself while you were out. or not.

   I don't trust the cloud. then again, I don't trust [on a more tenuous level, if y'all can get past the pun] local hardware, either.

   I agree FWIW...

   First, if it's connected to the Internet it's susceptible to attack. Second, re: local hardware, one or a few people may have the expertise [or not], but they don't have the numbers or resources to try & stay ahead of any new threats. And 3rd, it's always best to limit your exposure -- if you leave the door unlocked for the kids, you leave it unlocked for the passing theif as well -- if you have your home or small office network exposed to the Internet, someone that breaks in has access to much more than whatever you wanted to make accessable.

   As far as connecting to the Internet goes, you can keep your stuff, or at least the most important files/data disconnected from the Internet, & that helps -- you can use a NAS device [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage ] or [older?] PC or for example our router has a USB port for attached storage, & as long as it's not directly reachable from the Internet, that gives you a bit more security. The usual router for home, small office use has NAT built in [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation ] & that can help isolate storage, as can good firewall software. You can connect a simple [& cheap] switch to your router [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch ] & set your router to Not provide that switch with Internet access -- hardware [PCs/laptops etc.] connected to the router can connect to whatever's plugged into the switch [e.g.storage], to other hardware plugged into the router, & the Internet.

   When it comes to staying abreast of the latest threats, major companies have the resources to try & stay in front of security threats & vulnerabilities, & they don't always suceed. Google just paid something like $60,000 to someone who found a security-related bug in Chrome that they'd missed. Microsoft has Patch Tuesday. Firefox 16 was pulled because of a secutiy-related bug on the day it was released. If your software relies on fewer resources [e.g. coders etc.] than those 3, I think it might be a bit arrogant to believe it can do better. And if you can't spend most of your time keeping up with the latest threat discoveries & monitoring your network, you're not going to be as secure as companies with people they pay to do just that.

   You can limit your exposure by taking whatever you want to have on-line access to & putting it somewhere else. Home & small office folks can put whatever files/data you want to access on a hosted server or cloud storage like Amazon, Google, & Microsoft provide & so on, & if someone manages to get your stuff, that's all they get -- it's bad enough to have someone steal your files, but far worse if while they're at it they install malware so anything new, along with passwords, account info etc. gets sent their way too.
