STILL hoping to have been able to have gotten in on this giveaway but even the link in the email sent to me only results in the 404 error "OOOPS!" page.

Y'all apparently don't check your subscribers' comment posts all too often because now there's only 30 mins. left on the countdown clock for me to download the software and if y'all had read my earlier comment and corrected your error'd download link then I wouldn't still be up at 23:34PM wishing and hoping it'd finally work!!

Thanks for nothing.

If you can't activate it, just restart the PC and try again, 3-5 times, or change your network.

I'd reaaaaaaaaaalllly like to download & try this software, however, for the past 30 minutes each time I've attempted to, it's led me to a "404" url link not found with the only clickable link option for me there being to return to the website's mainpage....

Is this going to be corrected before the clock runs out or should I just not bother wasting my time hanging around waiting to see if the links start working again?

Thanks

Every time I try to open this file to setup download I get a warning that says it will damage my computer. Is there malware attached to this file? I could use this program but I don't dare download it even though I have downloaded several programs from here. I have never gotten a warning like this from any download; as in 25 years of using a computer not just pertaining to this website. So that being said feedback would be great, to the what and why this is being flagged as harmful.

Reply   |   Comment by Maranda Douglas  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Maranda Douglas, It's a false flag warning because as a file recovery program it could possibly cause you to restore virus infected or dangerous files if you had them before and removed them. I'm a PC tech and have used this program many times for my own personal use.

So in glancing at the entire comment section I will try to answer most of them.
1. IF you only have one drive ie Drive C you really should at least partition 2 drives if not more. Or add an external drive for backup etc. Grab a free partition program like MiniTool or Easus Partition Master etc. While Windows HAS a drive manager it's very basic ie you can't split or divide a drive. And don't worry about your data which is the point of today's GOD and others. Think of as a pie chart or a pie. IF you have a standard PC with the single drive C showing you really should get to it. For example I am a monster computer geek with 9 hard drives (mostly 1-6 TB). For each drive I divided them into 2-3 drives with different letters ie C, D, E etc.
2. With the above programs you won't screw up your PC or Windows which is why you need more than a C drive only. Like with File History I backup to Drive U where I keep ALL my utilities like today's GOD. Windows WILL crash as will your drive. It's not a matter IF, but when it will crash.
3. Then install today's program which it will allow you do so in your new "drive"
4. You CAN install it on Drive C - Programs but not suggested.
5. To install download, unzip the file. The License Code is in the read me file. After install launch the program & at top left click on the gold key and input the license code.

This is why I do a twice weekly Macrium Reflect full backup of C: Free & easy to rebuild main drive.
Not one of the many 'recovery' prgs does the job all the time. Might recovery some if run immediately
but don't put blind faith to work.

So it says on destination pop up: Don't install on the drive you want to to recover data from.
Okay, that makes sense and answers SOMEWHAT my firs question: How can you use this to recover data if your HD is down?

Do I buy another HD on which to store this? Can I put it on a thumb drive? Another computer that's connected?

Reply   |   Comment by Randy  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+16)

Randy,
That's is why I asked the question earlier on in this thread.
I've even written (on more than one occasion) to the vendors of such programs to ask them to make the program 'Portable' and able to run entirely from the thumb-drive without need of a 'functioning' C:\ drive which might be what users need to recover data from.

Reply   |   Comment by JW2  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

"How can you use this to recover data if your HD is down?"

If you mean recover data when a drive is dead, you can't. You can send it off to a recovery service, where they might for example put the platters from the failed drive in another drive to read the data, but if the drive is unreadable as-is, no software can read it.

That said, if you've got files that you need to recover, whether from a disk or OS error or accidentally deleted etc., you need to stop writing to that drive partition ASAP, to the point that powering off the system is not out of the question. That's because anything written to the drive can overwrite the data you want to recover, making the loss permanent. Then to recover those files you have a few options.

If the files you're after aren't on the Windows partition, just run the recovery software, as long as you don't write anything to the partition with the lost data. If the files are on the Windows partition, you can boot to the USB stick created with image backup software, and perform a full backup of the partition, including free space -- afterward restore the backup to another drive or partition & run the recovery on that. [That can be the best option for an SSD, because if the drive or Windows runs a Trim operation that will delete the file data you're after.] While some of these recovery apps are portable, or can be made portable, very few include an option to make a bootable USB stick with a copy of an OS on it, e.g. Linux or WinPE, so you can run the software. You can create a Windows To Go Drive [using a $20 SSD + a $6 case] using Win10 or Rufus, and install the recovery software to that copy of Win10, and that will work. You can download the Win10 ADK [~5 GB installed] to create your own WinPE USB stick, & a portable recovery app *may* work with that. You can also remove the hard drive & use a drive dock to connect it to another PC/laptop, where you'll run recovery software.

Already had v.6.8 of this program. When I started installing was asked if I wanted to uninstall previous version. Gave the OK & on it went. Didn't need to enter licence key so it must have used the key from the previous version. No problems, then. From my previous experience this program will work as well as others I've tried.

guus, It says 6.8 on the installer package but when you install & run it you will see v&.5 on the interface. the funny thing is that in my list of programs displayed in Geek Uninstaller it displays "Trial" as it did with the previous version.

Reply   |   Comment by Hasbarat  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

guus,
I queried this with their support people off-site, but I can confirm that it is version 7.5 when it's installed.
Still no answer though, as to whether the program is really 'Portable' (as in able to run entirely from the thumb-drive).

Can this software be installed and used from a USB thumb-drive, without having any effect on the PC's normal C:\ drive?
Since the download is a .zip file, is it a 'Portable' application and able to run directly and entirely from the thumb-drive?

And it seems you haven't learned 'the installation secret' either.

Reply   |   Comment by JW2  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

JW2, and what OS will you boot to run this IF it was portable? The one you was trying to recover data from?
Bad news - even if you don't install recovery programs on the drive, just booting Windows might overwrite the data you attempt to recover.
What you should do instead - make a Windows To Go install on a thumb drive, boot it, install and activate your recovery programs on it.

Reply   |   Comment by temp  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

"... is it a 'Portable' application and able to run directly and entirely from the thumb-drive?"

Whether it's portable or not, you still need an OS to run it -- IOW you can't put it on a USB stick & boot to it -- & that's what you need if you want to prevent Windows from writing to the hard drive and potentially overwriting the data you want to recover.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

JW2,
I think I can answer that question now. I installed this program on a thumb drive (that I use for all portable software). Successfully installed and registered with key provided. The program ran successfully in another computer also with different OS. Only caveat being that it required the registration key again to register. I guess, the registration is stored in the computer and not on the drive. So it worked, so far.

The 7.5 version does not support for Windows XP 32-bit. 64-bit is supported.

Reply   |   Comment by DoYourData  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

DoYourData,
I have version 6.8 from your previous giveaway installed on Windows XP 32-bit. It was activated when i last run it.
After reading your comment, i started it and it said something like "failed to activate". I tried to re-enter the license key for 6.8 but it said, that the key is already used!
On that GOTD you stated "NB: Lifetime license with no updates.", just like today. Why did i lost my activation status then?

I downloaded todays GOTD and used the key from it on my 6.8 version - it worked.

So, it is a "Lifetime license with no updates.", but we have to renew the key every few months when/if you release a new GOTD, or we get reverted to trial?
How is that "lifetime"?

DoYourData AND temp , hi .

I am running Windows XP Pro 32 bit .
Do Your Data Recovery 7.5 Pro , installed and running without a problem .
So , at least in my case , version 7.5 Pro supports Windows XP 32-bit.
I had previously installed version 4.1 Pro (2016-05-07) and 5.8 Pro (2017-08-08)
and both worked just fine before and after the installation of version 7.5 Pro .
So , (again) at least in my case , the license is lifetime for all the versions I have .

My Win XP PC Specifications
Windows XP Pro 32bit , Intel Core2Duo E8500 3,16Ghz ,
4 Gb memory (DDR 2) , NVIDIA GeForce GTX460 768Mb .

I just installed version 7.5 and it seems to run fine on XP SP3 on my old AthlonXP system (no SSE2).

What i am concerned about is why did my previous install lost its activation when they released the new version?! I didn't touch the current GOTD prior to this.
Since the program checks it license on each run, for some reason it got deactivated...

The activation requires network...if you have installed old versions, you don't need to need activate it again, after installing the 7.5 version, it will be activated automatically.

If you can't read from a drive, no software will work -- you need to send it to a recovery service, though you can certainly attempt a hardware repair, e.g. swap some of the components, yourself.

Caroline, what it means "unformatable hdd" in your case?
Also, do you try to recover all/most files along with the folder structure, or just a few important documents (and what type)?
Give some more details, so people can help you.

temp, Thank You
It is external hdd displayed in explorer as 2 separate drives
Computer management cannot display or change device names for these drives
When I try to recover with different recovery softwares it shows that it finds about half of files,
without showing them, but then stops and asks to format second drive.
When I click on formating - is the thata message formatting could not be completed
Many thanks in advance for ALL sugestions

Caroline,
you can use DiskGenius (a.k.a. PartitionGuru) i suggested earlier - either on a full raw image of the drive, or directly on the drive.
First, use "Rebuild Master Boot Record" from the Disk menu.
Then, use "Search Lost Partitions" from the Tools menu. Select to scanthe whole disk. It will start scanning the drive and will ask you for each found partition and also show you the files on it - keep the ones that look properly.
After this done, if there are still files missing you can use "Recover Lost Files" and/or "Recover Files By Type" also from the Tools menu.
Good Luck!
