well...I always start hoping that I'm doing something really wrong. So I can be taught, learn and solve the problem. I did download Gaotd's Textaloud today, and started playing with it. I'm a language-teacher and- as an immigrant- learning brazilian portugues, I see potential of this program for my situation.
Quite soon I went to the NextUp.com site to buy some good voices (portuguese and us-english at the reasonable price of $90.
Downloaded it and started unzipping and installing.
With no succes, because, after 5 seconds, the installer stopped, telling me that:
I could not further install these voices because I hadn't purchased TextAloud or any other NextUp.com product.
I did install Gaotd's TextAloud without any problem, activated (always using the rightmouse button to do execute things as administrator)the program and it ran, without nagging me with splashup registering screen. (Although I soon found out that this was more a very stripped, tryout-like kind of version)
Nevertheless, it makes no sense selling products (ic the voices I bought at NextUp) and then crippling them because of a kinda 'bundle-purchase'
Help...what can I do now?!

I use the full version of this software (no I didn't download it today because I already have it). It works great. Being a retired cop writing in low light and now retired at 48, I simply don't see as well, so I use it when my eyes get fatigued and especially with ebooks.
What did you purchase? Addon's for the software and tried installing it first? Is that why it told you during installation that it needed the above software?
Sounds like you need to clean your drive, install TalkAloud then what you purchased, that is if I got what you are saying correct.

Hi Archangel,
I think your TextAloud just works fine for the reason that you bought it. The Gaotd-version looks very stripped to me (and a bit spartanic interface-but, this is mainly because I used to work on Apples for most of my computering years!.
I just purchased at NextUp's website two new voices from Scansoft. NextUp is advertising -of course- heavily with these voices <http://www.nextup.com/TextAloud/SpeechEngine/voices.html>
I did everything, according to the book: quitted my running TextAloud app.just trying to unzip and install the two new voices. But bost packages quit because the installer of the voices do not find/recognize a registered copy of TextAloud. I think it's just all boiling down to this.Posted 16 years ago # -
I know that we are not suppose to get support from the provider but you may want to email them about it. I'd really like to know what they reply with. I may go on and download it and compare the difference's.
GOTD may I post what I find doing a compare with what they are selling verses what's posted on our site (well your site)?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Well I indeed will try to contact them about the issue, if everything else fails. but, I first wrote an email to the responsible company NextUp, who put Textaloud on GAOTD anyway, and, who sold me the extra voices. Just very curious what they will answer.
And, as to comparing and posting: just feel free to do so Archangel!
By the way just wondering if there aren't more persons out there suffering the same problem(s) with NextUp and TextAloud.Posted 16 years ago # -
I will compare them alittle later today. I was asking GOTD if they mind if I posted the results. Don't want to do a no/no.

hi,
just to be complete, this is NextUp's explanation at <http://www.NextUp.com/ScanInstall.html>" ScanSoft RealSpeak Voice Installation Requirements
Thanks or your purchase of ScanSoft voices from NextUp.com. Because of legal restrictions, these voices can only be installed on a computer with a purchased version of TextAloud, NextUp Talker, or another of our Aloud products.
If you are receiving an error preventing you from installing your new voice, the installer was unable to verify a registered copy of one of the above programs. If you have already purchased one of those product, make sure you have downloaded and installed the program, and entered the registration code you received when purchasing. If this was done and the error continues, you may need to download an updated version of the program from
http://www.nextup.com/download.html
If you have not yet purchased TextAloud, you can purchase it now at
https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=1630311"...just wondering what they will offer/tell me about my GAOTD version?

Ok rabbel, I just did a quick scan of setup.exe on both and I'm sorry to say yes it is stripped down. GOTD's setup is 3,149,720 and mine is 4,735,877 just to give you an idea.
I imagine that the giveaway is just for the one language. I didn't test it because I didn't want to uninstall and then install this version but I imagine it works for the intended purpose. I could have gotten by with this version.
To put it in a nutshell, what they published here is meant for one purpose. If someone wants to update or in your case add on additional modules (missing) you'll need to purchase it. That is in the terms on this site for all downloads.
So little brother, your out of luck with the free download version. Try it in English and see how the free version works and if you like it, invest a little more or do some shopping.

Just for s and grins here is the version in case they don't believe that it has been decomplied from setup.exe.

Yes, indeed I do feel kinda f'd. NextUp should not offer a program to GAOTD which does NOT allow to get updated or enriched. At least they should not have the screens on this stripped versions which ENCOURAGE you to upgrade or enrich it by buying the products I bought. Yes, I DO feel f'd. I'm a teacher. In Brazil. Dollar 90 is a lot of money.

Tell them your situation and that you are teaching non US children and need this to help them learn English. I've always worked in public service but I did learn that alot of times just asking can go along way. The worse they can say is NO.
Also, if there product was successful in your school, might your government consider purchasing a large license and have there software at all schools? I know if I owned or managed a company, I'd do it. One program might bring them alot of money. Then again, I never worked for a private company. LOL
Good luck little brother to the south.

I think that is extremely misleading. We all recognise that we will not be entitled to free upgrades and updates for a GOTD, but if we pay for an upgrade, then surely that's a different matter. NextUp should have made it clear that the voice modules would not work on the program offered.
(And I thought that the developers were paid for the licence for the GOTD anyway.)I think GOTD acts in good faith, and that this is another case where they've been misled by the developers as to the true nature of the offer.

Don't get me wrong, I feel for him too but if you go by the disclaimer, its as is with no upgrade. What rabbel did was get the languages then looked for the software (thats the way I took it reading his post). Not that he was wrong, he new what his goal was.
If he had downloaded GOTD's version, then he would have seen that you couldn't get updates, technical and so forth.
I wished he had mine and I his because it would do fine for my purpose.

I've contacted the site admins - to look into this for rabbel if possible.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks BuBBy. I know he will feel alot better even if its only the admins contacting them.

Good morning friends.
Just a few remarks.
Archangel, I know, all the GAOTD software cannot be upgraded etc. I know I'm not entitled to technical support. Of course I read this disclaimer every time I downloaded one of GAOTD's programs. The thing is I downloaded TextAloud, tried it,saw -as a teacher, and student- that it might have potential. I soon found out that I needed better voices. Many GAOTD software just will allow you to buy better versions of their programs or to enrich it with plugins or -like TextAloud- make it work better with some new Voices. This is commercial thinking- I have nothing against this, because you're having this thing called freedom of choice. NextUp, even is advertising, in the helpfile of the program they offered to GAOTD to buy better voices. THIS IS THE PROCEDURE I FIND NOT CORRECT. This is why I bought the voices, AFTER having downloaded TextAloud, encouraged by NextUP. (By the way, Archangel, I'm living in the south now, Sao Paulo, Brazil, but, I'm from the North, the Netherlands. I emigrated to Brazil when I was 60, after my wife died, and I'm desperately trying to learn Portuguese while, at the same time I teach English to company persons and children and volunteers of social projects, as a private teacher.)
Second: I did of course immediately contact NextUp.com, after I bought the voices software. This was yesterday morning. Till now I didn't get an answer.
And, I really thank BuB for handing the problem to the site admins. We will wait.Posted 16 years ago # -
Just for all of you:
Kenn White of NextUp.com answered my mail regarding not the not functioning voicefiles.
He send me a little program to -officially- register TextAloud. After running this program TextAloud was registered and I could unzip and install the new Voice-files.
Thanks really!Posted 16 years ago # -
Hey problem solved. I wasn't aware that Nextup was refering people to GOTD for this program to suppliment there other software. That does change the matter. Well at least the situation is resolved.
BTW, I'm from the south too. Well south of the Ohio River in the U.S. The comment wasn't a slur. I also use "little brother to the north" for people in Canada. Since you posted a hint to your age, I'll have to change it to Big brother to the south. LOL
See you and glad your satisfied.
