LittleMac, the activation works fine - I had no problems. What you need to do is to click the setup.exe first, and click on the "activate.exe" executable next, BEFORE you actually open/access the program.
The 2nd option is to click the "activate.exe" executable first, and then click the "setup.exe" executable.
Either way, the key element is to click the "activate.exe" executable before you open the program.
In any case, the activation step works just fine - nothing wrong with it at all, and as you've been a GOTD member since Sept. 2, 2007, you should be familiar with how the GOTD activation process works.
Interesting -- I just tried to 'Activate' this after 'Setup,' and got the following message: "Activate.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I had not launched Inpaint. I've uninstalled and downloaded/reinstalled and I still get the same error message. I also tried to 'Activate' first -- same error.
Unfortunately, I had first uninstalled Inpaint 3 from 1/11/11 :(
Anyone else run into this problem, or know how to solve it? I'll continue to try to 'Activate,' but I'm not holding out much hope.
Suze - try temporarily de-activating your anti-virus and firewall programs, as many times they will actively and aggresively interfere with download activations.
This may very well be the problem of why you are encountering this error.
Hopefully, this will help, and I'm interested in knowing how things turn out.
Activation.exe accompanying InPaint today is just a small app that enters the key into the User section of Windows Registry. Vista/7 may need to run Activate.exe as admin [right-click menu]. Uninstalling today's GOTD does not delete that license/registration key, so Suze, if you're not able to get Activate to run, you should hopefully be able to re-install the older version if you still have it or can find it on-line.
If/when Activate, or any app won't run for you, as Inas mentioned you can try disabling your AV software, &/or you can try Windows Safe Mode from the boot menu or using msconfig, which causes some drivers & services to not start with Windows in case they're blocking or conflicting -- just need to make sure in this case that you still have on-line access for Activate.exe to be able to activate. If you're running win7 & have its VPC set up, you can also install/activate in a VM & copy over to win7 proper.
Hi, Suze, I'm not a pro like mikiem2, and have some difficulties to explain in English, as my system and I are speaking German.
When I got that error, it was mostly helpful to run activate.exe with the right-click-administrator (in Vista / 7) like mikiem advised.
The next try if that doesn't help is a rule for DEP ( Data Execution Prevention ).
Here are some links where you can get some more info about it.

or just ask Google: "How do I turn off Data Execution Prevention"
Good luck.

To both Inas and mikiem2: many thanks for your suggestions and explanations! I disabled both my anitvirus and firewall, but that didn't solve the problem :(
Although I've never needed to "Run as Admin" (I'm the only user, and on XP), I just did that, and it seemed to work! I was able to use Inpaint on an image AND save it as well.
Many thanks again!
Thank you graylox! I must have been writing my post as you were writing yours :) I will check out the links you posted -- always looking to learn.
BTW, would that any German I spoke were 1/16th as good as your English!!
Wonderful, Suze, am happy you were able to solve the problem (thanks to mikiem2).
Inas, that makes at least two of us! And I really appreciate the level of participation and help from this community.
yes, Suze, this community is very friendly and helpful indeed...
I am brand new at this, and need to know what I've done wrong.
When I work on a photo, then go to 'file' then save as, it reads:
This feature is available in registered version only. Buy it now?
I do not know what I'm doing wrong.
unzip the archive you downloaded- do not let xp/vista/7 access it as a folder- as you have it installed, rub activate.exe- for vista-7, use run as administrator.
Thank you goodgotd and others! Got it :)
