I do not like the way MS embeds programs into the OS. eg Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer(File Manager or whatever they are calling it now)
I do not like Windows Explorer
And I certainly do not recommend messing with Windows Explorer (messing with the file system)
What I recommend (and use) is XYPlorer.
It has Tabs, and tons of other great options)
And it is portable, so changes that you do within it, cannot hurt your Windows in any way.
There is a free version (XYPlorerFree 17.4) that you can get from -

@Developer,
I run xampp with Tomcat. After installing FileMarker.NET, xampp control panel reports:
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Checking for service (name="Tomcat7"): Service not installed
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Service Path: Service Not Installed
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Checking default ports...
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Portblocker Detected: FileMarkerService.exe
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Checking for App: c:\xampp\tomcat\bin\tomcat7.exe
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Portblocker Path: Unable to open process
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Portblocker Service Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\FileMarker.NET\FileMarkerService.exe
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Problem detected!
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Port 8080 in use by "C:\Program Files (x86)\FileMarker.NET\FileMarkerService.exe"!
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] Tomcat WILL NOT start without the configured ports free!
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] You need to uninstall/disable/reconfigure the blocking application
10:08:35 PM [Tomcat] or reconfigure Tomcat and the Control Panel to listen on a different port
I have too many other things depending on xampp using what it was originally configured for.
How do I change the port used by FileMarker.NET?
... and why does FileMarker.NET need to have any port access at all? Your program should be affecting Registry entries. What are you using port 8080 for?

Try selecting a ".bat" file or a ".cmd" file. They can be selected, and icons chosen, but the Apply results in an error:
The files with ".bat" extension can't be customized.
The files with ".cmd" extension can't be customized.
The error occurs even if run as an Administrator. There is no indication that this is a system limitation, or a problem in FileMarket.NET.
If they cannot be customized, why allow user to select them? Let the user know as soon as possible that the remaining steps are futile.
What is odd is that the icon choices change for ".bat" and ".cmd" files compared to a ".txt" file, so the program knows to present different choices to the user. That makes me think it is a bug in the program.
Anyone have other ideas on this?

Why does everyone over think everything...of course it has to change the registry...how else will it change a file icon ?
Who cares what version it is...it's FREE.
Everybody with they're over kill anti virus software...should not have to disable it to install anything...
Read the 'read me' file...stop whining about not being able in install anything.
Software Informer comes up all the time...you DO NOT have to install it.
This is a really decent program.

Not sure if download is actually activated or not. How can I tell to be certain?

Catherine,
open the program...click on 'about'...if it's asking for a serial number it's not registered.
try reading the 'read me' file

Creating a restore point is required; It penetrates deep in the operating system!!! Much more than other similar programs. This has been a concern for several machines.

Can somebody tell me how I would install GOTD software?
I extract the zip and get the install exe.
Running the install exe, I get a window "Successfully activated" while in fact no installation has been made - problem with antivirus possibly?
BUT in that window "Successfully activated", there are two buttons "Install Software Informer" and "Close", and I do NOT want to install "Software Informer" which is a spy program, so I click on button "Close", and no install is made here either.
So does GOTD makes the installation of "Software Informer" mandatory, in order to leave that "Successfully activated" window, for then the installation process to begin finally, or is it all an antivirus problem, and here with this window, the installation process should already have been taken place?
(I have this problem with GOTD ONLY, so for month, I have never successfully installed anything from them anymore; I have asked this question on another offer yet, without having had any answer - I should probably resign from even looking out for "giveaways" here which never work for me?)
Thank you for an answer, and no, I'm NOT willing to click on button "Install Software Informer" just to try.

H, in the Readme there are some indications about your problem:
---
IMPORTANT: please note that due to the Themida wrapper usage your installation might be blocked by your antivirus (AVG, Avast or Kaspersky)!
This will result in no program installed on your PC even if your antivirus reports no files are blocked.
In order to install the program, you'll have to temporally disable your antivirus.
If you have Kaspersky antivirus, disable it and restart the computer.
Please make sure it won't start automatically with the computer.
Now please download the program archive once again and try to install it.
Sorry for the inconvenience!

H, as an addendum to Ootjes comment, the installation of Software Informer is entirely optional and has never been a pre-requisite for the installation of any giveaway here. If the workaround actions described in the readme.txt still don't help try rebooting into safe mode with network support and then try installing again.

H, You did not mention that when you extracted the zipped file and ran setup you did it all within the same folder. I believe that simply extracting the downloaded zip from the download folder and trying to run setup will give you problems with installation. That's been my understanding -- so I always move the zipped download to a folder and then extracting it within that folder, and I have never had any problems with installation. I disregard the "successfully activated " window, and it is NOT MANDATORY to check the "Software Informer" box, and close is the accurate response.
It is possible you may need to disable your AV and sometimes open properties to make sure the installation is not blocked, which you correct by simply unblocking it.
These things accomplished I rarely have had problems with gaotd installations over the yeas. Hope this helps.

If you get a small pop-up while installing, disable your virus protection for 10 minutes. Installed perfectly on Win 7 Home Pro 64 bit. Thank you, GOTD.

Their download versioned 1.0.1.0 is digitally signed and the signing date is 01 November 2013 17:50:38 which is quite a long time ago so there has certainly been no development work done since ALL the previous giveaways of this despite problems being reported during those giveaways. Also first public preview of windows 10 was in October 2014 so there has been no dev work on this for the entire life of Windows 10 in all its guises!

TK, Just like on may 19, 2017 a test was done in Win10-64 Pro fall.
It did it's job.
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/filemarker-net-pro/
BUT all the changes are only visible in the Windows, where the changes are made.
In another Windows, nothing:

Folder Marker: changes made with that program are visible in other Windows.

TK,
Correct and dev Roman is also the only dev I know that comes with desktop push notifications. A much too expensive tool. For comparison: for this price you have, for example, a Total Commander! And then there are the extra icon packs. Actually this dev fails all along the line, there is no passion for his own product, except selling and selling and selling. Unfortunately it does not work that way.

Ootje, yes that is likely because to change file type icons the changes have to be made to the local machines registry file associations icon parameters so are specific to the host machine not the file system, whereas folder icons is managed by an embeded desktop.ini file and the custom icon also placed in folder so if the filesystem is moved to another windows system then the embedded desktop.ini file and icon move with the filesystem and so the custom icon moves with it too. Assuming the icon format used is compatable with the new windows system version.

TK, not only the embedded "desktop.ini" but also a service in Task Manager :3
