For the time being, the best free file dedup program I've found remains Duplicate Cleaner Free. It's powerful, and has an easy to use interface. Its paid-for version offers significant improvements, and the price is right. The publisher is known, it's reputable and it's located in Great Britain.

Be aware that all file deduplicators are not equal, far from it. Main areas to check are :

- Ability to select volumes, folders and files to dedup.
- Ability to detect identical files.
- Ability to select, on the resulting list, the files you're willing to delete, and to move or copy those you want to keep.

That last area is probably the most critical, since deleting of files is involved. Getting it right is not easy as it may seem.

I'd be glad to be challenged with opinions about better software. However, several other programs mentioned here do not compete with Duplicate Cleaner, even in its free version.

I have this program and it works well in finding duplicate files. But I need something more from this type of duplicate file finder program.

What I need is a program that will show relationship with the other files in the directories. It need to help me in the sorting and deleting of duplicate files. Here is what I need from a file finder program. Suppose that I have the following directories with the following files in each directory.

Directory A
File 1
File 2
File 4
File 6

Directory B
File 1
File 2
File 3
File 4
File 5
File 6

Directory C
File 1
File 2
File 7
File 8
File 9

Directory D
File 1
File 2
File 3
File 8
File 9

File 1, 2, 4 & 6 are in Directory A and Directory B, but I needs to know that Directory A is a total subset of Directory B. This will prevent me from deleting any files from Directory B since Directory A files would be more likely to be deleted.

It would also be good if It shows that Directory C and Directory D has some files of Directory B but not all. And that they have other files which are not in Directory B.

Since Directory B, C & D has shared files, I would need to understand if all of these directories should be kept by showing me the all of the directories names quickly. Example would be music albums that has some of the same songs, and I don't mind having duplicate files here because this will keep the albums complete.

This is the next level of Duplicate File Finder programs I am looking for.

After installation, I can't find it! No desktop icon. Nothing in Program Files. Where does it install?

Don't know why, but the email download link email never arrived. I reloaded the page and initiated another email to be sent... that also resulted in no email (and yes I verified the right email was in the field) didn't work.

it still will not let me delete the checked boxes. Went through the list and got the ones i wanted to delete to turn blue and hit the delete button and low and behold they are still there not deleted.

I finally got it register through the link on the bottom of the screen that i could not see. Now when i try and delete the same info it tells me to click button to delete it. Where is the button at?

When you select "Full Comparison" in the Settings, make sure you save this setting by pressing "Save and close" button (at the bottom of the window), otherwise the next time you run this program it will default to the "Sampling comparison".

The usual issues experienced with the GAOTD wrapper meant I couldn't install the GAOTD download.

However, downloading the software direct from the website, and using the GAOTD licence worked.

Simple utility, worked fast enough on my local drives. However, it does NOT support network drives other than mapped shares; it does not allow one to browse a network to select a target folder.

In summary

Pros: for local (direct attached storage) its quite fast, didn't return any false positives - although I have a limited amount of data stored locally. Plenty of options, and the search parameters and options are very tweakable.

Cons: no network access other than mapped drives.

Include Military strength Shredder.

I certainly have duplicate files---------on purpose! That's what my network drives are for! I do multiple backups as once I experienced losing my mother-in-law's 100the Birthday pictures. Luckily, with recovery software I was able to recover the pictures.


I think we need a better description of "what will this software do for me?"

I disabled AVG and can't find it after installing it 5 times.

Installed properly and easily. I find this program is a resource hog and I believe it is causing other running programs to stall and crash.

Can't use it if I can't SEE the text on the interface.. teeny tiny font on an UN-expandable interface = uninstall
also.. why have the square denoting expand interface if it's greyed out and useless?

Not a bad little software... comes in pretty handy....

Not high DPI aware. That's a severe case on my setup, and it means it's unusable. By default, the interface is blurry. It is possible to check the usual high DPI box in Properties/Compatibility which corrects this in many programs, and it has the expected effect of bringing back the interface into focus.

Unfortunately, and contrary to what happens with most software which are not completely high DPI aware, the whole software window then becomes very small, and the interface text and boxes become too tiny to be usable.

Windows 7 64-bit, 1920 x 1200, 24" monitor, custom DPI setting = 150 %.

Also, please note that the English translation is not good enough. As a result, the text of commands and message boxes is sometimes confusing.

I have found best duplicate finder is Clonespy.

IMPORTANT - I remember this from last time around, it's quite a reasonable duplicate file finder, but it defaulted to only partially comparing large files, so if you install it check it has "Full Comparison" not "Sampling Comparison" ticked in the settings. (I just upgraded my 9 to 10 so don't know how it defaults now.)

Duplicate and Same File Searcher is probably the only duplicate file finder you will ever need apart from Vispics for removal of duplicate jpg's with smaller resolution.
Both are free/donation.

I agree with Jim C. You are not really offering anything which isn't already available for free from a trusted company.

Nothing installed when activating installer

This could be a great app. The problem is, there are to many free ones that do the same thing. Thinking off the top of my head, Wise Care 365 and Glary's Utilities both have a free duplicate file finder. This one is free today, but it doesn't make sense to pay $29.99 when free does the job. Thanks to GOTD and Duplicate File Finder Plus 10 for the offer, I'm going to have to pass on this.
