I've decided to try Driver Doctor, downloaded, installed it, got my key, and registered it.
Here is my problem.
Almost every time I want to run it, Driver Doctor asks for my key until I got a message that "too many are using the same key".

UNINSTALLED IT.

Driver DR requires the input of the Registration key for EVERY USERNAME you may be using on your PC (if you use more than one) As I discovered with the Inpaint program, this means you need to Log Off and log back into each of the Username profiles you may have on your PC and Register the program multiple times on your PC if you want the program to work in every profile.

I don't fault the programs for their security, but it would be nice if GOTD or the software publishers made this apparent in the Readme files...

Otherwise, MANY THANKS to GOTD and the publishers for the chance to try out their programs!

Dear GOTD Readers,

Sorry that we could not reply your questions one by one because the replies that we sent are all in the status of "awaiting moderation" and we are not sure how long it will take for the moderation to end. So we are replying your questions here. Please refer to the suggestions listed accordingly. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience that this issue might cause.

1) 404 Not Found Error. If you are having a 404 Not Found error, please contact us at < support@driverdr.com> with the following information: a) the screen shot of the error message; b) the name of the driver that you were updating when this problem occurred; c) the exported file of your system information. We will assist you in no more than 24 hours. We look forward to hearing from you.

2) To readers with the opinion of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". You might have heard of this saying: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keep your drivers in their best shape could not only help you improve the performance of your computer, which should be very important to game players, but also make sure that your computer will be able to operate normally under certain circumstances. Manufacturers spend numerous time and energy on developing new drivers so as to make sure that their drivers will be able to function well in different situations and thus eliminate the trouble caused by driver issues.

3) To readers worrying about the third party driver manufacture problem. It should be made clear that Driver DR is a driver provider, not a driver manufacturer. We are not producing or making drivers but providing them to you. Hope I have made myself clear. Plus, Driver Dr prioritize in providing the best-matched drivers from manufacturers. When the best- matched drivers cannot be found, such as drivers for Windows 10 operating system, Driver Dr will provide drivers from chipset manufacturers, which are safe to your computer as they are approved by WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs).

4) For people who are comparing Driver DR with programs with similar functions, we would like to point out that it has been made clear in your own statement that Driver DR has found more drivers than the other program, yet you still prefer the program you mentioned, which doesn't seem to make sense. We could only wish that more of our users are like you with this loyalty to our product.

These four questions are the most mentioned ones on this page. So sorry that we could only reply you fast enough due to some unknown reason. But we are always ready to assist. If you are having any problem with your program, please send us email to our support email . Thank you for your reading. We look forward to hearing from you.

You "If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!!" guys kill me. We'd all be driving horse and buggy's if we left our world in your hands. Thanks to GAOTD, Drivedr.com and as always, thanks to our members who not only take these programs around the block and kick the tires but also take the time to tell the rest of us the good, the bad and yes, even the ugly.

Downloaded, registered and updated five drivers on windows 10 64 bit.

and yes, I do have to reload my computer every six months to a year but what the hell, if I never fixed it, what would I do when it broke? Take it to a shop. I used to do that 15 + years ago and when I got it back, I had no idea what half the crap they loaded was or why they put it in my computer until I saw their bill. It was all just window dressing to clean my wallet out. With a good back up system and today's prices, I can throw this laptop in the pool and get another one in two hours at half the cost of a shop. Have a good one.

When requesting the key (just after entering email address) a web page appears with special offers -
1) Can we take up that offer say tomorrow (after I read the answer to my next question)
None of my PCs are new, so I have a few old ones, and don't know when I will need your program, thus this question -
2) If we purchase multiple license (say for 3 PCs), can we delay using some of those licenses ?
EG I purchase tomorrow, and do not activate some until say 14 months from now ?

Thanks,
Rob

This installed fine on Win 7 64bit Ultimate, but: first driver I try to install, NVidia nforce PCI system management (it says) has been running a loading bar across the screen for ten minutes now. It shows no sign of doing anything else, doesn't bring up an NVidia install screen, and won't be minimized. It can't be moved to an unobtrusive part of the screen either, although it can covered up by a browser - otherwise I wouldn't be able to write this. It's stuck on Driver Installation, looks like permanently. I'll have to terminate it in Task Manager, but it's a hassle I could do without, and it does not dispose me favourably towards the program.
Twenty minutes later it's still trying to install.
Also installed on another machine with another email. Stuck on installing USB mouse software. Locked up machine. Had to hard reboot, and it is currently having to Startup Repair. When I get control back it's uninstalling. On both Win 7 PCs.

Thanks Driver Doctor for such a fabulous gift today. The software found 18 drivers. This happened in two scans. The first scan, there were 11 drivers. The second scan there was a missing driver and 6 more that were outdated. The third scan said all drivers were up to date after downloading and installing the suggested drivers of course.

I found Driver Doctor easy to use. It definitely beats searching for the drivers :-). Thanks GOTD for all that you do. I gave Driver Doctor a definite thumbs up.

I have a fairly new HP laptop and it found 31 outdated drivers.
All of them updated just fine.

I must say this is the easiest way to check for new drivers, and by far the easiest to download and install them.

There were no comments when I installed the program and started updating drivers. I was nearly finished when I checked back.
The only 2 left were the video drivers - I have both Intel and Nvidia chips in this computer.
I checked the before and after version and date stamps, and both were newer versions.

Some of the problems mentioned could be the result of updating too many drivers before a reboot.
If you are prompted to reboot after an update, you should do it before installing any others.

Here we go again...I attempted to receive the magic numbers for Driver Doctor, following all the right steps starting at the readme file...I copied and pasted into my web browser, entered my email address on the resulting page, twice so they'd know it is a human, or at least reasonably close, that was at 4:15 this morning...A.M. - here it is 3:16P.M. and still no email...not in my spam folder, nor trapped by my ISP, nor in the phising folder...so...where is it? When I attempted to get a resend, I got an "This email address has already been used" message...this convoulted process, with no results, is more then wearisome...some say, "Ya' can't complain, it is for free." And I reply, "Yeah, but I didn't get anything but open, empty air...again." The program installed great...FAT lot of good that'll do me.

With regard to this offer or any offer similar to this one, I would recommend to stay away from driver updating programs. Why? Because of the problems they can cause is the biggie.
So we are talking about driver updates and we all know they can happen and we need them to keep hardware working smoothly.
My thought is a simple one. What are the main components that need updating? Easy...
Motherboard, Graphics Card, whatever else you have added for hardware.
You should download a simple freeware program called CPUID HWMonitor Free 1.29. This neat little program and it will list all of what you have for hardware and give you all the info you need including brand name and model number (which is important info to have).
After you know all of what you have for hardware, go to the websites of each hardware item. For example, I have Gigabyte motherboard so I go to Gigabyte.com then look for my model number motherboard and see if there are any newly released driver updates. If there are, I run the driver update by downloading it and installing. Do the same with you graphics card and other hardware you have. This is the safest way to update your drivers without messing up you machine. It's the best failsafe method to use.

No problems downloading, registering and scanning. Like others mention, Driver Doctor found 17 updated Drivers needed (plus 2 devices missing drivers).

Tried downloading all and even just one and I cannot because of same errors which everyone else has. Incidentally, it found my ASUS needed these 'required drivers' in about 10 seconds: that is the fastest I've seen any updater working.

I already use SYSTWEAK "Advanced Driver Updater". I ran it yesterday and it reported drivers up to date. I ran it again today, after Driver Doctor and it still reports that I do not need any updates. It takes ADU about 13-14 minutes to run through my entire system. I have used many Driver Updaters but have stuck with ADU for 3 years [BTW., It is a Microsoft Gold Partner]. It works similarly to Driver Doctor (except for that amazing speed) and lists any updates needed. You decide which, it does a backup of drivers and then automatically installs whichever you choose. ADU updates are malware free.

So, to decide which is best? In this case I vote not for the fastest but the one I know definitely works. How can one programme say all okay and another say all definitely not okay. Had I not registered under GAOTD, Driver Doctor would presumably stop after the Scan and ask for Registration (and payment) before being able to proceed to do the main task of actually getting the drivers.

I'll keep it a little while and try it again but it seems to be erratic and one of these products appears to be wrong!

DL and install/registration were a breeze. To test, on my Dell Latitude E6410 (I5 processor, 8 GB ram), I ran Driver Booster pro and found zero new drivers. Then I ran this after backing up my drivers with Glary Utilities pro (all have paid licenses). After the scan Driver DR said that I have 11 updates. I blocked the Dell touchpad update, (as Dell's improved touchpad driver makes it completely erratic. I don't think they'll ever get an Alp's tp right!) very easily using the program's context editor, and dl'd/installed the other 10 updates. Every one did a backup, and all went smoothly until reboot. A window popped up with a mystery warning of handler error- no idea which, as there was no report! I closed the pop up warning, and I then re-ran Driver Booster again, and found that three of the updates that Driver DR installed were old and outdated (Broadcom Bluetooth controller; Intel 82577LM Network gigabit controller <12/16/13>; and Synaptic SMBus <7/23/15>). I again used Glary's driver b/u, and then let Driver Booster Pro do it's thing. When it finished, I rebooted, and again the handle error window popped up, and again there was no error report! I am at odds at this point Driver DR did find updates that Driver Booster Pro did not, however, 3 of them were out dated. Then there is the mysterious start up error which I've never had before. It is definitely something Driver DR's updating created, I could go through the Driver DR restores one at a time and reboot after each restore until the error stops appearing, a long and tedious task, but at this point, I think for expediency sake, I'll restore the drivers with Glary's backup, and just uninstall Driver DR. I never had any problems with Driver Booster pro, and why fix something that's not broken? Thanks but no thanks. I've no time to repair mystery problems that I didn't have before!

Mike OD, Well actually I got it off another computer and put it on mine this program is very good. I keep a running tab on my drivers the only one I don't mess with is my Flash BIOS so I thought it would find perhaps 1-2 drivers but it found 29 I was shocked so I looked them over they are legit drivers it even found my old hardware that I had taken out and replaced. The download and install was the easiest I have ever ever used to install drivers. I'll give this a 9.5 on good program it speed up my computer and fixed an annoying problem I had when I had manually installed my HD audio drivers. Kudos to the programmer on this software I won't be able to afford to pay next years license it's just too high but I do find this program as a need.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!! Updating software (including device drivers) CAUSES PROBLEMS of many different kinds in many cases. Don't do it if you don't genuinely NEED the update! And certainly don't do it without creating a restore point and/or complete backup first.

"Always install every possible update" is very common and very BAD ADVICE!!!!! Only install updates of anything IF there are new features you need and/or if the current installation is not working to your satisfaction. EXPECT unexpected things to begin to malfunction after the update and be prepared to roll it back.

Doubly beware of "automated" updates because your particular combination of hardware and software is unique and just because a driver update works for others using similar hardware doesn't mean it will work for you. So you really don't want anyone or any process screwing around with key software without adult supervision.

Reply   |   Comment by Doug  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+36)

Doug, I'm afraid that is not really a good reason to advise not updating drivers. The whole concept of an update is to correct issues or add functionality.

Just because something is running OK doesn't mean that it can't run even better in the background with an update.

The key, as you mention, is to create a restore point, which any self respecting driver update utility would do so as part of the norm of operation.

So it's not a case of updating software (including device drivers) CAUSES PROBLEMS, butuUpdating software (including device drivers) CAN cause problem, not WILL.

Reply   |   Comment by Ozarks  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-9)

Doug, To not update your drivers can be an incredibly risky way of running a (VERY) probable unstable system. Updates are created for three reasons: improvement, security, and/or system stability. To ignore them is to do that ostrich act where if you can't see danger, it can't be there.

Reply   |   Comment by Mike OD  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Doug, while updating drivers can cause problems, it only happens rarely, so your dire warning is quite simply not needed.

To address your last point: "your particular combination of hardware and software is unique." While that is true, it actually does not matter what software you have installed on your PC. It's enough for driver update software to see that a driver is outdated. The software you have insalled on your computer will not affect any driver updates.

John, that is not true. I know this becuase I've been using driver update software for many years. Driver update software, never just updates the date of a driver, they actually install new drivers.

Reply   |   Comment by Roger  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Graham, I think that might be a key point.
Update them one at a time, and restart every time it asks.

Got a driver related problem? Begin with your PC mfr's support site, and then try the OEM. But 3rd party? No thank you.

Khalidm, it is extremely rare for dirver updates to cause blue screens. Sure, it can happen, but it's unlikely, and you will never have to restore an image of your system like you did to fix the blue screen.

For the most part, driver update software is safe to use.

Downloaded and installed fine on my Windows 8.1 converter to Windows 7 machine. I was looking to install a specific driver for my Gigabyte Ethernet device.

Before installing I scanned with the online DriverEasy version. It did not indicate the Gigabyte Driver was needed so I installed DriverDr thinking the large database would indicate the missing driver. It did not.

System restore rolled back the install of DriverDr.

I used DriverMax (free version) to find and install the missing Gigabyte Ethernet driver.

Downloaded, installed and registered on Win 10 64bit without any problems ... On first run it found a few "outdated" drivers, which I'd only updated a few days ago from the manufacturer's website but decided to let it go ahead and update them anyway and got BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and had to do a system restore because my PC wouldn't reboot.

Worked fine for me. But I first ran my IObit Driver Booster program to see my driver status. It showed 3 drivers needed to be updated. Then I ran Driver Doctor and it found four drivers needing updating. They were USB, mouse(2) and sound drivers. These types have never caused any system wide issues after updating. So I let it download and update all four. It created a system restore before the installation. I rebooted and all is well. If this program has a fault, it's that it will install multiple drivers without reboot. To me, this is a recipe for wreckage. I'm no expert, but I think a reboot should happen by default after each one or two driver installations. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway I think that this program is a keeper. But I suggest you only install one driver at a time, then reboot, to be safe. Thank you Driver Doctor and GAOTD!

Injeun,

Thanks for your very kind feedback.

Windows will reboot after some low level drivers are installed. If you used Windows 98 to install IMEI driver, after installation, Windows need a reboot. At the age of Windows 98, AGP Driver need to be installed before installing the Graphics card. Currently, common devices does not need a reboot . It is designed by Microsoft in order not to disturb users too much.

Does the program provide Guarantees OEM Drivers Only? If not it should. I would not be interested if they supply third party drivers because of possible conflicts.

DriverDr Support, In an online review of Drive Software where yours was included, one of the points against your software was that you were not using OEM drivers.
Do you only use OEM drives for drive updates?

I agree that, in general, if it isn't broke don't fix it. If you feel the need to optimize for a particular purpose, you should do so. But, critical graphics drivers update themselves, and windows updates cover most other situations (such as new WiFi devices).

What would be of greater interest to me is if there was a software that provided an complete inventory of my drivers, showing me what was current, what was not, why I might want to upgrade, and why I might not.

Beyond drivers, such an inventory should include CODECs, printer and USB drivers and other system level components needed to keep a computer functional.

Then and only then would I actually make a suggested change or update.

sj, unfortunately what you whish for is not possible, as in the majority of cases, driver updates are released without any changelog. This means that there is no way to know what the update driver adds or fixes.

I've tried these driver update programs in the past from GOTD and do not like them.
Most of them 'find' unnecessary drivers for uninstalled software - all find 100-200MB 'updates' for graphics card that are already installed.
Useless for me.

Normally. such a driver update software, provides roll back ,
each time it installs a new driver.
This one does not- which is very dangerous cause- a new driver can
destroy any pc , by giving a Blue Screen of Death.

Winston,

Thanks for your kind feedback. Driver Dr does not have roll back feature currently. But it creates restore point before driver is installed. After installing drivers, if you need, you can use Windows to roll back drivers to previous version. Please don't worry if you meet any issue while using our product, as our support team are always here to help you.

I have just installed, activated and run DriverDR.
It scanned quickly and found a few updates.
My comment and suggestion for an improvement to the program is that the results announcement (Where it says "Attention Found 16 devices to update...") looks EXACTLY the same size and position as a web banner advert, so at first I ignored it completely (thinking it was an advert for something else) and did not even read it. I would suggest a change of look to move away from the banner advert look would make the program better.
Now to go and update some drivers!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the scroll bar in the results does not behave like most others. It does not scroll - it jumps down or up a page at a time.
Might be good to have it scroll like probably every other program on the planet...

Never quite understood the need for these type of programs. Windows users get driver updates when Windows is updated. I used this in the past and found many of the drivers were not compatible and caused more issues then they solved.

Reply   |   Comment by D Miller  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+20)

D Miller,

I am also used Microsoft Windows automatically update drivers, but many times, it cannot provides the latest version of drivers. And sometimes, when you find there is a missing drivers or incompatible drivers in device manager, it does not provide one driver for you. It is so sad.

Reply   |   Comment by Alik  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

D Miller, recently windows update came out with a trashy update(KB 4130768?)- a cocktail of nine files, including AMD card and intel updates. I have about 30 entries in my Update history telling that the updates have failed. Windows update does not have a 'restore point'. When I contacted their expert, I was told that my PC hardware is NOT compatible for Win 10 pro. When I asked why I was given this OS, i was smugly told that MS only checks ELIGIBILITY and not COMPATIBILITY. If you check their FAQ for win 10, the answer is different. At my PC start up, the message is 100% configured. Then it says 'updates not installed, undoing changes'.

Col, driver update programs that advise name and accessibility of new or updated drivers are a very useful tool. However my free advice (worth exactly what it costs) is to NEVER use a third party when updating your graphics (NVidia) Card. Never ever do that! I'd give identical advice for motherboards and Bios updates. Programs like this one are great for the other stuff in your PC, but not those three. Always go to the mfr for those. Like the vendor said earlier to Winston, you should be able to roll back all but Bios with the Windows restore tool. Good luck my friend! -skd76

Does it allow us full control ?
EG It scans and suggests updates, and we choose which to install ?
And more importantly (for me) - can it identify missing drivers, and offer to install those ?

Rob Crombie,

Yes. It allows you full control. After scan completes, you can choose to install a driver that you wish to update.
Driver Dr will detect all missing drivers and outdated drivers in your computer. So you can choose to install the missing drivers.

Windows 7, 64 bit, Packard Bell EasyNote TX86. The software installed and registered without problems. It found 19 outdated drivers on my machine. I let it download and install them all. After the installation completed, it required a restart for the machine. After the restart, the laptop did not start up anymore. Not even into safe mode. I had to use a system repair disc to roll back to prior the changes via the system restore. I won't miss with my drivers anymore. That's a promise :-)

I like this type of softwares, as suggestion is all about PopUp action windows. They block access to program core UI as minimise for ex. So my suggestion is action to be on the same main window as progress or to have option to do this. Also option for download location can be good too.

License Key - not receiving email? I’ve had similar problems several times but this time it’s a bit different.
I got the download link no problem at my xxx-xxx@ email address but not the License Key using the same address. So I used my xx.xx.xxx@ email address and received it straight away.
If this only helps one person, I’m happy to take the time.

DriverDR is one of the better driver update tools. It has a a very large driver database, which means it does a good job of finding driver updates, and may find more driver updates than some of the other driver update software.

However, before using this, or any other driver update software, it's important to note the following:

More often than not the drivers your computer manufacturer has available for download are outdated. Usually, about 6 months after releasing a PC, the manufacturer will stop publising driver updates on their website, even though the actual hardware manufactures will continue to release updated drivers. This is why DriverDR and other driver update software will often find updates when the PC manufacturer shows that there are none avilalable.

While you can get driver updates from Windows Update. They are often outdated, and not all devices are supported. This is a good reason to use driver update software such as DriverDR.

Often updating outdated drivers won't lead to any noticable performance improvements. Because of this it is not important to keep your drivers updated. However, on occasion driver updates can lead to improved performance, or fix issues, so it's not a bad idea to update them.

Aside from updating old drivers, software like DriverDR can be very useful for finding and installing the needed drivers for devices with missing drivers. For example, maybe you don't have a bluetooth driver installed. This will mean you can't use bluetooth on your computer, as the driver is needed to tell the computer how to use the bluetooth hardware in your computer. DriverDR will quite possibly be able to find and install the needed bluetooth driver, after which bluetooth will work.

Sometimes driver update software will install an incompatible driver update which won't work or may even cause crashes. For example, you may update your sound driver, and then then you have no sound. This can be fixed by using Device Manager to rollback to the old driver (you can Google how to do this), which will fix the problem.

While you've quite probably never heard of DriverDR before, it is a rebranded version of the popular driver update software Driver Easy, and is released by the same company. However, Driver Easy has more features such as driver backup and restore. If you miss today's giveaway, there is a free version of Driver Easy.

Personally I prefer IObit's Driver Booster to DriverDR, as in my opinion it works better. It is often avilable as a giveaway too. However, DriverDR is one of the better driver updates, so is worth grabbing before the giveaway ends.

Roger, Thanks for a detailed description and "how to" when updating drivers. I do agree, and I only have one more concern. If it is possible to check out the digital signature of each driver before you install, there should be no problem using these tools. I remarked, the same company is behind, Driver Easy, I have tried as online version with a reasonable result. However, I wonder, how comes the same company produce two driver updaters ?

Anyway, thanks a lot to, Driver Easy, and the team behind GAOTD. I'll give this one a try, since I have a good experience with Driver Easy.

Roger, You mention twice; "DriverDR is one of the better driver update tools". How do you explain dat the name don't show up in ANY test or comments about driver update tools I googled in Englisch, French, German and Flemisch? The many problems I read here and on the Flemisch GAOTD don'r matter to you?
"If it isn't broken don't fix it" still is a wise action.
