Download links I tried getting yesterday...sent to me at 9:42am this morning. Well done, anyone else have to deal with this total exercise in frustration?? First time in years I've had this much of a glitch with gaotd . Disappointing.

I've tried it out. Registration is easy and worked flawlessly.
I've loaded an image into Dramatic B&W but somehow the b/w version just shows a lower resolution version of this image - that's very strange and a no-go. The overall operation is quite simple and user-friendly. The presets are what separates this one-trick pony from other (free) image editors.
But with this resolution bug I'll probably not use this program.

I've just downloaded and got the key instantly - have those who haven't tried an alternative email address?

I'm waiting for a long time without receiving any key. I submitted my info several times, using 3 eMail adresses without getting any key.
Can someone find a solution and answer me before the giveaway ends, please?

Sadly, program will not install on Windows 10 Home. Whenever I try to execute the program I get a Windows error message that "A required privilege is not held by the client."

I can install other software so it is not a problem with my computer. I have never had this error message before with any other software I have installed. Obviously, I am installing as "Administrator" so it is not a permission problem.

Big disappointment.

I downloaded, installed and filled in password request form 2-3 hours ago - no reg code received. Tried again making sure my email was right - still nothing. So tried another email address and still no reg code.
Seems like they really don't want too many people to have their little program for free, does it?! Shortly the offer will be over but as far as I can see - and so many others here have exactly the same complaint - the offer really didn't exist for very long.

Nice one! NOT!

Ruth Hartley, I've just downloaded and installed so no problem or limitation for me.

Reply   |   Comment by D J  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Ruth Hartley,
I think the same as you. When I was submitting my info, there wasn't any captcha to fill. But the captcha was present since the first seconds, after the giveaway's end. So, I think they wanted us to think our data was submitted successfully, and in reality it wasn't, and no eMail was sent, because no captcha filled.

If it helps at all...

The idea behind HDR images is more data -- you take 2 or more photos, each with the full data your camera's sensor can provide, and since you take them at different exposure settings, not all of that data is the same when you combine them -- the result is more data in a single image than your camera is capable of.

Making B & W images out of color photos can follow the same logic... A color image has more data than a picture taken originally as B & W. A color image also has more data than a B & W or gray scale image when you simply convert its format in an image editor. So you keep all or most of your color data, but transform those colors into shades of B & W. If you check the info for one of the sample images on the page for today's GOTD, you'll see it's the same as a color photo.

Dramatic Black & White is on the easy to use, pretty simple end of the spectrum. You can do the same conversion in Lightroom, but there's a lot more to do, so it's not so easy & not so simple. Franzis has a Projects app that fits somewhere in between, with presets you can use.

That said, there are downsides... One is that it takes a special setup to print one of these B & W photos in all its glory -- instead of using 3 or more colors + black for a color print, a color printer only uses black, and that's just not as capable for the full tonal range. Instead think something like a ink jet loaded with 5 cartridges ranging from pure black to light gray.

The other downside is that if/when there is a preference for B & W, it's artistic -- there is no technical reason color isn't better. And artistic means polarizing, as in some people will love it, & others not at all.

No XP version? Why?

XP EPOS has MS support until 2019, so why exclude users?

Reply   |   Comment by gaotd  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

gaotd,
"XP EPOS has MS support until 2019, so why exclude users?"

Because POS isn't intended for desktop or regular consumer use.

There are also practical reasons... Microsoft included new capabilities in every newer version of Windows. Some of those are taken advantage of in hardware, & they're all taken advantage of in the tools Microsoft makes to write code. It is possible to use non-Microsoft tools, &/or to do extra work when writing code so that the result is XP compatible, but it is extra work. A software company has to judge whether the amount of sales to XP users would be worth it. A company with lots of potential customers in China for example, where more people still use XP, might say yes -- Jixipix said no.

mike,
For many years I have enjoyed your comments, but, please do not write about coding and the tools to do it when you have actually no understanding of it.
This comment is utter nonsense as you overcomplicate the situation and that causes confusion.
As a developer if I use a Windows function that is not available in earlier versions it will not run on those versions.
These functions can occur in programs I create or components I used in programs I create. A very simple one is the equalisation of volume say in videos a function built into Windows 7 but not available in XP.
You overcomplicate the situation regarding this problem because of a lack of understanding, please stick to what you know.

While I can appreciate software like this, sometimes having a one-trick wonder is like cluttering up the kitchen counters with lots of one-trick gadgets. You learn to use that one special knife for everything and get your counter space back.

I tried DB&W on my pictures with faces, landscapes and beach sunrises. I was only impressed with one of the face pic results using the randomizer and a few tweaks. There's lots of options available, but the amount of tweaking for the best result vs the vast array of thumbnail effects to choose from still left me wanting more variety for the amount of work needed.

Honestly, click "bandicoot" then "bloom" in (the free) Photoscape and you've instantly produced a beautiful B&W version of your image. Or use any of the very nice presets in PT Photo Editor, which we were just offered here a couple of days ago. While today's offering is certainly a fun addition, it's not quite enough to hold my interest or my hard drive space. Uninstalled.

Pros: I do appreciate the easy install, easy key retrieval, clean interface, drag & drop capability, and allowing "save AS" - not overwriting my original image, plus the basic features like crop.

JixiPix is always fun software. i have a few of their programs and every now and then am able to create a sweet image that i would not otherwise be able to do so So easily. I have most of the JIXIPIX photo modification programs as well as a full Topaz Suite. JIXIPIX function very well, easy to install and will give you alternative approaches to ... in this case B&W. Grab this one and check out the others. (I have 14 of the 18.. I should have bought the full package)

Donald Pullum,

Have you found this able to do anything Topaz's B&W Effects doesn't do?

Reply   |   Comment by Paul  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Paul, no, I think not... and no, it is not as versatile as Topaz, but if one does not have Topaz B&W2 [$60], then why not download it [$0 here or $12 Purchase]. Spotlight and the moveable ellipses for effects is quick and easy.

Reply   |   Comment by Donald Pullum  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Donald Pullum,

Thanks. B&W Effects is so powerful I can't see it being duped by a simple program. This is a terrific program for those who don't have that or a previous giveaway German made B&W program.

Received the registration key instantly, no internet connection required for program activation.

It just a b&w effect generator, there is the dice button in the top right which can choose it randomly, If it were doing this for a video it would be more interesting but for a single photo only.

Buckoooo ,

No problem, no one is immune from making a mistake. I am glad I could help.

Just be aware that the virustotal scan of FastStone Image Viewer 6 shows that it is not 100% clean.

It might be a false positive, but some experts warn against treating false positives too lightly.

Cheers,
