IF you have this working on your system what version of directx and .net do you have?

Most audio software NEED .net 3.5 SP1 and DirectX 9.0c to work. For You who usually don't use audio software shouldn't bother install software like this.

@30 and 42 etc

Since the developer in comment 34 has stated, "We appreciate your comments. We based the software off of Veritner Ipad spinner and TuneLab.", it will be interesting for you to know what TuneLab Piano Tuner's developer, Real-Time Specialties, Inc, thinks. Users may not know that TuneLab is aimed at the professional piano tuner and sells for the appropriate professional level price. It is well worth the price too (if you are familiar with how the profession works) and is the world's leading software used by professional piano tuners worldwide.

This is posted for the public record.

Theft of intellectual property is not to be taken lightly and such blatant, admitted, fraud and theft cannot be tolerated in the retail market, nor even for personal use.

Beyond this I cannot comment more as it will be a matter for the courts. However, it is now a matter of record and I would expect Giveaway of the Day to not host any further submissions from Sly Software Solutions until this matter is resolved.

Give away of the day is definitely a great website with good people and great customers who give invaluable insight to those trying to promote their wares. However, this will go down as a definite black mark. Time for a little insight. I look forward to the many free programs I will download in the future, free of the inadequacies of this listless program.

This software is much too difficult to install, for something that's not much more than a toy. I thought it might be interesting to play around with, but it's not worth the trouble. My PC is only one year old and it's a mid-level HP machine, running Windows 7. I get the same error that other people have reported, seeing lines of code on the screen during the installation process, whic means a great big 'FAIL!"

Things like this almost never happen with the offers provided by GAOTD, and I've downloaded and used quite a few. Try again sometime, Sly Software.

The free Tunelab 97, which I've used for a decade on a Kohler and Campbell Spinet and my Kawai GM-10 Baby Grand, is a little better but I'll use this as a double-check. Thanks for EasyTune. It installed, self-activated, and apparently runs fine on my Win 8 HP Pavilion g7 laptop: I did a quick check at my piano.

For those who haven't tuned their piano before, there are cheap kits with a wrench to tighten or loosen the strings (always loosen them a little first when adjusting) and felts and rubber wedges ("mutes") to deaden the strings on keys with 2-3 strings so you're only tuning one at a time. There are online tutorials that explain the process.

TWO OTHER NOTES:
1) note that each octave on the piano isn't tuned a true octave apart from others: the inharmonicities of the piano require them to be slightly MORE than an octave apart otherwise they don't sound right.

2) those saying guitars don't need to be tuned each time you play them: check your guitars against a tuner, you're sure to find something off a little bit no matter how good your pegs are. I study music in the adult program at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, which is nearly in the same league as the Julliard in New York. The musicians there pick it up when anything's just slightly off tune.

I downloaded it, tried it 200 pages of MSWord gibberish for the user agreement. It ran for 2 key presses and crashed. I don't have the time to screw bout with this stuff. So off the computer it goes.

I sill think there is a shill or 2 posting glowing reviews on this.

#4 - are you a paid shill or what? Anyone who's ever had a piano tuned knows better than what you've posted.

Have you cleaned your keyboard, adjusted your front & back felts, how about your action, have you changed anything there?

There's a heck of a lot more to tuning a piano than just twisting a few knobs to tighten or loosen a string.

That said, I'm downloading and trying this program.
I have 3 pianos in various states of rebuild - I'm doing the work.
IT should be interesting as the last piece of software I looked at was over $500.00

This program may have some use and may be worth having. For tuning pianos it will be of no real use and quite likely end up causing the user to do real harm to the piano. I am a very good piano tuner and have been for 40+ years.

This was another waste of time and who knows what else the program installed on my computer. Before completing installation a window popped up stating to "Read the following important information before continuing" but the text was just a bunch of characters and symbols with no letters. I clicked "Next>" and it appeared to have installed "something" correctly because it said that it was activated successfully. That is until I ran the program. Then it was nothing but errors messages. I'll stick tuning any my pianos the old fashioned way. Thumbs down.

Couldn't download it where I wanted. Then created file for it under Computer/programs. Then it let me down load it to user/programs. Wanted to read "important information dialogue box" that was complete gibberish I couldn't read then didn't provide an opt out. Had to restart computer. It downloaded anyway! Removed it with Revo Uninstaller. Shredded file in Users/Programs but when I go to shred the Computer/program file File I get a message saying it's still running! Next time I'll go with the majority of "Thumbs down". It's a shame. I'm a musician and wanted to try this out but it obviously has some problems. Do bother with it. I'm guessing this thing gets deep inside your computer. My computer is still buzzing. What the hell is this thing?

I have downloaded the application, and While the GUI is almost identical, the code behind is not. Also, the GUI of the new version being released in a few days is different. I apologize if you are having issues.

I think this Program is toooo expensive:

1. About 8 Euros for the lizenz
+
2. A real woodn analog piano (Schimmel or Yamaha) = 6000 Euro
+
3. The handcraft-tools to do the work inside = 75 Euro
+
4. An aditional microphon for my desktop = 25 Euro

Total => 6108 Euro.

That isnt cheap!!

(by the way - just found in GoogleApps for my Android-Tablett ca. 20 tools like this 4 nothing)

If you look in the folder that the application was installed in, you will find a copy of the manual. You will need Direct X 9c (May also work with Direct X 10). As well as .Net Framework 3.5 sp1. I have installed the software on 5 machines, and have had no issues. I am sorry, but I can't find what is causing the problem. The errors everyone has shown, points to either not having the correct Direct X, no mic plugged in, or an issue with the .Net Framework.

I, too, am having exactly the same problem as #13, #16 and others. I have Windows 7 Home Professional with Net Framework versions 2, 3, 3.5 & 4 installed. I have a decent oem microphone on my system but have connected an external one and tested that and it is fine but the problem persists. I find it unbelievable that a software supplier can provide an application with suitable testing and, if the manual is required to be able to get it running, why wasn't it included in the installation? Is the supplier going to provide the solution to all of us having this problem when he has resolved it?

Make sure you have .Net Framework 3.5 installed. The software is not intended to be run on the 4.0 framework alone. The software requirements are a microphone, .Net Framework 3.5 sp1, and Direct X

I will have to pass on todays giveaway, I tune by ear.

@LarryF #30, and everyone else:

You are right. This is a blatant ripoff of UltraTune.
UltraTune is a freeware, open source program licensed under the GPL version 3 license which expressly prohibits incorporating any of it's source code into proprietary programs and requires releasing the modified source code under the same license. Also, he doesn't give credit anywhere to the original author but he changed the original copyright message.

In fact, it's UltraTune version 0.2.3 recompiled, including it's bugs (experienced by many posters above). He even left in the debug information (check the EasyTune.pdb file in the installation directory and this screenshot http://oi48.tinypic.com/35ix3i8.jpg).

In conclusion: Sly Software Solutions is/are a thief trying to sell other's work. 100 thumbs down.

This software SHOULD HAVE scanned your PC and TOLD YOU WHAT YOU NEEDED IN ORDER TO RUN THE SOFTWARE. For me, this means that it is bad programming, but that is me.

All good programmers will see if you need specific software to run their apps without being intrusive. OR, they will tell you what you need BEFORE you install their app.

BEWARE.

I downloaded... I used it to tune my guitar...

It's not bad if you're into "strobe tuners." (I'm not so much... but then again, I still often use a tuning fork and harmonic tuning from there).

I checked it on my piano (that I know is in tune)... it's pretty accurate; although again, the best piano tuners I know use their ear as much as a tuner -

So for what it is, it's alright... and soon I will certainly be using it for a "Ukelin" that I am working on (that's a rough instrument to tune).

So, for a one-trick-pony program, I'll give it a mundane thumbs up.

@23 - You should be able to use this to tune a guitar, as it matched my phone's guitar tuner exactly. Just make sure you are either very close to your computer (if you have one with a built-in mic) or place a mic in the PC's mic jack and place the mic about 6-12 inches (give or take...depends on the mic's gain) away from the body of the guitar. You should be able to tune each string to whatever key you're going for, and it will be pretty accurate. Test it as if tuning by ear.

DirectX, would be nice if told which version is needed for those without DX installation. However since the requirements just state "windows" and windows XP officialy doesn't go above 9.0c I would suspect that this is the version you need. More info at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113/en
directX 9.0c can also be downloaded from http://filehippo.com/download_directx/
for other versions use Windows update

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

As a guitarist, this interests me. It does what it says. The EULA appears to be the whole script of the program:

I have the 'old fashioned' kind of real wood piano. Does this software emit a sound that type of piano can be tuned to?

HA HA HA!

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

As of this writing, at 5:50 EDT, there are 64 thumbs-up votes, 136 thumbs down, 9 positive or neutral comments, 2 negative comments and 0 suggestions for improvement.
I wonder, are people are voting thumbs-down because they're just not interested in the software? It's hard to believe there are so many people that understand what the software is for, have downloaded it and tried it, and voted thumbs-down, but have made so few negative comments and have no suggestions on how to improve it.
