Search and remove duplicate files with no trouble using KMTTECH Duplicate finder tool. With a influential search engine, you can view clone files of any type and decide whether to copy them, move them to a new folder or remove them permanently from folders, drives and media storage.

I had an earlier version, so I thought I'd give version 9 a trial. It is *considerably* faster than my previous version and just as straightforward to use. That's importantto me because I can't spend time trawling through tons of (often boring) duplicates, but I will keep coming back and sorting them out in "bite-sized" chunks.

Thanks for this.

Downloaded, installed and registered on Windows 7 laptop with no problems, easy peasy.
Time to check a 100gb external disk took longer than I expected, but the drive contained several thousand images for comparison. I was impressed with the results, few mismatches, though checking was very time consuming. Run time was 1 hour 12 minutes.
It's a keeper for me, thanks to GOTD and to TriSun

Finds the doubles but don't blindly click them gone. Some are same exact size but different videos. I had it set for exact information, not exact names. It was very fast. Thank you very much.

I have done my first test on 1.5 TB of data and was impressed by the speed: less than 1 hour. But the results were wrong: I had several TrueCrypt volumes backups (400 MB) considered as identical by DFFP and it was obviously wrong.

The problem comes from the fact that the default options choose a "Sampling comparison" algorithm (what does it mean?) for files greater that 16 MB. And this algorithm does not work!

I have changed it to "Full comparison", and DFFP seems to give good results it this case. Of course, it needs much longer time to compare files, as it should do (in order to compare files by content, it seems necessary to read the files!).

Reply   |   Comment by gt13013  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

gt13013,

Yes, your way is right, and you are good at using D2FP now.

"Sampling comparison" means not compare the fully contents, only compare some contents.
You can set the algorithm for big files, and how big.

Hope this helps.

Reply   |   Comment by TriSun Software  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

gt13013, I'm assuming "sampling" means it only looks at parts of the file and so will lead to false positives on some files with small differences (which I have seen). Many thanks for the most useful/important comment here, which I hope you don't mind me calling to the attention of everyone talking about false positives below.

I tried to use the suggestion box above but it was wonky so here are my suggestions for the developer:

1) When I select a folder to scan, then expand it, all the subfolders should then be checked off as well. That way I could deselect a few instead of having to select many. Right now, if there are 60 subfolders and I want to scan all but 5 of them, that's a lot of clicks!

2) A pause function would be nice to have. I know people have said they find it very fast and light, but I did notice a performance hit that made me have to kill the scan til I can allocate more resources to it.

I apologize for posting before I can complete a scan and review the functionality. If I don't have a chance to do that before the giveaway period is over, I still wanted to offer those suggestions.

FWIW, I downloaded and installed without any difficulty, and having never used this type of program before was pretty impressed at how quickly it identified a huge number of duplicates. I have checked about 300 files from a couple of Document folders and all have been accurate so far, I have not checked my various photo files yet, so can't comment on those. I was shocked at how many duplicates I have.

At home we have WinUtilities on our PCs, and it includes a duplicate finder with lots of choices for how, where, & what to search. Just wondering if anyone can offer a comparison of the two programs WinUtilities and today's Duplicate File Finder Plus 9.0?

If so, D2FP is a module of WinExt.

A significant version number leap from v4.0 of last year's GiveAway. This version overwrites that. Note it's a 32-bit program and doesn't install a 64-bit version for those running x64 o/ses. It has some nice and quite well thought out quick options, like choosing file sizes and types to consider. The use of English isn't great but it's understandable and that's fine.
It took a fair time to do the comparison but I was pleased with the results.

Okay, I'm afraid I take the positive comments back, somewhat, as I found a false positive quite easily (two files I knew were different). They are two 1GB files though. I'd have been annoyed if I'd deleted one...

JohnL,

As gt13013 said.

You can change the algorithm for big files and how big.

To let D2FP do fully comparing for these files.

Hope this helps.

Reply   |   Comment by TriSun Software  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Okay, many thanks to "gt13013" above and I understand now. The default behaviour on files over 16MB is not to fully compare them but just to check some parts of the files. This is in the setup menu (wheel icon, bottom left) and is a crazy default option except to help it do well in benchmarks. If they want to have this then IMHO they either need to ask you during setup or default to the safe option.

So don't delete any file over 16MB it says is identical unless you've changed that option or checked independently!

D/L and installed easily on Win 10 / 64. Ran on a mostly SSD system which took maybe 15 minutes. B/G run didn't seem to affect system performance in any noticeable way.

The resulting list was quite long. I'm unable to review the entire list one by one now but will later. My general impression is that there are few false positives and as promised, the program compares file contents rather than file names.

My take is the program fulfills all its promises although blindly accepting its recommendations w/o a careful file by file manual review if you don't have good backups is, on general principles, rather foolish.

Downloaded and registered fine on a Win XP machine. Ran a scan on a 32g flash drive. It came up with a bunch of dups. I checked one, and it was accurate. I'd moved a folder to a place it shouldn't have been. However, on my machine anyway, there is no way of resizing the main program menu. It goes off the screen in all directions. Almost unusable with it like that. When I had the results window open, the main page was frozen. Couldn't even minimize it. Had to close the results window, after saving it, in order to minimize the main window. I'll try it on a Vista (Ugh!) machine later. Maybe some bug fixes, and it will be better program.

Installed with no issues. I worked with a 14 gb sub folder that I knew well. I tinkered with the preferences to get the general choices I wanted. Then looked carefully at the checked results. Before deleting anything I went back and tinkered with the preferences again and again until the results were what I wanted. I did change about a tenth of the checks simply because of exceptions to the criteria I chose. This isn't tedious if you work folder by folder or even sub folders. I found none of the program errors others have reported. BUT, everyone has different sorts of files and different ways of making choices. I did not attempt to force errors to test break the program. The program was fast even though my test disk is a big old slug.

Installed and registered fine in Windows 10. As file compare goes I thought it was very fast on a 1Terabyte disc. Despite other comments the trial I ran seemed accurate.
I find that much software is installed with duplicate files placed in several sub folders and can only presume that these duplicates are required for the software to run so it would not be a good idea to delete such duplicates. This is not the fault of the duplicate file finder but it will find them and care must be exercised.

Dave,
when it won`t install, it`s your antivirus usually that blocks the installation. Switch it off temporarily whilst installer is running.

Alois, I don't run any antivirus on that computer. I don't mess around with a program that gives me problems when trying to install it. If it doesn't install, I blow it away and consider it an inferior program.

Wish there was a way to prevent it form scanning shortcuts. It detects the same file as a duplicate of itself, just because I have a shortcut to that same folder, and it follows it as if it were a subfolder! :(
(That is a problem with ALL dup finders I tries so far, so an opportunity to differentiate.

Unfortunately I received way too many false results.
Files named completely differently but of the same size were marked as copies while they are not.
Be very careful with this

Reply   |   Comment by Alex  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+30)

Alex, Other file comparison software I use can compare only the file makeup (the file name is not embeded in the file). So if you copy a file and re-name it although they have different names they show up as identical.

Reply   |   Comment by David Murphy  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+12)

Alex, I think what David Murphy is asking and what we would all like to know is - are you sure the contents of these files were different?

Because as David said, the program is looking at what is inside the file not what the file is called.

Be careful when using this software. I've tried different settings and each time I've had some false results. For example ebook chapters which are clearly named differently and of slightly different file sizes all get marked as duplicates. The same photographs saved in portrait and landscape versions and labelled slightly differently get marked as being duplicates.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+44)

Nick H,

Thanks for your feedback.

But that is not true.

D2FP compares file content, 100% accurate.

And you can set the comparing algorithm for big files and how big on the Options interface.

Hope this helps.

Reply   |   Comment by TriSun Software  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-29)

TriSun Software, Why do you say "..that is not true.." when you have no evidence to support your claim? I have saved search results and screen shots that prove what I said. I do not come on here to lie, as your comment infers. I try to give an honest and balanced opinion when I share my comments on this site, sometimes in praise of software, at other times like this one it refers to something that is not so good about the software. Your software does produce false duplicates, as other people have mentioned as well.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+27)

Nick H, As there is a disagreement and it was easy to check. On my PC
The same photographs saved in portrait and landscape versions did not show up as duplicates.
The same photographs saved with different names did show up as duplicates.

So all good for me.

Reply   |   Comment by David Murphy  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

David Murphy, I've tried using this software again and without changing any file names, my filing system or the software settings I've had different results when searching the same folders or drives. The different chapters in the ebook did not get flagged as duplicates again, but other ebooks were marked as duplicates when they have the same author, but are different ebooks. The photos in portrait and landscape views did not get marked as duplicate the second time I tried, but they did for the third scan of that drive! I'll say again that I changed no settings with the software and made no alterations to how the files are named or stored.

I then did comparison scans with AntiTwin from http://www.joerg-rosenthal.com/en/antitwin/

and DuplicateCleaner from http://links.giveawayoftheday.com/s/digitalvolcano.co.uk/%3Fsource%3DDC4F

They both work slightly differently and took longer to complete the same searches, but their results were more accurate, much more so. They both found more duplicate photos than the software on offer here today, genuine duplicates - I found no false results in my ebook collection with either of these other programs.

Thanks for the offer GOTD, but I won't keep this software and won't recommend it to anyone else due to the company implying that my initial comment was a lie. That is poor PR and completely untrue, they have no evidence to back up their statement, I do, so it raises the question, are there any other false claims?!.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Nick H,

For your question:
"
Why do you say "..that is not true.."
"

Because we are the original manufacturer of D2FP.

We wrote the source code, we exactly know we compare file content.

About "evidence", we cannot paste the source code here, and cannot tell you the algorithm here, they are trade secrets. And these involves why it is so fast and accurate. Hope you understand this.

But you can prove it by yourself (please note that the option about the comparing algorithm for big files and how big).

Hope this helps.

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

JohnL, I went through all of the settings prior to searching for duplicates. I saw that the default settings would not check every file so I adjusted them to include everything.

@Maddy thanks for your support and belief in what I said.

@TriSun. Thanks for nothing. There are obviously language and cultural differences here, we are using the world wide web, its to be expected, but your most recent response is outright arrogance. Things can, and do, go wrong with even the best things. I replied that I had different search results in subsequent searches, without altering the search settings. It seems to have been a complete waste of time even bothering to give you and your software a second chance.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Nick H, You misunderstand me, the default is NOT to do a full compare on files over 16MB but just to check some parts of it. You need to change that to avoid the possibility of false positives. See the setup menu (wheel icon, lower left).
