The latest build of Ballikin is up (http://ballikin.com/download/).
Alpha.19 has:
- Campfires being placeable,
- Sheep will flee from you if you hit them. Pinkeyes will flee too, when low on health.
- Your weapons have their own Damage and combine if you dual-wield.
- The Item section of the game engine has been completely re-written to allow for (in the future) elements like Item Attributes (Glowing Sword of the Shiny Bat Guano) .. That kind of stuff!
- Your Tools and Weapons now show in-game when you use them! Huzzah!
- And now, at long last .. we present the Flyswat! A weapon that will surely strike fear into the hearts of your enemies.

Ballikin seems to be progressing quickly, with news that Alpha 20 has been released:
The latest build of Ballikin is released here, http://ballikin.com/download.
Build contains such goodness as:
- You can make and wear Copper Armor! Recipes for a Helmet, Chestplate and Boots are available.
- The HUD shows you wielding two weapons (if you are).
- Waypoints! Nah nah nah nah (batman) Waypoints! You can now fast-travel across the face of Serenity.

Pinkeye
* (Change) Pinkeye base damage is now 2 (was 1).
Jotun
* (Add) The mysterious and solitary Jotun can now be seen in the outer regions of Serenity. Be wary! They are large and can cause great damage.
A Jotun
Large, angry and very dangerous. The Jotun are giant-like creatures who live in solitude.
Player
* (Fix) When standing still and harvesting/attacking and not having boots on would cause your feet to disappear!
World Map
* (Add) A World Map has been added (button on HUD or the “M” key). Shows what Regions you have discovered Waypoints for and the location of said Waypoints.

Saving
* (Fix) The Block History logging was growing longer the more the Player travelled about the World. Now saves much quicker (and betterer!).
Terrain Generation
* (Update) Trees should no longer spawn -around- the Player. They will still spawn around all sorts of other things though. The wonderful mystical whimsy of the Kingdom of Serenity!
Character Screen
* (Fix) Double-clicking to equip an item where there was already an item in the Equipment slot would result in the item going nowhere.
Inventory
* (Update) Inventory sorted by Name and searchable (filtered search).

Recipes
* (Update) Overhaul of the interface. Similar to the inventory, better placement, images for what is being made and for the ingredients.
* (Add) Filter for Recipes upgraded to include weapons, armor and tools (along with blocks and items).

Doors
* (Add) The invaluable Wooden Door has been added! When CLOSED it is impassable (not for long), when OPEN it’s .. open.

Sentients
* (Change) Attack radius changed, and standardised (uses globals rather than actual number in code).
Block History
* (Update) Worked on the code, although it’s hard to know .. a bit too complicated. Placed blocks (eg. Wooden Crates) would go missing on save/load.
Bad Snails
* (Add) A new mob has been added .. watch out! Bad snails (they have red eyes, thusly, evil) come out at night (and hide away in the day). They have super-enhanced tracking ability, and won’t give up easily!
The red eyes .. Reeeeddddd eyeeeesss!
Mean and nasty, covered in slime .. Bad Snails!
Player
* (Fix) On dying, the current health of the player is now set to their max health (as opposed to the level 1 beginning health).

Ballikin - Alpha 28 Update

Stu Andrews sent word about the 28th alpha release of Ballekin, which with respect to the previous report contains the following enhancements:
Character Levels (ties to what you can harvest/create)
When you do something (harvest, combat, create) you get XP (yay for Guild Wars 2)
Item Durability is in (Weapons and Tools so far)
Blocks show their own durability (actually, it's density for blocks) when being harvested.
Bad Snails! (they only come out at night)

I’m Actually Doing Something!

With Build 27 came the visible recognition of harvesting (and item durability).
The first time I harvested and the little “lifebar” appeared on a block, going downwards to nothing, my heart leapt!
In my Minecraft playing history, there was always the durability display.
But in Ballikin, my brain had been going thus far without any muscle memory of this, because it didn’t exist. Duh.
So, seeing the little bar appear and steadily shrink sent big-props-endorphins running to and through my brain. This is REALLY COOL!
It’s a visual recognition system.
I’m actually doing something!

Chests
* (Add) Wooden Chests are in the game. They are fairly inexpensive to make, but do require Stone, so will need to get beyond the first “suburb”. They don’t do anything except open and close at the moment. There is no “inventory” display/functionality.
Non Block Blocks
* (Change) So there used to be a queue that held “blocks” like Doors and Chests. As with the GameItems queue, GPFs could occur because there wasn’t any synch logic (accessing, reading/writing queue from multiple threads at same time). So it’s now a memory file. AND what is really cool is that using a LONG field in the file record, I can now store the address of the class instance.
Interface
* (Change) BIG CHANGE. All main windows (Game, Character, HUD) are now found within the one MDI frame. They are always open. Other windows like the Map and the Menu are still popups.
Terrain Generation
* (Update) Trees should no longer spawn near any Player-placed blocks. Pretty lame logic really, but will do for the moment (trying to stop trees from growing in your houses).
* (Update) Water has undergone a similar logic (but not exactly the same) as Trees.
Character
* (Update) Info next to each of the character attributes (STR, DEX, CON).

Interface
* (Change) Removed the “Maximise” attribute for the main frame, for the moment.
* (Change) HUD now within the Game window.
* (Change) Experience bar moved up the top right.
* (Change) The Character window now appears in the middle of the game screen, and Pauses the Game while open.
* (Add) New “Welcome” screen. From here you can play the game. Exiting a game comes back to here.
* (Change) Help icon changed.
* (Change) Location of some messages changed. — this is temporary, as the messaging system needs an overhaul.
* (Add) Ballikin icon added to the various dialog windows.
* (Update) Text added to Waypoint window.

Game Start
* (Change) On loading a Player/World, all “keyboard shortcut” tips are shown.
* (Change) Create buttons on Player and World windows are default, so you can click the enter key when typing in the name and it will auto-click the create button.
* (Fix) If you created a player then deleted then created a player with the same name, you broke the game.
* (Fix) If you closed (clicked the red x) the Player or World Select/Create screens, the game would break.
* (Fix) The Copper Helmet image resources were not being cached properly on start.
Blueprints
* (Fix) Description text field should have been read-only.
* (Fix) Description field wasn’t being filled.
Recipes
* (Fix) The Steel recipe was missing the “Coal” Ingredient.
* (Add) The “Healing Balm” item has been added. Heals you for 10% of your maximum health. Is “Actionable”, like a campfire, so is triggered by a right-click (after putting in the Action slot).
* (Add) The “Lantern” item has been added. Increases (doubles-ish) light radius in the dark.
Mobs
* (Change) Pinkeye base damage increased from 2 to 5.
* (Change) The range for Copper Coins that can (percentage chance) drop from a Pinkeye increased to 1 – 10 (from 1-5).
* (Add) More items added into the mob drop logic (not just coins, and the paltry leaf or two from a Bad Snail).
Blocks
* (Change) Base Density of the Trunk block decreased from 10 to 5.
Player
* (Change) When you die, any experience you had (for the current level) is removed. So if you are halfway to level 11 when you die, you start back at level 10 with no experience towards level 11. There has to be a better way to say that!
* (Change) The amount of health given when levelling up has been decreased from 10 to 6.
* (Update) Experience Levels tweaked a little.
Character Window
* (Change) You can no longer “minus” the character points to move them around. Once you add the point to an attribute, it stays!
* (Change) The “plus” character point buttons only appear when there are points to distribute.
* (Fix) If you used the Recipe Type dropdown, all of that type of recipes would show.
* (Fix) When changing the Recipe Type dropdown, the newly “top” record in the browse will have the correct info (Image + Description) showing.
Interface
* (Fix) The reporting on what the Player picked up was not correctly totalling the items picked up.
* (Add) When outside of the player radius (approx 3 blocks) if you right-click on a block, or a mob, a popup will give you information on what you’ve clicked on.
* (Update) The yellow “selected” square logic (that follows the mouse) has been upgraded. Should be an increase in speed of drawing the square.
* (Add) Any damage you give is now displayed on screen for a couple of seconds. Critical Hits are displayed differently, and if you Dodge (you need at least one point in Dexterity to be able to Dodge or perform a Critical Hit) you get told too. Also, Experience given is “popped up”. And when you use a Healing Balm, the amount healed is popped up.
Graphics
* (Add) You can now resize the Ballikin window. This is very experimental at the moment, and may result in badness and will definitely slow your game down.
* (Change) A lot of the “in game” graphics have increased in proportions. Blocks mainly, have gone up from 12×12 to 16×16 pixels. This means LESS on the normal screen, but with the ability now to increase the size of the window, it means you can make your window big. This is a big deal, I think.
Blacksmith
* (Change) “Upgrade” and “Enhance” tabs removed.
* (Add) “Breakdown” tab added.
Light
* (Change) The light radius for Torches has been changed from 3 to 5.
World Generation
* (Fix) When checking whether a Sentient could be placed, there was bad code when checking the “Feet” blocks, was using the Block X, rather than (Block X – 1)*Block Width to get the actual XPos. — this may not be totally fixed, blurg –
Terrain Generation
* (Change) Rarity (how far out you need to go) for Gold and Silver reduced.
* (Change) Number of deposits, and the blocks per deposit for Copper and Iron have been reduced. This means less of them in a world.
Pathing
* (Change) A couple of minor changes to the Sentient Pathing logic. It’s not great, needs to be better, but not sure how to do that yet.
