I've tried to download two games today from JenKat and each has come up with a threat message from AVG about "MalSign.Generic.742" and it doesn't want me to proceed. I've been using JenKat for ages without any problems, so has anyone else suddenly come up with this? It would be a great shame if there is a real problem with their games.
AVG detection on JenKat games?

I've never had a problem with their games themselves. I've always had problems with Malwarebytes detecting PUPs in the installer.
I would use their contact point and check with them. Unlike most of the freebie circuit, they've got good customer service.

You're right in that they have good customer service - I emailed yesterday and had a very prompt reply! The suggestion is that it's a false positive and they've advised me to try using Microsoft Security Essentials instead, so I might give this a go. It's a bit of a nuisance though as I'm generally happy with AVG free.

You could try to report it as a suspected false positive to AVG but my experiences on that issue weren't positive.
I once had McAfee (when it was free from Comcast) and dropped it when it consumed so many resources that I could do NOTHING. Microsoft was wanting me to do a destructive restore but I found by removing McAfee my problems went away.
That's when I went to AVG. I got tired of problems trying to contact them and report problems so I dropped them.
Then I tried Avira and when they agreed that my problem was a false positive and yet REFUSED to correct the issue, I dropped them like a hot potato!
I now use Microsoft Security Essentials. One advantage with using them is there is not Free/Paid confusion on features. It's ALL free! There have been very few false positives with them and those I did get were resolved very quickly -- usually in less than 24 hours. Also, the software itself it updated along with normal Microsoft updates so you don't have to go find them and do it manually. Note -- I do not let Windows Update download or install anything on it's own. It's only allowed to tell me about the updates and then I select what to install and when to do it!
It's been years since I had the problems with McAfee (my ME system) and even for the last of the old software (Avira) has been several years so some of my complaints may have been resolved by now. However, I'm happy with MSE and see no reason to change now.
It may not be the fastest but I'm generally happy with the full scan of my C drive weekly. It gets started between 11:30 PM and midnight and is finished between 1:30 AM and 2 AM. That's on Windows 7 HP SP2 64 bit.

Dragonlair, that's really helpful - thank you! The one question I have is that I always use Firefox rather than IE (I find it easier to use and like the AdBlock that it's got, and to be honest I like the concept of Mozilla). My question is simply to check whether Microsoft Security Essentials works equally well using Firefox as browser rather than IE? If it does, then it seems to be a no-brainer in that I'll drop AVG and go to MSE instead. (I'm also Win 7 64-bit.)

I also use Firefox mainly. MSE doesn't care about the browser. It just is. I have had absolutely no issues with the situation.
I tend to call it "Missy" for MSE and "she" gets to play every Thursday night. :)
