Game turned out to be harder than I thought. I need to look up a walkthrough online for most of the puzzles.

I would NOT reccomend this game for young kids or even pre-teens! There is some serious adult conent in this game, blood, violent themes, and sexual themes too! This is a DARK game! I played it through once and it reminds me of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books I read as a kid only they didn't deal with murder. I tried using a guide to get some other endings but after clicking rapidly to get through all the "blah blah blah" it got old very quickly. The first time through was interesting but I repeat, DO NOT let children play this game, unless of course you want them to have nightmares or ask you why two girls are kissing.

You have defeated your own argument. So, you look for reasons not to download software from OTHER sites, but on this site, said reasons are mean and hateful. After all, this stuff is FREE, so it has to be good, right? Can't somebody hate a game without hating the site itself? I hated Jacks Sokoman, but I didn't hate the site that I got it from. I gave people "reasons not do download it". I wouldn't even call it a complaint - if you read a negative review of a movie, is that a complaint? No, it's reasons not to watch it. It would be a complaint if the reviewer had said that the theater was bad for showing the movie.

I really liked the storyline to this. This game would have been so much better as gee I dunno, anything other than a game?
The puzzles were pretty lame.. and so many times you went for a LONG time without any puzzles at all. Also when you chose who to talk to at a lot of points, it effected nothing in the story. As a game.. VERY lame.. as a story, I liked it.

About the mysterious German word - The cultists are mangling it slightly. They don't speak German. If you want more authentic old German usage, put an S in it - Wolfsriemen. Shows up in several German legends.

I think people might want to start basing their opinions on whether or not the game accomplished what it originally set out to do -- after all, I wouldn't complain about a match-3 game because it doesn't engage me the way a shooter might, y'know? Different expectations for different genres and game types.

Now, this game is actually more along the lines of a visual novel, which is like interactive fiction (think 'choose your own adventure') with a lot of eye candy involved. Looking at it from that perspective - and not the perspective of, say, wanting a more traditional game with points and very high interactivity - this is a REALLY well made game. Caution: not for people with little patience, or those of us looking for a 'normal' game.

Anyway, thanks muchly for this one, GAOTD! :)

Wow i must admit this is one tough game if you haven't played this b4 i am where you have to escape the police and i can't do it no matter what i try. I think ppl are rating this game unjustly and if you would give it a try you might enjoy it .. i for one have never encountered so many different attributes in one game and will definately be keeping it . Ty GGAOTD and Hanako Games we do appreciate the one of a kind game and originality

I totally agree with Paul, #38. The puzzles in this game are just a minor distraction. The story is the entire point of this game and personally I find it refreshing, unusual and engaging. I am rarely at all interested by computer games, and this is one of the few exceptions. There is a pleasingly dark side to the story, and the relationships drawn between the characters are well-written and quite subtle. It is very obviously a game targetted at teenage girls - which is a good thing - but as an adult woman I also find it interesting. The fact that some of the story lines lead to unconventional outcomes makes it all the more praiseworthy in my view, because we don't all run on tram tracks, although many people would obviously prefer that we did. It's great to come across a game that's not targetted at the usual gamers, but instead tries to engage a different type of audience. If there were more plot-driven games like this around, then I suspect the computer game playing community would be a great deal more gender-balanced.

So it's a thumbs up from me. I really enjoyed this game. Many thanks to Hanako Games and to GotD.

I've downloaded this twice, and it installs and activates fine. But like #22, I keep getting an error msg when I try to open the game to play: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to play the game." I haven't uninstalled yet, as I am hoping someone has an answer for this.

Not bad.

While I don't usually play games from that are from the point of view as a fifteen year old girl, that's a minor point and really shouldn't turn anyone away from this game. Yeah, the romance and perfect guy stuff isn't my thing, but this isn't a dating sim and it's not excessive, so I think can get over it. The story started off a bit slow, but it's starting to fall together. I don't know how much more there is to go, but I'm at a point where I would like to know what's going on, so I'm going to try to make my way through the game.

The graphics are nice, both the anime style and the stuff that's more along the lines of illustration. Too bad there's only a choice of windowed or fullscreen 800 X 600. The music is nicely done - though probably not something I'd listen to by itself - and the sound effects are okay. Having the option to have higher quality music was a nice touch. Maybe I will end up listening to the music outside the game, just for that fact alone, even if only once or twice.

A lot of reading to do, which I don't mind. Fortuately, there aren't any oddities stemming from flawed tranlation, as we've seen in previous game offerings. Well..., okay the English makes sense. My German's a bit rusty, so I'm not too sure about everything that's in the game, but I do think there's a mistake with one of the words, and not just the fact that the German word isn't commonly used, if at all; I think there's a better way to tranlate the word, but without knowing the rest of the story, I don't know if it would fit. But that's another matter altogether.

Avoiding the policeman in the park was quite frustrating to get through and the "driving" sequence was one I could have done without, but other than that, the puzzles seem okay. So far. Hopefully I don't have to rely on the internet to find my way through a bunch of puzzles or to look up words.

We'll see.

Sure, the story may not be the most deep, the puzzles aren't overly challenging (based on what I've been through so far) and it might not be able to hold up against some other games. Still, this is a good game and I think it deserves a shot.

I'm back! I've been very busy with a ski vacation, visiting relatives, and school, so this is my first look at the site in a while. I'd write a review, but it's too late for me. Sorry.

>Spitfire/bob/Barbara S/Oscars Grandma

"why are some people soooo ungrateful - you really don’t have anything to do with your time, do you? This is GIVEAWAY OF THE DAY - get it?
It’s free, they’re not asking you for any money. Stop your d*** complaining."

What makes you think that saying that they don't like the game is the only thing that these people have to do with their time? If someone gave you a free plate of dirt, and told you to eat it, you would complain! Oh, sorry, it was free. Eat up.

"Since this game was probably made for young girls/boy’s,i dont see why you adults are bashing it.Instead of hunting for games to play maybe you could go out and find a job.If you had a job you could actually go buy yourself an adult game you’d be happy with.

You mean a pornographic game? I heard that jobless people can't get laid, but...

"It is amazing that just a few days ago people where so upset that they were not getting a game a day. Well now that there is only a game at weekends people are still b****ing about the games that are being offered.
It seems to me that some of you out there are not happy with yourselves so you have to find other things to complain about.

FREE GAMES, OKAY. NO MONEY REQUIRED.

There is many a game I dont like but I just pass it by, no big deal. Go pay if you want.

Oh, by the way, Happy Easter everyone."

Of course, when people pay for games with money, they read good and bad reviews of them, and get a good idea of what they're getting from them. When people pay with their time, how come only good reviews are allowed? It seems a bit one-sided to me.

"Dear GAOTD: Thank you so much for providing us games and programs to try out for free. I’m downloading the game of the day right now. Even though some of the comments say it’s too simple and the graphics could be better, I’m anxious to give it a whirl. Personally, I rather like the games that people tag “for kids” even if its just to use time on a boring lunch break. I don’t like to spend hours or even days working through an interactive mystery… I just don’t have time for it. But something that can occupy me for an hour is very welcomed.

I really miss having games available every day, but I appreciate that you didn’t close this great provision down all together and that you still offer the games once a week.

I seldom make comments, and more and more I am not reading the ones that get posted. They are less valuable than they could be to help evaluate a game because of people who seem to write for no other reason than to see their own posts put up. I’m sure these folks do a lot of complaining in all areas of life, not just on this forum. I do feel sorry for folks who are in the rut of needing to complain and criticize and be negative, for it takes so much to make them happy. What a sad existence.

Again, GAOTD, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the good work you folks do there and for providing FREE, ABSOLUTELY FREE games and other software for us to try out."

Do you really believe that, to complain about one thing, somebody has to complain about everything else? Really, that's the biggest load of drivel that I've ever read. Suppose I went to a movie that I liked, then ate a burger that I hated. Can I complain about the burger without complaining about the movie? According to you, no - I'd have to be "stuck in a rut" to complain about anything at all. Never mind the fact that I couldn't stand the burger. Never mind the fact that I absolutely loved the movie - I have to have the same opinion of both.

Having to constantly criticize others' opinions of a game that you haven't even downloaded must really make for a sad existence.

Well i've played through some of it and unlocked 4 endings..
It was a fairly interesting game with a lot of different ways and puzzles to solve so you can't walk through it fast without thinking. The pictures wee sometimes good and some bad since they were made by different artists. The music was ok but from time to time i just had to click and wouldn't hear anything :/ It would have been a lot better if there were voices when they talk. Another minus is that it was a bit slow and took quite a long time to go through just 1 ending. You also had to translate a lot of german, german runes and some old alchemy symbols which i am safe to say that most people can't, thus making this game seem rather impossible unless you are using a guide(which i had to).

I give it:
Overall 6/10
Graphic 4/10
Music 5/10
Story 7/10
Gameplay 7/10
I can't say it had much depth on the characters though. A game that are only good(imo) if you have an excessive amount of free time and don't have anything to do.

I installed the game on my Vista Business laptop and on my XP SP2, seems to be working fine on both. On installation you can opt for installing about 191 Mb more on top of the obligatory 40.5 Mb if you want nicer sounds. I tried both options and think 40.5 Mb are enough.
I love adventure/puzzle games, not to mention being a book addict ;) So naturally I like this game. I like the idea of following the adventure of a Manga teen, trying out different choices in her stead and see where they get me.
I warn you though. If you mainly like shooting things this game is not for you *grin* However, if you love reading and love adventure-type games, you should try out "Fatal Hearts".

This game is pretty good. I reviewed the demo when it first came out for an independent gaming blog and wanted to buy the full game but I never had the money to buy it. I still plan to buy it when I get the money, but my games sell more poorly than her games, so, she can probably afford to wait a little bit I guess, especially now that it's free.

For those of you who want to skip the story: the story is the entire point of this game. The puzzles alone would be too boring. You should open yourself up to enjoying good stories!

I'm one of those people who, even though I am male, enjoyed things like Sailor Moon and Jem and the Holograms and Care Bears and Rainbow Brite when I was younger and growing up in the 80s and 90s, so the supposedly girly aspects don't bother me. And the story reportedly gets a lot more mature than those cartoons were.

I agree that the graphics and puzzles are not the best things ever, and could probably have used a more polish, but I think they're still acceptable, they aren't awful or so bad you'd make fun of the game for them. The writing is fairly good though, and because I play games primarily for the story it's nice to see a story-focused game on here instead of the typical gameplay-focused games with no story or characters or plot to speak of.

While I normally use this comment page to give my opinion of a game, I feel I must comment on some things that have been said.

I must agree with #25. There IS a difference between an opinion and a complaint. There seem to be some people irritated at people complaining in the comment section, which is funny because they themselves are complaining by doing so. I must admit that I am seeing LESS of the typical "complain about GOTD" remarks, and more remarks which are simply critical of the game itself. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving a negative opinion of the game. For those of you who just don't get it, a negative comment about the game, no matter how negative, is NOT a reflection on GOTD. I am very happy with this game site and the people who run it. Some of the games are lousy. And I don't have to like them simply because they are free, nor do I have to keep my opinion of a game to myself simply because someone else believes that it is wonderful because it is FREE. I think the people who complain about negative game comments are missing the whole point of the "comments" section. We are SUPPOSED to give our opinion of the game.

#17 seems to be of the opinion that if you are searching for games, don't like this game, and give a negative opinion of it, then you are jobless. I am sure that anyone reading THAT remark has a far better opinion of it than what I would like to print here.

Another comment seems to say that people leaving negative comments about games are not happy with themselves.

I guess the only thing that will make these people happy is if we all become mindless drones who love anything that game creators want to throw out at us. And if we don't like it, we better not voice our opinions.

As I said before, I enjoy this game site. And if GOTD wants to post only games for 11-year-olds from now on, then that wouldn't bother me at all. But they want OPINIONS of the games they give away, and I will continue voicing my opinion, as should everyone else, whether good, bad or indifferent. -Dan

Sadly not what I was expecting seeing as GGAOTD was supposedly giving us "New and Exciting offers on the weekends"
Installed this, in ran o-k but the mini games were boring and found myself rushing to click through the text!

Get past the spiders web...Err move the squares around the screen...How boring is that??, Search for stuff in the kitchen...YAWN!

Even un-install was awkward, So twenty thumbs down!

I downloaded the game & installed okay. Went into the options and tried to set it to skip the conversation, saved in options. I cannot get the game to skip the story-line and to to the puzzle. I played for 90 minutes and got to the point where they grabbed the gold credit card.

Is there any way to speed up the game to get at the actual puzzles quicker? I don't mind story-line games but the story takes a very very very long time and seems to 'rest' between lines of dialogue. I'm running Windows XP SP2. I've played other story-line games and haven't run into this problem before. And, unlike #18 I haven't been able to find an alternate download for the walkthrough as an .exe file.

I like puzzle games but there has to be a faster way to get to the puzzles like in Azada or the Dream Day games. Can anyone give me some suggestions, please?

If you like reading the sort of book that turns up in the 'young adult' section of the library, this game is for you. If not, it isn't, and you shouldn't bother downloading it, you'll just be annoyed.

There is a lot of reading. There is a lot of angst. There are vampires. There are very pretty pictures. There are many puzzles to solve. There are many possible characters to have a romantic relationship with. If these things appeal to you, you may love this game.

This is not just another match-3! This is something very different and original.

Some of the puzzles are so easy that I couldn't even figure out their purpose; I had them solved just by playing around with the items, trying to figure out what my objective is. Others are so wickedly obscure (like translating a German phrase which I, in my four years of German class in high school, never encountered; in fact, the "solution" I found online is either not the correct one or a very obscure synonym for the more common noun) that I gave up and looked them up online.

This is not a storyline I'd recommend for young children or even pre-teens, nor is it one that seems as though it would appeal to older teens. The action is frustratingly slow, and the graphics are laughable.

I would not recommend this game to anyone who takes games seriously. If you're the type who enjoys playing terrible games just to make fun of them, then it might be worth considering.

I'm relatively new to GOTD and so far I haven't downloaded any of the offers because I read the comments and most are so negative that it scares me to even try them! I, too, wish there was a better way to rate the giveaways so as not to scare people off. I'm not a computer newbie but the thought of downloading, having fatal error messages, games/programs not working, uninstalling, and other things I've read keeps me from taking that leap of faith.

Ya the graphics are old and in the beginning it seems like it is for a young teen... beware... It wouldn't be something I would want my young teen daughter playing, (my son wouldn't touch this game). Anyway, I actually enjoyed the minigames... the story line is hokey, but I enjoyed myself. At the end of the game, it said 1 of 14 endings. I started playing it again... and it's not different enough to want to play again. Thanks for an entertaining morning. :)

Thanks for this. It is great to have a variety of things on the computer when my sister's kids come over for them play. It's difficult for adults without children to entertain for an entire evening/day/weekend without boring the snot out of them - the youngest is 7 and the eldest is 13, so this is great for them since there are 3 girls.

Cheers!

Install and activation went smoothly.

If you're into RPGs or action games, this game isn't for you. It's a plot driven adventure/puzzle game.

I have played a demo of this game before and while intriguing, I got stuck on something and my demo ended and decided to use my game credit on BFG to purchase something else. Going to try playing this again.

My initial thoughts were that it's a great little casual adventure/puzzle game and fairly family friendly (parents will want to review first of course). The great thing about casual games is that you can play for a few minutes or an hour and then put it down until tomorrow.

While the graphics may not be spectacular, that is the style that the developers were clearly going for. If the graphics were higher resolution it would make the game a lot less portable and I'm sure complaints would ensue about the size of download and installation.

Anyway, thanks for the great offer GOTD and keep up the good work! :)

Yea! I probably have every Adventure game made since Myst. So I am very interested in this genre. The 11 year old mentality doesn't scare me away from this game as I have watched the TV show "are you smarter than a 5th grader".
However, for all the barbs being tossed in the Comment Section: there is a fine line between an Opinion a Comment and a Complaint and that very well may be in the eye of the beholder. Either way I thought the purpose of the comment section was for developers to get a better feel of who the buyers are.... ergo... less match 3's (my personal fav) and more shoot'em up - so with their "thick skins" they filter through the personal venting and simply take it as a yea or nay. This is an Opinion, not a complaint.... So don't Spit any fire at me for following the request of GAOTD to let them know my opinion.
No matter my personal disappointment at not finding the right game for me every visit, I do continue to visit, I do appreciate all the time and effort it takes to maintain this site and I do feel I should be able to leave my comment without the fear of being attacked by the self appointed protectors of GAOTD.

This is a really good game! The characters are likeable, the story is engaging and the puzzles are a good mixture of easy to hard.

As for it being a kids' game though, it depends on the kid. It is a dark and romantic tale.

I tried the game. I try all the games. Its not for an adult.
It starts with a young girl talking about not being able to use makeup and having a boyfriend. Then complaining about her mother. I heard that stuff for years from my daughters. I didn't need to hear it in a computer game. That few seconds was all I could take.
NOW if the girl was Suzy super and she was complaining because her mother wouldn't let her get a new rocket launcher and her arch enemy was on the way then I may have played a bit further.

I tried 3x to download and kept getting a fatal error whenever I tried to play. I give up on this one.

You mean the rating system isn't a popularity contest? /sarcasm
I think it's impossible for people on the internet to vote objectively about something.

Dear GAOTD: Thank you so much for providing us games and programs to try out for free. I'm downloading the game of the day right now. Even though some of the comments say it's too simple and the graphics could be better, I'm anxious to give it a whirl. Personally, I rather like the games that people tag "for kids" even if its just to use time on a boring lunch break. I don't like to spend hours or even days working through an interactive mystery... I just don't have time for it. But something that can occupy me for an hour is very welcomed.

I really miss having games available every day, but I appreciate that you didn't close this great provision down all together and that you still offer the games once a week.

I seldom make comments, and more and more I am not reading the ones that get posted. They are less valuable than they could be to help evaluate a game because of people who seem to write for no other reason than to see their own posts put up. I'm sure these folks do a lot of complaining in all areas of life, not just on this forum. I do feel sorry for folks who are in the rut of needing to complain and criticize and be negative, for it takes so much to make them happy. What a sad existence.

Again, GAOTD, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the good work you folks do there and for providing FREE, ABSOLUTELY FREE games and other software for us to try out.

It is amazing that just a few days ago people where so upset that they were not getting a game a day. Well now that there is only a game at weekends people are still bitching about the games that are being offered.
It seems to me that some of you out there are not happy with yourselves so you have to find other things to complain about.

FREE GAMES, OKAY. NO MONEY REQUIRED.

There is many a game I dont like but I just pass it by, no big deal. Go pay if you want.

Oh, by the way, Happy Easter everyone.

I'm an adventure game lover, so my curiosity is whetted by this title. The reviews I've sought out whilst (currently) downloading on dial-up do seem to be mainly favourable.

Quite a few reviewers warn that some of the puzzles are VERY hard indeed. Although I try to steer clear of walkthroughs and cheats, just about every adventure game I've played (and that's a lot) tend to introduce at least one particularly difficult puzzle somewhere en route, where a selective reference to a walkthrough can often save hours of frustration.

Hanako have published a Fatal Hearts Walkthrough which might prove to be a valuable guide for those new to the adventure game genre. It includes directions for all the puzzles, with pictures, plus the skip codes to bypass them. There are also explanations of how to reach the different endings and some bonus pictures. Unfortunately, this guide is located on a secret Hanako members-only forum, so it's only available to registered users. However, I did find a link to an alternative download :) The file I downloaded appears to be the (same?) official walkthrough guide. It's a 5.5MB exe file, which installs a very comprehensive HTML based guide to all aspects of the game. Well worth downloading IMO... but I've decided not to post a link here, in case the alternative download violates the developer's copyright conditions?

I'm obviously unable to comment on this game yet, as I'm still waiting for my download to complete. But I notice a couple of comments above are recommending this title without reservation for the youngsters. It might be worth reflecting on the comments I found Here which state that:

It's worth mentioning that parents might want to review the game themselves before giving it to their young teens, since there are some elements that people might find questionable. For example, a couple of the endings involve a romance between the two female protagonists, while others have the teenage girl marrying a much older man. There is also murder and supernatural elements involved in all storylines. Nothing is explicit or graphic, but the stories are there. As an adult, I thought it was a bold move for a casual game, and preferred the more mature elements to game play. It's a judgement call if you are a parent or sensitive gamer.

Not really to my taste but for my 9 year old nieces (they're twins) this is great - anything which gets them using the pc more can only be good in my brother's and mine opinions. Getting my 11 year old nephew off the pc is also difficult -- I'll threaten to make him play such a "girlie" game!

Win XP, SP2
I've played two chapters and the game is just TOO SLOW. I got so tired of waiting for each text block to spell itself out one...letter ...at ...a ...time. THEN, I discovered that I could press the space bar as soon as text started and it would give me the whole text block at once! What a relief! I hope this helps some of you.

As others have noted, it is a game best suited for pre- and early teen girls. Apparently designed to teach a bit of morality with the game. As you play, (mostly read) you are asked questions and must make choices which direct the branching of the game flow, resulting in quite a number of possible endings to the game.

The story/reading is already getting boring and I may never see an ending. It just does not move fast enough and the mini puzzles that pop up here and there are too few and far between - and relatively easy to solve so far.

Not the best game I've seen.

Activation & Extraction: The activation and extraction are all in one Setup file. After extraction, it is about 250 mb if you choose to extract the extra sounds and stuff. If not, it is around 40 or so mb.

Gameplay: This is what I like to call a read-through game. Basically, you read a lot of text, and, every now and then, play a little minigame of some sort. You play as a young girl named Christina. Her best friend is Lucy and they hang out a lot in the beginning. I haven't played much of it, and I won't be playing a lot more of it. Sometimes, you get to choose what you want to do. Other times, you play a little minigame. To be honest, this game doesn't appeal to me at all.

Graphics: This is pretty much you staring at a picture of the person or people that are talking. If the text you're reading sounds like the person is sad, you'll see a picture of the person sad. It is the same with other emotions. It is 2D style pictures. It's like watching a cartoon/anime, but with no movement. In other words, they are static pictures.

Music: The music is alright, though I would rather have another style of music. That may just be me and my liking of rock music talking, but I kinda wish they would put a little more better music.

Recommended to: Girls in the preteens (10-12 years old).

What I Recommend: Personally, I like the Phoenix Wright series on the Nintendo DS. Basically, you are lawyer who solves (mainly) murder cases. This is a good game with a very interesting storyline. The sprites are actually animated and they actually blink, unlike this game. It is a read-through game.

Conclusion: I personally dislike this game because the storyline isn't that interesting. That is just one opinion out of about 6.6 billion other opinions (assuming everyone else in the world knows about this game).

The Vertict: Two Thumbs Down, 1.5/5, 3/10.

This is the type of game I used to write 40 years ago... before graphics were available and games were simply text. As #4 said, "The graphics are done in a cute, Japanese Anime style." and while the characters are supposed to be 15 1/2, as #3 said it will probably appeal most to 11 or 12 year old girls.

Throughout the game you are offered choices... and the choices you make determine the outcome. If you're into "shoot em up" games or high speed action, this game is not for you. As a great-grandfather, I can see an educational advantage to this game, because a lot of reading is required to play the game.

The game has so many different twists and turns (depending on your choices) that in two hours of playing, I didn't even scratch the surface and only got to chapter 3.

When you install, the game is 40MB, if you choose the option to expand the sound for better game play, it will jump to 213MB!

TO GAOTD: For those of us who appreciate GAOTD and use the ratings to decide whether to download or not a giveaway that we feel we need to download. However, it seems that the ratings are not reflective of the worth of the giveaway in terms of usability, stability, etc. Is it possible for GAOTD to ask raters to qualify their ratings? Say, instead of a thumbs down, ask raters to say whether they will not download the giveaway, the application crashes, etc. That way, it will be easy for other potential users to make the decision on whether to download it or not. After all, not everyone has the luxury of testing a software.
