Here we go again...'wah wah wah...I can't install the software...It won't work...Giveaway downloads never work for me...What do I need this for ?'
Good grief...read the @#^^%$* read me file first...NEVER have a problem with installing anything from GAOTD.
This is decent software...currently using Folder Marker Pro...this one is pretty much the same.
Instead of whining about not being able to install anything...just go back down to Mommy's basement and get someone who knows what they're doing to install it for you!
Geez...it's like the same comments from the same people over and over and over...

Mothman....Greetings. A most excellent post.
Firstly, the software. I agree 100% that Folderico is a decent piece of software. I am the sort of person who prefers to have software loaded, free or otherwise, that I will use and not have just sitting there doing next to nothing. Folderico falls well into that category, it is indeed very handy to have especially when you have a fairly messy digital foot print. I guess though the only question that needs to be asked and is asked when software of this nature appears on this excellent site, just why would you pay for something that Micro$oft O.S's do anyway?....Not complaining, just wondering?
Secondly, those troglodytes who really should be licenced to use and own a computer. Your advice to these plebs is most salient. However what I would suggest is, there is something more important to read first than the read me file and that is the System requirements......because in all seriousness, you get some noddy's trying to install software on the likes of XP when it is not compliant and then they end up here complaining about it.....

I have been using the software Dr. Folder, could someone who has used both tell me if this can do anything more or better than Dr. Folder? Thanks in advance.

Dr Icon,
Just compared them, Dr. Folder's images look better and crisper to me.

I've been using this for a couple of years now. I love it. Does what it says it will do with ease. A good thing. Thanks for the upgrade.

Right click on any folder, click customize and then click on change icon, chose anything in the icon folder or import more if you do not have the desired colors, done.

I have used this program as long as I can remember. Helps me to be able to use a colour or icon to prioritize folders. Busy changing computers and will sorely miss having the program. Not ready to take today's giveaway. (tears). But grab it if it is something you can use. My husband thinks it is nonesense. Each to his own :).

Seemed like an interesting software. Upon running activate.exe, however, my entire system (Win 7 64U) went all wonky with one after another program crashing. It seemed to have a particular dislike for Chrome add ons, but it also crashed my Logitech mouse driver.
Uninstalled quickly and didn't even have a try at changing folder colors. Owell.

It does what it says on the tin, quick & simple with no fuss, Cheers!

Ran set up, ok. Ran activate, "failed to connect, tried it 3x." Bad set up system, half the time I have to restart Win7 in safe mode with networking. Makes one think if I really need the software having to go through such gyrations.

Looks good but I cannot get mine to register.
Clicked the Activate.Exe but nothing.
W7 64bit here.
Will it make any difference I wonder?

Clicking on "Activate.exe" (after running setup.exe, as instructed in the readme file) does nothing.
(This has been a longstanding, consistent problem with Giveaway of the Day offers whenever the "offer" includes and requires use of a separate activate.exe file. As this problem has been found across different computers, I assume the Windows 7 installation on a given computer is not the problem.)
As installing the version 5.1 software uninstalled my 4.0 installation, can anything be done to get 5.1 to activate? Or is Giveaway of the Day actually Takeaway of the Day, and now again left me with no usable software?

xyz1,
Hmm that's Interesting not working, i have version 4 Something (4.0) Maybe can't remember anyway i have had
no problems with the older version and i have an 8 core with Win7 Pro installed runs perfect, So maybe i will skip
this new Version. If you have lost your older version Try System Restore and of course choose a Restore point
just before you installed v5.1 or the closest as possible and see if that brings back your version 4.0. This has worked with Software in the past as long as it's not left to long, I Always make a restore point just before installing new Software. But if you have to uninstall old Versions first then a Restore point needs to be made Just Before Uninstalling the Older version first, Good for GOTD's in case either new versions don't work or just don't Like, Remember if the Older version was a GOTD than no Key or License to RE-INSTALL, So that's why it's Best to make a Restore point JUST Before uninstalling older GOTD Versions. If your Lucky you may have a Restore Point that the system put there sometime Before You uninstalled the older version.
Hope that helps you get your older version back at least. You can only Try and see. See what happens?

Mark,
Sorry the First part of my Message might not work as i just realized you uninstalled older version first,
So the Last part of my Message is the only Option for the System Restore, FIND a Restore point Sometime Before you Uninstalled Version 4.0.

Mark,
Thanks, I appreciate your time in posting the response. But the program itself takes care of the uninstall. I would never waste time (and the potential trouble--as everything else on the computer works fine) with doing restore points (and then restoring) for such unneeded and relatively trivial software as this--and would instead gladly pass on any such "deals" requiring anything beyond a download and install--which always works with any and all other such websites as this except for GOTD (with its use of the additional-step 'activate.exe' files for activation.
Apart from that, there is no indication given in the description of the updating/improvements done for version 5.1 (from 4.0), and post-installation I can see nothing that would appear to justify making this upgrade from what had been a functional v. 4.0--let alone that would justify then having to deal with the GOTD-designed problem now encountered.
There are other more reliable software programs that do the same thing (e.g., Folder Marker), and other far more consistently reliable giveaway sites that do not use GOTD's poorly designed, unreliable and malfunctioning activation installers. (Others here on this same page have subsequently noted this same problem.)

Hi, I've been always a fan of FolderIco since it was first introduced here some years ago, and find right-click menus for it most convenient, useful and easy to manage feature. So when Today's Offer of its latest version 5.1 appeared - I was naturally interested what's new in it. You can find it here:
https://www.folderico.com/download.html Thanks for the Offer. Nice Gift!:)

I have version 4,0 from an earlier giveaway. Do I need to uninstall tis older version before I install this? Or do I just install this into the same folder? The readme file does not address this issue.

gpc111, I didn't uninstall the old version and it all seems fine. Version 4.0 is now gone and 5.1 is working okay.

I will update my program. Thank you Jerry. Thank you GOTD Team and TeoreX.

I've been using FolderIco for years and find it to be quite useful little piece of software. It integrates itself in the right click menu so it’s really easy to use. I think it works best if you don't exaggerate with coloring too many folders, because you will end up where you started. So, color the folders you use most frequently and/or by the content and you will spot them much faster. In my experience, 4-5 different colors works best, i.e. for average user (like myself). There are also many folder symbols you can choose from, but colors are much easier to spot. You can use it to mark the folders on external drives, as well. In that case, the application will put a small, hidden .ini file in the root, so be careful not to delete it when you are cleaning up that drive or all color settings will be gone (on that drive only).

Yanco, many thanks for taking the trouble to post your helpful thoughts on how to get the best out of the utility. It's positive reports like this which tips the balance on whether to try it out or not. And thanks as always to GOTD.
