Duplicate Files Deleter helps me a lot when i have an issue like file deleting or renaming the file.

Installed without problem on a WinXP 64 machine and am very pleased with the programme. I really like the fact that it picks up files that are the same but have different names. You have to be aware that there will be some false matches, but since I check the whether I want to delete something beforehand these are pretty easy to spot, checking what the files are is very easy as well so not an issue at all. This amounts to a huge advantage over those programmes that are based on file name matching. Thank you very much for an excellent giveaway.

Downloaded, installed and registered with no problems. Ran my first scan and it took about 20 minutes but then, at the end, it said it was loading the results. I waited for 15 minutes and it kept telling me it was loading the results. I finally quit and just selected a few files instead of the complete HD. It scanned very rapidly but when it was supposed to publish the report it again said it was loading. I waited another 15 minutes but nothing ever happened. I uninstalled the program and downloaded and installed it again. I ran the same two tests described previously with the same results. After the holiday weekend, I will try to use the chat capability for support and see what they say. If they can't help, I'll just uninstall and chalk it up to a bad experience.

I'm kinda curious.. Other than eliminating clutter which of itself is useful, with today's terabytes who really needs to recover valuable space when there's always space to spare? (at least for me).. I'll pass, not because it's a bad deal but because I have this as a secondary option in another program and hardly ever use it. Thanks anyway TriSun & GOTD.

Downloaded and registered without problems on Windows XP SP3 and Win 8.1. Scanned a disc with 160 GB of data (photos, music, installers, aso). The program froze after 4 minutes. Could stop it in task manager. Did a second scan of photo folder only (98 GB). The scan was fast (34 sec) and accurate ans allowed to delete +/- 150 MB of dups. When looking to the results however, I noticed that all the duplicate photos where 100% identical. Will a picture with reduced size be detected as duplicate ? I don' t know and there is no information about the similarity (like in the free program Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder).
So, how to improve the program ? 1. Detect similar pictures and provide similarity info. 2. Change the display color of the duplicates; difference between green and black is not very visible. 3. Allow to open duplicates individually. 4. When saving current results, include files that were selected.
For me, it's double usage with the duplicate file finder included in my JV16 Power Tools, but I' ll keep it for it' s ease of use and speed. Thanks to TssI and GOTD !

I downloaded, opened it & waited for it to do its thing. It did not do a thing. I was careful about what I wanted it to search for (having read the comment about possibly changing settings without your knowledge, etc). Do tell me, how long is it supposed to take to find the files? I've been sitting here for 5 minutes. Granted, I have a lot of stuff on my desktop, but still ------ I'll report back if it doesn't work at all. Sounds like a nice program. We'll see.

From the wording used in the writeup by the developer of the software, I get the feeling that if you should lose the software for some reason you could reinstall it - reinstall it at least on the same computer. One of the phrases that makes me think this might be true is a statement regarding a "lost password" and recovery of same.

Watch out: do NOT check all files that are displayed in groups (colors) in the "duplicate file finder plus result" window because all files with the same content will then be deleted (no files with that content will remain). I had rather seen that when for instance 2 duplicate files are found, only one of the 2 could be selected to be removed.

Ccleaner's dupe finder only lets you select additional copies of a file. When there's only 1 of a group of identicals left unselected, it greys out and becomes unselectable.

however, either I am great at not having dupes or it won't run. clicked the green 'find' button which brings up another window and it just sits there. at the very bottom it says waiting. any clues to what I am doing incorrectly?

I installed and registered the program on a windows 10 computer. with both a system drive and an external 4tb usb3 drive. I checked off those options which would search for files of one meg or more, and all of the standard file types.

The windows that is labeled "Current Progress", shows the program to be "Scanning in" the contents of a subfolder on the C drive. That subfolder has about 300 large pdfs in it. The window remains with that display - there has been no change of where the program appears to be searching. This has been the situation for the 20 minutes since the search started. There is no indication that program has hung, and no indication as to whether the program is actually chugging along.

I will let this continue for another hour or so. It is possible that the program simply has poor status indication.

This follows my earlier comment. After an hour, nothing changed, from what I have previously described, and I had to force a close of the program. I then rebooted and restarted the program. Same results as first time - nothing after four hours. While the program was "active" windows 10 reported that the program was non responsive and the time circle rotated whenever the cursor was placed on the program window. From past experience, with other programs, I have found that the "not responsive" message may only mean that the program is preventing an interrupt and is otherwise functioning normally. I do not think that is the case here. I will uninstall the program. A shame, since I could have used a good duplicate finder.

As is my habit (a good habit to have), I read all the comments concerning this giveaway. I have to say this is the most positive feedback I have seen in well over a month at GOTD! This is a good thing too because I certainly need an app like this. I know I have a lot of duplicates on my hard drive, and they are pretty much scattered in several folders. So this will be a big help in cleaning up and recovering much needed disk space. I have to go out for a bit to get some errands taken care of, and when I return, I will certainly grab this. I do have Glary Utilities, but have been unable to use it for this type of process, mainly because I did not know it had the feature (As one person that posted here has indicated, unless that is something other than the Glary Utilities Registry Cleaner). Will look into that and see what I can find out. However, I definitely plan to grab this one while it is being given away. I will then try it out and report my findings.

I used Revo Uninstaller to remove version 3 of this program (from GOTD back in 2013!). After the program's uninstaller finished, Revo found NO other leftover files to delete. Very rare for a developer to be so thorough and caring for their customers. Thanks TriSun!

This GOTD is one to pass on. I have WIN 7, with 172 GB to be scanned on the C drive. It has failed twice with the "Not Responding" failure. I have Clone File Checker from a previous GOTD (it works great, but it's slow), and had hopes that Duplicate File Finder Plus 4.0 would be faster. Anyway, this will be deleted. Save your time and skip this one!

TSS,
Really love your program but unfortunately it looks like I have found a bug in it.
In searching video files it found two of 2 GB each before deleting one decides to play them, they were not the same.
Tested them in a program on my own that checks for duplicates and checks contents by a hash and they were different.
So it looks like rather than a content check it was done by file size alone.
Would appreciate your comments.

Tata,

For very large file (1GB+), consider the efficiency and possible of duplicate. We do not do the MD5 content comparing currently.

But, we already planned to add an option - if compare MD5 for very large file (1GB+), for the advanced Windows users.

That's our honest saying.

Since the giveaway is lifetime upgrades for 1 PC, I think this note is helpful.

Thank you.

TSS Group.

TSS,
Thank you so much for your reply really appreciate it.
It is very time-consuming to compere contents of very large files (2,08 7,157 klb) in my case and the hash took about 5 min on a powerful computer.

This is by far the best duplicate finder I have found and wonder if an MD5 check should be an option.

I'm amazed! When I saw this giveaway, I thought, "Why would I have duplicate files?" I still tried it, though, because I've been running low on disk space lately. Wow, GBs! I guess I was sloppier when I first got this PC and the free space seemed inexhaustible.

Thanks! : )

Installation and registration went smoothly on Win 10/64-bit.

This program searches very quickly, and I most commend it for that. It did slow down quite a bit for loading the list after it finished searching, but the searching itself was fast.

I really like the way it presents duplicates so that you can know what you're doing when choosing to delete or not.

I would like to suggest, though, that in a future version the size filters be recalibrated. This being 2016, 1 MB is not really a very large file. I have files as big as 28 GB (.mkv), and to be lumped into the same size group as 128 MB is laughable. Now days a picture file can be over 1 MB, a song can be 5-###? MB, and a movie/video file can range from 10 MB (short clip) to multiple GB (full movie as above mkv). Hopefully a future incarnation will add a couple more size groups for searching out really big duplicates.

Overall, this is a really good program and a definite keeper!

Reply   |   Comment by HisSon  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-6)

HisSon, This program does not automatically delete, but instead gives you a list with check boxes so that you can determine what you want to do. If you don't want to delete a file, don't put a check mark in the box and don't hit delete.

Darren, this seems to be a common problem with GAOTD recently. Try turning off your AV before running the setup. You will then get an install window. That worked for me.

Hi Darren. :)

If you are using (one of these antiviruses) avast, avg, Kaspersky, Norton, you could try these possible solutions:
1) put the setup.exe in the whitelist of your antivirus
2) disable the real-time/on-access scanning, just the time to install the software
3) boot windows in safe mode with networking, just the time to install the software

Hope this helps.

I'm on Win10 Home x64. This program would not install normally for me ("failed to launch" error), nor would it install under Windows 7 compatibility mode. I had to install under Windows XP SP3 compatibility. It installs to C:\Program Files (x86)/TSSI/Duplicate File Finder Plus
Took me a second to find where to click, to enter the activation key - it is on the bottom of the screen (ignore the "purchase now' in the upper right hand corner).
Very fast, will keep

xilolee,

I can't for the life of me see why it should be necessary to disable one's anti-virus protection to install a program unless of course you are installing a crack for pirated software, but surely under normal circumstances this should not be required. Would someone be kind enough to explain this to me (in plain English/German)? It only seems to happen with GOTD downloads.

Reply   |   Comment by Dave  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Hi Dave.

The problem is those antiviruses block gaotd setup.exe, which was protected with the themida application against reverse engineering (or at least this is the official explanation by gaotd team and moderators).
This doesn't happen with all the antiviruses.
I don't know why those antiviruses vendors/software house still didn't white-list gaotd setup.exe after many months/years.
This could be an interesting question for those vendors.

Check https://blog.giveawayoftheday.com/gotd-wrapper-is-updated/

Reply   |   Comment by xilolee  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

By the way, hundreds , thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions of users are downloading gaotd software, and their antiviruses are running: there would be more complaints.

In addition, virustotal, metadefender, jotti, virscan, are used by users to check the gaotd software (package, setup.exe and setup.gcd).

Sometimes, you can also use the original setup instead of using the gaotd setup (software given away today is an example).
I used all the webservices and antivirus/antimalware (installed and portable) present on my machine.

Glary Utilities offers a good duplicate file finder as part of its arsenal of utilities. Coincidentally I had *just* finished using it when this giveaway came up. This is slightly faster, but as I had just finished "de-duping" I'm not sure it's a fair comparison!

Kate,
Sadly this is the norm on this site recently, comments being marked down for no reason whatsoever.
Because of this we have lost some of the regular contributors who used to do excellent comments about the software on offer.
They would do a really good testing of the software only to be marked down, so sadly they no longer bothers to comment.

The question asked is "Did you find this comment useful?". I have now selected the "no" option. This is not because of peevishness. This is not because Kate's comment was negative (because it wasn't negative) but because I did not find it useful. Nothing more should be read into it. I would imagine that plenty of people will find this comment to be unhelpful and could very well decide to click on "no" and that is okay.

Jerry,
Before the site became useful for mobile devices, instead of being marked down they would write a comment.
This led to some really interesting discussions and this no longer happens.
Instead we see comments marked down where the contributor has put in an awful lot of effort.
When this happens regularly they no longer contribute.

Frankly you make a very good point, possibly in the question asked should be changed.

I stopped paying attention to the software and comment ratings years ago. They really don't mean a thing. I only pay attention to the written comments themselves and have found all comments to be useful.

At last a decent duplicate file finder; excellent filtering is allowed, where to search, types of file to search for, video, images etc and select the size range of the files.

When the search is completed a list of the duplicates is presented, it gives the file name, the file path, file size, file type and date modified.

If you select a file the options are, move to recycle, delete, open run, open location and properties.

According to the help it finds duplicates by content, rather than just size and name.

This is by far the best duplicate file finder I have found because of its easy use and method of filtering, I will most certainly be keeping this first-rate piece of software.

Just found another great feature; when you select one of the duplicates it is highlighted in dark blue the other duplicates are highlighted in light blue.
See some twit marked my comment down, if you can write why not make a short comment instead.
Possibly you are only willing to press a button, but at least I put some effort in!

Looks like I have found a bug in the program: two very large video files of exactly the same size were marked as duplicates, on opening they were different.
Also did an hash on them which checks the contents of files and they were different, if they had been duplicates it would have been the same.
Looks like they have attempted some quick way of checking content and it failed in this case.
A hash is a very good way of checking but very very slow and in my own duplicate file finder I have been experimenting with different methods but found nothing suitable or accurate enough.
So before deleting some large files possibly best to have a quick look at them.

Downloaded, installed and registered with no problems. No email required for the registration code as it's supplied in the notepad file.

Tested it on a folder where I knew I had a bunch of duplicate files from a recent recovery of an outside drive. This program found multiple duplicates in a matter of seconds in a folder with over 43,000 font files.

Relatively self-explanatory interface and is easy to use.

While this program is useful for finding duplicate files it would be also useful to have a program for finding files that are not duplicate then I can find the files that I have not backed up on my external hard drive.

Brian ,
Try Ztree

Reply   |   Comment by Tata  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Brian , a free tool for that would be Microsoft SyncToy. Of course all File Explorer replacements I know also include this option. An example would be FreeCommander.

Tata, ZTree is no longer free, but costs $30

Brian , Allway Sync has served me well for quite a time. When analysing two or more selected locations (one source folder/disc, the number of destinations is virually unlimite), the software shows the number of files residing in source folder/disc and destination(s) and the number of files non-exitent on the destination(s), as well as the number of files changed and/or deleted. It is highly flexible and allows synchronisation either way with custom filters etc. It is also very fast. I got it free but I am not sure if it is still freeware.

I hope, it is needless to say, I am not linked to the developer, but just a satisfied user willin to answer your querstion.
Cheers, Andy

Just in case folks are looking for other options to compare with this giveaway I personally I recommend two freebies...

https://www.hardcoded.net/dupeguru/ (dupe finder with LOTS of features)

and

https://windirstat.info/ (to get big picture of where all your space has gone)

J H, thanks for the links. The dupeguru developer says Windows is no longer supported, though. He has (perhaps sensibly) not used Windows for over 10 years; it's a great product for the Mac and Linux.

Bert,

The Windows 32 or 64 version is still available at that site.
