If the software supports Windows 98 please use the right runtimes to compile the installer!
Todays game giveaway can´t be installed on Windows 98 since the giveaway Setup.exe uses visual c++ runtimes that do not support Windows 98!
I don´t know why this error occured since yesterdays game giveaway installed fine under Windows 98.

I would get some more RAM for your system and upgrade OS to Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Might take more than just RAM, Oleg.
Fred, you might only need to Visual C++ redistributables. Did you ever install something like that on your system?
Posted 17 years ago # -
It´s a fact that the newest visual c++ runtimes don´t support older operating systems.
You can install the redistributable but the apps will keep crashing with or without these runtimes.
It´s not the first time that a giveaway can´t be installed since the giveaway installer is unable to run under Windows 98. The description of the giveaway promises to work with older systems but they fail to provide the software for the older ones. :-(Posted 17 years ago # -
To be honest, I've not really tried - the only thing I tried was getting a VB5 and VB6 programs running in '95... I've yet to try any .NET. However, unless this is coded in anything later than VC6 (and I don't think it is, as I've not seen any .NET dependencies), you should be able to run this program in '98. If not, you may be missing another dependency or you may have downloaded the wrong version (?).
Edit: Of course, it doesn't help if they didn't use any '98 subroutines.Posted 17 years ago # -
.NET works fine under Windows 98. However i didn´t try the newest framework yet.
Visual C++ Runtimes work up to version 7. Version 8 doesn´t support Windows 98.

Windows 2000; Windows Server 2003; Windows XPWindows 98 compatible software must not be compiled into an giveaway installer / activation with Visual C++ Runtimes Version 8!

Are you sure it uses VC++ Version 8 runtimes? I loaded today's (RSSWizard) setup.exe into a dependency checker (depends.exe) and I'm not sure that's the problem. What error(s) do you get trying to run it? Or was it only one particular setup program?

Read carefully. The game that didn´t install was Biathlon 2006: Go for Gold. The game giveaways of the following days worked fine again.
It happens from time to time that the installer doesn´t run under Win 98 even the software description mentions that the software supports Win 98.
That´s really annoying!Posted 17 years ago # -
I would suggest it is more likely the fault of the game developer, and their setup rather than the GOTD installer.
GOTD use the same installer each day - so if they were at fault by using the incompatible Visual C++ runtime - you would hit this problem on Win98 every day. GOTD doesn't write a new setup program for each new game they offer.

Ahem. It´s the giveaway setup that crashes with visual c++ runtime error message and not the game installer. If the game installer had crashed something would be left behind in the temporary files folder.
But the giveaway setup didn´t even unpack the game installer. They don´t use the same thing every day. Sometimes it´s just activation and the next day the installer is compiled into the setup.exe and will be unpacked to the temporary files folder after the check of availability.
And i don´t hit the problem every days since
- not every offered software is Win98 compatible
- i don´t boot up Win98 every day
- i skip a lot of offers since they are useless to me or the download is too bigMy HDD of the XP setup is nearly full. Also you are offering a lot of very huge games the last days (Merscom LLC). I can´t install them so i don´t try.

Toadays game giveaway doesn´t work... again.
Please provide working installers and not this crap.http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/323/ggotdcrashinoo6.jpg
Here you can see clear in black letters on a grey box. Giveaway setup.exe is crashing, not the software (game) i wan´t to install.
I really would like to play this game.
By the way. The crappy minigolf game messed up my computer. I had to use a backup to recover!
Maybe i should avoid all the games since they cannot be installed or they are a piece of junk.

Sorry, fred2007, I was assuming the set-up for both the apps and games were the same. It seems to be. Either way, the basic dependencies for this installer (SpaceInterceptor's GotD SETUP.EXE) are:
- WININET.DLL
- MFC42.DLL
- MSVCRT.DLL
- KERNEL32.DLL
- USER32.DLL
- ADVAPI32.DLL
- SHELL32.DLL
I'm tempted to blame the MSVCRT or MFC - and that's available to Win9x. Try to reinstall that file, perhaps?
Posted 17 years ago # -
I already have those files. But i´ll check them.
I remember updating the MSVCRT.DLL. Maybe the stupid giveaway installer uses an outdated one. OoSooo. They are all here. MFC30 to 80. What´s the problem?
I also got MSVCRT.DLL, MSVCRT20.DLL and MSVCRT40.DLL
MSVCRT.DLL is Version 6.10.8942.0 from 23rd september 2003.The rest of the files are system files belonging to windows i can´t change or update since there are no updates available.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Of course you have them - Windows comes with MFC and most installers give you MSVCRT (I think Windows even comes with that one). What I'm saying is perhaps you should replace or re-install them. And yes, you can always reinstall the DLLs. Also, oddly enough, I can't find that version of that DLL anywhere. Either you made a typo, or that one's been modified (or updated) in an undocumented way (Although it might be part of .NET's changes; You might want to try reinstalling and/or updating that, too.).
Either way, I suggest you back up the files that that redist installs, and then install that redist and see if it somehow fixes the problem.Posted 17 years ago #
