I installed Bandicam back in May 2011. It registered ok & have been using it since. Launched it today & now says unregistered. This has happened a few time before with other software! Is this a plot from giveawayoftheday and the authors to make us buy their FREE software???
Has this hapened to anyone else, and what is the answer to fix the problem?

Hi seemorebutz, no it's not a plot. There are usually a simple reason for such things happening. Have you used any registry cleaners recently? Sometimes these may cause giveaways to stop being registered by deleting the registration keys.
Unfortunately I didn't keep bandicam, so can't check to see if it's registered.
The way the project works is usually you get unlimited use from any giveaway unless it's one that requires yearly subscriptions, for example an anti-virus program or firewall. Also all giveaways are not upgradable to newer versions unless you are willing to buy the products. In essence you get the program for free for as long as you have the operating system you installed it to. If you have to format, or re-install your OS for any reason, you will lose the registration details.
If you find a giveaway has become invaluable it may be time to think about contributing to the developers coffers by purchasing a licence, or alternatively hoping that it or a similar program may be given away again sometime soon.
It may be worth checking the giveaway page and looking through all of the comments because community members often post freeware alternatives that you may find do the same job.. :)

p.s. if the giveaway came with a registration code and you kept the read me with the code you may be able to reactivate it, but that said, the terms & Conditions clearly state that the giveaway is freely available only between the 24 hour gveaway period, so re activating it after the date could be constued as stealing.

Firstly: The software you download from GOTD is NOT Free software.
The programmes are commercial software, you had to pay for normally.
Secondly: Giveawayoftheday is a reputable company, they don't use illegal "plots".

It's always worth checking when you install a GOTD on the giveaway day that the program you install doesn't have an automatic update feature. If it does you'll need to manually switch it off, as GOTDs never include rights to updates, as one of the T & Cs.

No, I did not update. I learned that lesson the hard way! Didn't use any registry cleaners that I know of, or anything running in the background. I don't understand why registry cleaner would un-register a program. Does this mean you should NEVER clean your registry?
Thanks for your answers. It is very frustrating to get use to a program and then for no reason it stops working!

Well, clean your registry with great care if you must if Windows seems sluggish, or if you install/uninstall a lot of programs and games, but always always back up your registry first, just in case.
In regard to what the registry does, amongst many other things, it stores license details for programs.
Depending on how these license details are stored by the program in question, it is possible but unusual for them to be deleted by a registry cleaner.
Many registry cleaners allow you to choose what to clean and check entries to delete first, but it sometimes takes a real expert to figure out what does what!
If you haven't made other changes, System Restore might get your program re-registered if you haven't uninstalled it.
