OK, the 1st problem is that the download at hotud.org won't work -- their copy seems to be the original shareware, which can be installed twice -- installing moves some file or other to the hard drive, uninstall moves it back, & without that on the floppy or hard drive it won't run. However using Google with the search term 1995card I found several sites that had the files stored in a directory -- just right-click -> save or download each one. The number of files & file dates vary, I've no idea their legality, & while they would run, there were some issues trying to run it on this PC, so you might want to try downloads from several sites to see what works best for you, & DO virus scan everything.
1995card may run OK in XP in a DOS box, but I had display hardware issues & with several tries it aborted saying it needed a Microsoft compatible mouse. 1995card will run in DOSBox, but I can't say how well because there I again had mouse issues.
If you're running Vista 32 bit you could try creating a C:\1995CARD folder & copying a set of game files you downloaded into that folder. If you're running 64 bit Vista, or if you'd just prefer to do it this way, you can try DOSBox or another DOS emulator or a Virtualbox VM using a 32 bit Windows guest. Running Setup.exe mainly lets you make some soundcard setup adjustments. Right-clicking 1995CARD.exe & selecting Properties you can set compatibility to win95 & make quite a few memory related settings [maybe experiment & see what works best?]. If you run into the no Microsoft Mouse issue I encountered the easiest way out *may* be to buy a <$5 mouse & make sure it uses the generic Microsoft mouse driver Vista will probably install when you plug it in. If you run into display related errors you *might* have to switch screen rez beforehand to VGA if your hardware supports it. Another alternative *might* be to use an old win98 start disc, putting the 1995Card folder on the same CD or USB stick if your hard drive is NTFS, then once you booted into DOS, change to that folder & run 1995CARD from the command line like originally intended.
What took so long was playing with that original download... In XP Pro I fired up Wondershare Timefreeze, installed the Winimage trial, used it to put the 1995card.IMZ image on a floppy, then used EMT4WIN to create a regular image off that. Running install from the floppy in XP Pro I got the usual need to install from floppy error. Back in win7 I got my old win98 VM going in the newer win7 Virtual PC host, but didn't have any luck getting the floppy or image into it. So I created a new win98 VM in VBox, using that same VHD file, & once I got all the hardware installations out of the way, mounted the regular floppy image I'd made. In win98 I got the full message that the install floppy was missing whatever counter file. 98's too old for the VBox additions to install/work, so I created a new vhd in win7, added a couple of sets of downloaded game files to that, unattached the vhd from win7, attached it to the win98 VM, & that's where I 1st ran into Microsoft mouse issues -- but that was getting further than previously! Then I started up win7's XP Mode VM & tested the game as-is & using DOSBox with the dosshell-portable front end. Attempting it as-is I got display issues -- the VM didn't want to switch to VGA -- & using DOSBox I had no mouse control, probably because of the way the VM works in win7. If I can remember I've got an old MS mouse sitting here I found housekeeping a few months ago & cleaned up, but have yet to remember to test & see if it works... since I've got to test it anyway I may as well give it a go to see if the games works in XP Pro when I'm in that version of Windows later today.
