After changing my folders, I kept getting memory access errors. The errors stopped after I reset the folders to the default appearance. The uninstall did not remove everything.

Hi! I love this folder marker a lot. With your "priority" icons I know what projects need to be worked on and able to meet the deadlines. Thanks a lot! Highly recommended

I don't think this works with WinXP. Kept getting "access violation" errors. Finally had to give up on it. :-(

#103, your explanation of memory consumption is incorrect. The problem is with Folder Marker's Explorer shell extension. It's merely right-clicking on a folder that's causing the problem. Any changes that you make to a folder are stored immediately.

I like it, thanks! I've been collecting icons to differentiate folders with works in process, and right-clicking is so much quicker than going through the steps of changing the folder properties.

#101, true, and an interesting observation. However, when you restart your system, explorer's memory usage returns to normal. I suspect this is Window's way of storing the change in properties until you reboot and the new system setting is saved. If you change folder properties manually, not using Folder Marker at all, exactly the same thing will happen... explorer will tie up memory until you reboot.

#71, #101, you're right, it does eat memory. Another defective GOTD offering. If the folder that you right-clicked on was in an Explorer window, you can just close that window and the memory will be recovered. I used AutoRuns do disable its Explorer shell extension.

Well, I just got done reading thru all the notes here. Nobody seems to have had the problem I had. Namely, that after installing it, my Right-Click menu on folders has changed. Several items that are used regularly by me (such as EXPLORE) are gone. I don't know why, but after uninstalling it (at about 11:50 this evening), I didn't have enough time to reinstall it and re-register it during the 24 hour timeframe. I guess I'll try the free version and see if it causes the same problem. Still, I wonder what went wrong. In the meantime, I'll try some of the suggestions that others have made for similar alternate programs. (thanks, #49, 51, 52. I'll check those out).

I have to admit I thought this was a silly program , but , for free , what the heck. I'm truely glad , now , that I downloaded it. It makes finding the type of folder(action) I want easier, by color grouping & as an added bonus my desktop is more like a rainbow of colors , rather then a sea of that off yellow, lol.
Thank you GOTD , this is a great program , & for a Saturday , & not a screensaver. YAAAAAAHOOOOO
kidding

I see little value in this, considering that Windows already allows you to customize folders. Apart from freeware alternatives, there are probably free folder icons available somewhere (other than what Windows has anyway). And Windows' icon selection is larger than what this program offers.

Installed and registered fine. While testing this app I found that it can not restore icons to their original on XP. Thankfully I have 'TuneUp Utility 2007' which saved the day and restored the original icons. For that reason I've un-installed 'FolderMarker'. $20 for this is not even a consideration considering the free alternatives, and the fact that it would NOT restore icons to the originals. The only one it did restore was my 'music' folder, and at that only replaced the colored one with a Windows default manila folder, not the one with the music note in it. 4 of 10

Sorry ArcticLine, needs to work as advertised and needs something special for $20. Can't justify paying $20 for this even if it worked!

For any of you who have a problem with your icons not showing properly and you can't seem to get them back (i.e.--most of them display as an ugly generic icon on your desktop and you can't tell what's what), this worked for me (Windows XP):

1) Uninstall the offending application (like iColorFolder).
2) Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager.
3) On the Processes tab, select explorer.exe and click the End Process button. Explorer shell will go away (don't panic).
4) Press CTRL-ALT-DEL again, and under the File menu choose New Task (Run...). Type in "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) to restart Explorer shell. Voila! All your icons are back.

By the way, it appears the Vista mistake may have been made by Gaotd, not the developer. The Vista compatability is not listed here now (but was earlier). The ArcticLine site does not state Vista OS.

Dave (85), I appreciate you mentioning the workaround--which I already know--but I was commenting on the software limitation. It is posted as Vista compatable; in fact, it is not. It may be okay to make that mistake on "freeware" but when a company makes clearly false claims for what it sells it is called fraud. Pointing out the help file problem was meant as a service to the developer as well as a warning to other Vista users.

Not just "complaining"....get a clue!

I normally don't say to much if I don't like the product, but this one is for kids. The program dosn't even have a good folder or Icon selection. You cannot add colored folders with a letter.

Don't waste your time on this program!! Just get a free icon manager and it runs circles around this one.

This is for Swan or anyone else who had a problem with Glary. It messed up my computer, windows keeps having a problem and needs to close. My boot sector has been changed, and my windows installer will not work. I can't download Java and Quicktime updates, for the life of me. I used Glary and I thought I was very careful with it, but I guess I thought wrong. Needless to say, Glary is gone now, like yesterdays breakfast. If anyone has any advice, I would so appreciate it. Does anyone know of a alternative to the windows installer? GOTD, that might make for a nice download of the day.Just a nice thought,(please). I like todays download, so far, so good. Thanks GOTD.

Nice program. No-go in Vista though. It installed but doesn't work properly. However, for those of you complaining about no "help" files in Vista need only copy the WinHlp32.exe file +WinHlp.exe files from Windows XP windows directory and copy them to the Vista windows directory. Help awaits.

Like the idea. Never really thought about how windows really sucks that way in comparison with some other OS's.

Tried the program and it does what it should. Never the less it is overpriced considering that it is only a little aid at best and there are lots of other programs around that offer something very similiar and sometimes even more for free.

Bringing it out in 3 flavours (free, home and business) is milking it. If one had to pay for it I can see it possibly go for 5 USD or so, anything more would decrease market share.

My thanks go to #49 Hugh, #52 rayser, #61 sfenson, #65 alhall, #67 eeZee for showing what alternatives there are out there.
In this case I didn't know any myself and now..... I don't know what to try first. :)

Per the readme file, I unzipped the folder to a temp directory. I clicked on the "Activate" button and was advised that the product was activated. I then ran the Setup program and was told my copy had expired and that I should go to the Home page to get a current version. I found the free version on the Home site, downloaded and ran it, and everything worked. Was all this a trick to get me to go to the Home page where I might decide to buy something?

I like to idea of folders icons customising: after that it's much easier to find those folders you use more often. Folder Marker is a great help with this task. Generally it's possible to change folders using Windows tools but they are not so convenient and with Folder Marker you can change much more folders than with Windows tools. A nice feature is Restore Default with which you can quickly and easily restore the default folder look.

One of the greatest features of Folder Marker which I've never seen in any other programs of this type is 'Make customized folder distributable' (portable) - it means that customised folder will look the same on any other computer or device (e.g. flash memory stick) where you put it.

Not for me. I've used the freeware version for a while, worked OK.

But, now I prefer to use IconTweaker. Freeware, maybe a bit more complicated then
FolderMarker, but that's because it has more options.

(And together with IcoFX, you can add and/or edit any icon you want.)

Thanks anyway, GAOTD.

This is great! Useful and ingenious it is genuinely quick and ultra easy to use.

Contrary to previous comments, the "restore defaults" instantly put the folder icons back to the Windows' standard yellow design on my XP.

The one thing I am confused by is that it says it is the Home 2.0 version, yet clicking Help says "Enter Registration Code" - unlike previous GAOTD downloads, no registration code was provided, so where would this be located and is this in fact the trial version until such code is input??
