Hi Minesh: I'm having the same problem, it seems that the file licence.dat that came with the expense tracker needs to be moved and replace the one that is there. I have no idea what I'm talking about, just repeating what was told to me. I've been trying to figure this out all week. Go through the files above and they will tell you alot. If you're still having problems, go to the Forums, I've started a post named Licence.dat and there is some great help there. I only hope and pray that they offer this program again soon, as its a wonderful program and I already love it, just don't love the '30 day trial version' that pops up.. lol

The Registration key is in the Licence.dat file that comes with the set up file but it could not be opened at all and the installed software remains a trial version. Installation should be a simple one for a computer illiterate like me.

Appears to be a useful application. You can do what is offered in Excel, however, Excel costs more.

Easily configurable, but initial setup (creating/editing the labels etc), can take a considerable amount of time. Would have liked some additional language files (multilingual community).

Getting the license file in the correct location proved to be a challenge on Vista Ultimate, but once in place, everything works. A license import or placing the license in the program directory, would have been better, since locating the right directory can take time.

For all those having trouble finding the folder for the license - your application data folder may be hidden. This can be fixed by:
winKey + E -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Show Hidden Folders

Good luck!

#45: This site is a great way to get a product out there - I venture that almost all of this sites users would not go to a Warez site if paid to do so, and would pay for the software for a second computer / after a crash / et al. (myself included)
But more importantly, when a friend comes over and sees the programs I use, or I mention it in conversation, or print a report from it, it surely does generate sales.

As far as requiring .NET, its taboo, and pushes away the many users who can't get .NET. (popular adware such as babylon does something to the machine that prevents .NET from installing afterwards, and most users don't know how to fix that. Besides, .net is heavy!)

As far as today's giveaway, after reading the comments, I do not understand the poor ratings on top. But still haven't tried the software myself so here goes.

GOATD, thanks!

I could not get the software to register on my Vista and I installed license.dat in all the correct and wrong suggested file folders.

It remains a 30 day trial.

Unless there is a remedy, it gets uninstalled tomorrow!

Doesn't work well with DOS 2.0 and the charts don't look good on my monochrome monitor. Besides, all computers provide tools to do the same thing. Also, other freeware does an even better job than this one and I use them all.

Have I covered them all?

Now everyone can post on the actual program and stop complaining :sigh:

This program categorizes the transactions in odd subjects. "Things" being one of the listings. There is no option for savings ect.
There are various skins to choose from.
There is a pie chart and a line graph to track your investments and expenses.
I give this program a 5 out of 10
cheers,
jas

It installed just fine per your instructions for Vista, but this is driving me absolutely nuts. I'm pretty computer savvy, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to add any figures to any of the categories. The help file is a real joke. No instructions whatever, so I'm probably going to uninstall it, since I've been messing with it for hours and can't figure it out.

Hi Buzz123 comment #54, yeah you're right, the post is off topic, but not being on the staff, I am unable to post details about the free games elsewhere. Thanks for understanding, lol. :)

Anyway, to game lovers around the world, I've now posted details of Tuesday’s free game over in the forums. The game is called Ocular In, an very unusual game, that I think is well worth trying. You’ll either love it or hate it. For a freeware game it’s very well made. You can download it by following the link below:

hate it if you want to, i could care less but I, to a certain extent agree with #45. This is junk! Most have been junk for to long. Games are junk & there wasn't one for Sunday.
If anyone thinks I'm going to fumble around entering some reg file I a hidden folder, their insane! Keep your Chinese & Russian garbage & I'll keep my private info, private!
Worse yet, to think I'd shell out one red cent for an app of this type their worse of then I'd expected. If the arbitrator doesn't like it like I'd expect, don't post it! It wouldn't be the first time.

I love the daily offerings. When the site first started, I downloaded nearly everything, some of which I never used. I am now more selective and use this forum as a guage as to whether or not I will take the time to download and test it. Thanks for the descriptions of what the software does and the lessons learned while trying to install. Thumbs down to those who just poo poo the application without trying it out.

Lenny B comment #45. speak for yourself. I've bought quite a few programs thanks to the giveaway project. Just because you don't get what 'you' want for months doesn't mean you have to slam the site by saying it's going downhill. The site has now been going for almost 2 years. That's over 700 software titles (okay we've had loads of repeats - and Ive not counted the games that have been given away).

Personally I use this site to try out software. I'm no kiver. I work hard for my cash. I don't want to be buying software on the basis of a tie limited demo. The way the giveaway programs work, it's like getting an unlimited demo. Which is perfect for trying out the software. It gives you plenty of time to put the software through it's paces, then to decide whether to buy or not. I can't be the only person here that thinks that way as there are upwards of 20 000 users coming to this site every day. There's some such as Star burn that I'd not consider buying (nearly $500), but there has been a lot that have been reasonably priced, that are within my price bracket; so, if I find they do the job that I want, I buy them.

And, What on earth do you mean about it being courageous using a warez site? Surely it's better to be legal that ripping off these software developers; who have to make a living just like you and me.

Thank you so very very much GOTD!!!! This is Wonderful! ...although its working fine and I haven't 'The license file (License.dat) should be copied to the application data folder of all users.' and the program 'seems' to be working. Will it possibly die on me in a few days when I can't get help any longer?

... and I wanted to thank Wondershare, I had a problem with the "Web to Video Author', I wrote them and they replied back almost immediately with the information requested!

Thanks, I'm so hoppy, hop hop hop...lol

From comments, can't really tell how useful this is going to be. Worth a try.

Would be better if U3 flash program.

Seems difficult to keep in sync otherwise. Just keep the receipts and enter into Quicken once a week seems simpler than booting up the computer to enter in that 1.79 coffee and .50 newspaper.

Thanks to Dung Nguyen. I had put the licence everywhere I found Expense Tracker but no go. Hadn't thought og program Data. Duh! I am a dummy some times. Thanks GAOTD. Just the program I needed to keep track of the hole in my pocket. Almost makes up for missing out on the second release of PDF to Word due to not being informed on this site that the original download was faulty which was why it was withdrawn and I hadn't had the spare time to check it out till it was too late.

Con: Can't import data from credit card statements/records
No reference for how $$ were paid (credit card, online)
No check number reference (sortable)

Installed this then spent 2.5 hours trying to get it to register. (Followed instructions to the letter) Program WILL NOT register. Un-installed ok.

If the publisher cannot get a simple thing like a registration file to work properly, why should I beleive that they can get something vastly more complicated to work.

Imagine that I work for 1.4376 dollars per hour (an example!).
Today I've done 5 hours: is there a simplier way to insert these 5 hours in this software than calculating, every time, 5*1.4376?
I mean: is there a way to register, for the incomes of a fixed category, the number of hours and then let the software do the multiplication for a fixed hourly salary?
thanks

I was looking for something like this for a while now and recently downloaded a bunch of applications. Some I tested, some I haven't yet. Whilst there is a bunch of them available, almost none useful are freeware and if they look pretty awful. The others charge way too much ($ 29.99 and up). Before spending $ 30, I'd rather buy Quicken or something like that. Hadn't come across gnucash before, but you kind of need an accunting course for that (50MB download).

All I really want is an easy way to track my expenses and have an overview of what's in my wallet, what's on my debit cards at any given moment (. But: it should have categories plus sub-categories (say Food: Groceries, Dining Out), multi-currency (my cash is in one currency, cards in another), run from a USB stick (great for travelling, which I will do next week, adding yet another currency), export to xls for further analysis.

Evidently this offering does some, but not the rest. Also, it takes forever to start.
Perhaps, Fubar, you can post your alternatives ...
Pura vida, AlexSJ

Well, I’ve asked the same question just a few days ago – does anybody know more about the company which offers this software? Like country location, nationality, a real mailing address, phone numbers and so on…
Many of the programs take your personal info ( here-your money habits, for example…) or get access to your PC and can do whatever they want with it…I’d really feel a bit more comfortable to have more info for the company which offers these “free programs”, so I can decide to trust it or not with my personal information (not that I’m keeping so big secrets, but…keeping in mind what’s going on these days…).
Even if you check “About Us” on the company web site (Indentix) – you can’t get more info about “them”, just general words…”FAQ” – too, nothing more specific about who they are…

About Us
Indentix focuses on the development for the .NET platform. Our mission is to provide top quality products. We combine the high-level skills and wide experience of our technical professionals with the efficient approach to the market.

Call me paranoid or suspicious but - why should I trust (with my personal info) someone who doesn’t trust me to provide a real address or telephone number?
And, at the end (sorry, if I waisted your time!) – I’m not downloading any “free” programs ( esspecialy ones that can take any info about me ) IF there is no a little more info about “them”, sorry CAOTD, nothing against you, just the opposite – thank you for your effort to keep all of us happy here.

To #45: I can't respond to your first two paragraphs because I have no idea what you said. As for your not finding anything useful here for months, well many others have. It might surprise you to learn that this site was not designed for you alone. I have not seen anything "unsuitable for personal use" but apparently you consider only games to be of any value.

I'm sure I am not alone but will speak only for myself as to purchasing products I've downloaded from GOTD. I have a list of "keepers" that I would purchase immediately if I should ever lose the registrations. I watch other websites for discounts on my favorites and purchase them when the opportunity presents itself. Recently I was very disappointed to have missed the opportunity to purchase Macrium Reflect from BitsDuJour. Also, since I usually check out the developer's website if I am even vaguely interested in their product, I sometimes find another program there that I end up purchasing. I acquired NoteZilla that way. Family and friends are advised when I've found a treasure. Also, whenever I have the opportunity to leave a positive comment on another website regarding a program that I downloaded here, I do so.

Using Windows XP SP3, copied provided licence as instructed.
When launching program its process stays resident in memory but no interface of any kind is displayed, it just sits there in memory.
When launched for second time, it loads normally but that resident copy from first time suddently appears too. Both old and new instances show Trial Version 30 days left.
It seems this behaviour is caused by (my intentional) blocking of internet access with firewall to it.

Although you can see history of expences, program does not offer functionality to project current budget situation in the future (so you will not be able to see you 'll be broke in future if you continue like this :P )
Apart from that, it does support all kinds of currencies.
Because it is based on Microsoft .NET Framework program feels a little bloated (especially on startup)

Overall thumbs up for usefullnes (albeit it could be better).
