Thanks GAOTD first of all. I like the EXTRA, it is receptive to comments and will respond to questions. One time they even gave away an additional title to people who left comments on GAOTD. In my book, that’s going the extra mile. They deserve our support. Do this time still have this preferential activity?

Thanks for the info. Since this is a phone format I will not need to download this because my movie player is on a ppc also known as a pda, not a phone.
Thanks everybody and gotd for the programs and the help.

I downloaded it and will try it along FormatFactory which some suggest. Doesn't hurt to try both. Some are saying that FormatFactory is better. FormatFactory did add during the install an icon for ebay on the Desktop and an executable in C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Desktop. I removed both icon and ebay.exe executable and the FormatFactory program seems to be working fine. I'll keep the better program after trying them.

The developers make a big deal out of there being "no loss of quality." Correct if I'm wrong, but this is not possible, nor do you need (or want) such a huge file on a mobile device. Furthermore, Format Factory is free and it will convert ANY format to ANY format. Format Factory is the only software, free or otherwise, that was able to convert my old 3GP files to other formats. Todays Giveaway only performs one function.

It's free today but I still won't bother cluttering my computer since there is such outstanding freeware available that does more than one type of conversion, and I'd certainly never pay for this.

#10: "it freeze once I lunch it. I used the wondershare dvd ripper on the same system which I got from GAOTD a few days ago, it works pretty well. What’s the reason?"

A couple of guesses, but I wanted to post this one because it might be useful to a lot of folks thinking about moving to win7...

Simplified, Windows traditionally displayed video using something called a hardware overlay. Vista changed things, breaking plenty of video apps & initially hardware like TV cards. Win7 appears to take a step backward & re-introduce some of the methods used in XP, combined with Vista's video display methods or architecture. This hybrid approach isn't all that documented yet, so you're likely to see very mixed results with video until the coders figure everything out. Some older apps & code may work well again, after refusing to behave in Vista, while some Vista code work-a-rounds may break.

* * *
On win7 itself, be aware while the RC end date is summer 2010 (when it stops working), it's been published that in March it'll start working for only 2 hours at a time. If you haven't yet tried it, it doesn't replace XP completely -- some versions will come with a virtual copy of XP to help overcome this limitation. And for many folks it won't immediately offer much if any perceived benefit over Vista -- it depends on what you use your PC running Vista for. Hardware requirements are a bit stiffer -- in particular you'll want/need more RAM -- & like Vista, multi-core CPUs work much better... XP will still be around for a couple of years for Netbooks etc because they don't meet that semi-requirement.

Hi Scanner,

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments, but you seem to have got the wrong end of the stick. All the games found in the synopsis, and the games I post are already free, or abandonware.

Personally I purchase most of my games; spending in the region of at least $50 or more a week.

DRM is destroying the gaming world in my opinion. I have games that I paid good money for (such as Battlefield 2142, that I can no longer access because I changed my Email addy and can't log on. the developers are only interested in cash and no support.

The developers of Extra DVD to 3GP Ripper offer different versions of their video conversion programs -- today's GOTD offer only allows you to output to one of several 3GP profiles, used mainly for cell phones... the Howardforums is one place to look to see just what size video your cell plays, & what format etc. In fact if you're in the US you might want to check them 1st, because your carrier may have disabled viewing video you don't download from the carrier itself.

Extra DVD to 3GP Ripper uses Xvid to encode video, & appears to "rip" DVDs by taking snapshots of the playing video rather than accessing the DVD's internal mpg2... in practice this doesn't seem to really effect quality noticeably *When* you're going to such tiny frame sizes. It includes a slightly older version of Xvid, along with the basic code libraries for Real (i.e. Real Producer). It also uses ffmpeg, like so many other converters, and comes with an older version of the lame MP3 encoder, taking up ~26 MB with 122 files in 7 folders. The 3 Xvid files go into the System32 folder of Windows, & take up less than 1 MB.

Alternatives... There are loads of apps you might use to convert video from 1 format to another, & many/most of these programs only do one part of the conversion. You can mix & match on your own, or several front ends have emerged that very basically act like one big macro, taking your input & running whatever separate programs for you. Their chief advantage is it's easier than taking every separate step yourself. The program, Format Factory, that's always mentioned favorably fits into this class (Super's another), & you can find more at videohelp.com & doom9.org.

What sets programs like Extra DVD to 3GP Ripper & DVDFab (arguably the most popular ripper) apart is their DVD ripping, getting around DRM. DVDFab (& yes, they have a free version) takes a more technical approach, tracing through the DVD's programming, while today's GOTD just needs to play it.

Thanks to gaotd, we can test various softwares free and choose the one we like most for our use. Please don't put down vendors who offer their products unnecessarily - our honest reviews may help them improve the product.
I also like when readers offer suggestions about equivalent free programs.

If it helps, 3GP is a variety of the H263/H264 type formats, & there are a couple of versions. Quicktime is one of the few players that can handle it, & one place to find info on what your cell plays, & how to play it is Howardforums... some play one of the 3GP versions -- some don't. As cell LCDs come in different shapes & sizes, you may have to crop or letterbox video to try & get it to fill the screen.

#2.. Thats just the ways it is in here. I agree, but it is still just the way it is...

#4... never assume you are the first, while you are typing others are submitting.

There are times when you DO NOT NEED to download and try a GAOTD to know that even if it works, is not worth the download due to limited use.

Ever since I first heard of Format Factory IN HERE, I have stopped using all my other paid for converters. It is free, it is great software that works well.

#10 has a point. I too have just went to all Win7 RC on all 6 of my computers. You software venders better pay attention as in my opinion Windows 7 will be the predominate OS within a year of release as it is GREAT!!! What Vista should have been...

Thats just one old mans opinion however, your milage may vary.

There are free DVD ripping alternatives and converters that do the same and more than todays offer. It is a thumbs down for me.

Has anyone had any experience using and/or viewing this format?
What is mobile 3gp? I am wondering because I have never heard of this format. Can anyone please explain?
It says you can make a movie any size. Does this mean a 1 gb to 800 mb movie can be delibirtley shrunk to 200 to 300? Also will it still be watchable? Any help understanding this will be appreciated.

Quick Media Converter is a converter program that I would highly recommend. If you visit Cocoon Software, you will see why. Here are some features about QMC that I copied from their website:

New PSP compatible format works with old and new firmware.
-h264 4:3 and 16:9 (new firmware)
-XVID 4:3 and 16:9 (Old firmware)
-Automatically imports in the PSP's memory card .

New Audio formats :
-OGG
-zune
New Video Formats :
-Zune
-SWF
-MKV
-DPG ( Nintendo DS) 4:3 /16:9
-H264 Qt Redim
-Removed Divx 4 :3 ->16 :9
-Divx are formatted to support Home DVD players edition 4 and Virtualdub

-removed Xvid 4 :3 ->16 :9
-Divx are formated to support Home DVD players edition 4
-WMV : Ms compatible format 4 :3 redimensionned to 320x240 to support almost all formats
-Errors corrected in encoding Xbox and Ps3 in HD

Several other code improvement were made such as better quality output for flv.

SWF Mkv and Zune conversions will now be supported in easy mode and expert mode.

Error codes will include more detailled information about the probable cause of conversion failure in order to improve and accelerate the support forum resolution process.

#7 as a game programmer sharing games that people haven't purchased screws us. Obviously we make money selling games, but its our job. In some cases there are companies that are ok with what you are doing after they recoup their initial investments, but seriously... its no better then stealing no matter how you word it...Then you guys complain when we put DRM in all our crap. There are games that are free, play those or buy the one's that aren't free. Most of the old games can be picked up for less then 10 dollars.

#2 Yes people give programs a thumbs down or up based on if they can use it or not. This actually gives a company an idea if what they've created is in fact something needed by the masses. To have a thumbs up or down based on the fact of actual use won't give them this information. So if you see a lot of thumbs down on any program it more than likely means the programs entire conception isn't what the masses are after, or the company failed to describe all of the programs advantages. I have no use for a program such as offered today and I highly doubt I'll ever need one like it.

The Good
* Simple and easy to use.
* Not too bad on computer resources.
* Allows you to choose from multiple different "profiles" for output 3GP video.
* Can by-pass DRM protection (for legal backups only of course ^_-).
* You can pick and choose which part of the DVD to "record".
* Good output quality.
* Decent conversion speed.

The Bad
* Needs a third party program to assist it in playing region locked DVDs.
* DVD aspect ratios are not carried over.
* "Fast forwarding" past the titles doesn't work properly for me.
* I get an error whenever trying to record "from beginning to end".

Free Alternatives

Unfortunately there's no game giveaway again this weekend so I've posted a few games to help those that are game addicts along the way. I've departed from my usual practice of including singleplayer only games and decided to post a couple of multiplayer games as well as a few single player ones. Most of you will be familair with one because it's been given away previously.

The 2 singleplayer games are a platform game called Alice & the Golden Coins, and a top down 2D shooter called Alphasix. The multiplayer games are SAGA a fully persistent MMO RTS (Massive Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy) and Starsiege Tribes another MMO RTS game. You can find download links via the games discussion forums. You don't need an account to use the forums (unless you want to post a comment):

Go to Games Discussion forums for free games

also for those that are new to the giveaway project theres around 600 free games accessible from the games synopsis thad:

Go to Games Synopsis to find around 600 free games

You can already rip to 3gp with the extra dvd ripper, included in dvd copy rip giveaway 8th March 2009, and many more formats besides. I don't see the point of this software.

Additionally, I don't need 3gp, my blackberry uses .avi, .mp3 files.
