I had over half a terabyte of data and software [many programs from GOTD - Thank you] that were completely locked out to the point that the OS could not even recognize that the drive was formatted. Several "Gurus" said it was impossible to retrieve in their native tree structure. I wouldn't listen to them and over the next few months GOTD offered several restoration programs, but none of them did the job I needed. Finally, they offered this program and it restored everything as it was before the cataclysm. Thank you GOTD and thank you "DOYOURDATA".

Please people read before you start complaining! When you download the program and open up there are TWO files! A 'readme file' is what you HAVE to READ first. After reading and digesting it's contents carry out the instructions! After installing the program, open it and go to the 'menu', three horizontal lines at top right corner of window. Click on activate and enter the 'serial number' you copied from the readme file!! It's taken me longer to type this reply than downloading, installing and activating the program! Program took about two minutes to complete, download install and activate.

Downloaded and installed on Wind 10 without any issues. Did this first thing this morning and have just completed the recovery of some images from a spare 2TB that had the partitions deletes and after a very long wait it looks as everything was fully recovered, there might be a few unimportant files missing but nothing I would miss. Although slow, as to be expected the results are impressive. I've used faster recovery programs, but this one seems to be very through and isn't a resource hog like some others. Definitely worth hanging on to. Thank you.

DaveC, if the partition was deleted, why did you use data recovery?
What you are seeing is the FAT restored from the spare FAT and not a real data recovery.
It seems your drive needed undelete instead of recovery.
Your findings are trivial and are not accurate tests since the recovered data was not on bad sectors but deleted or bad FAT.

It is easier and much smarter to do a backup than a recovery.
Furthermore, if you hard drive crashed, how are you going to start a recovery program.
Lets assume some how you succeeded to start a recovery software on a crashed drive,
every recovery software needs space to write over the files that are being recovered and
that is why no software can recover 100% of a crashed drives,
many of the existing files will be overwritten by the recovered data and never recovered.

Downloaded, installed and registered without any issues (Windows 7 Pro, 32-bit). Put a crashed SATA drive in a USB-SATA caddy and launched the program. It immediately showed me the directory structure; that was very encouraging. It tells me it will take over 5 hours to scan the disk, so I won't know how well it can recover until then. I will post a follow-up when the task completes.

If by crashed drive you mean a drive that will no longer boot, you should be able to see it in Explorer.
Just because it's crashed doesn't mean that you need a recovery program.

Null, I look forward to your followup because, after registering this, I get the impression that it's a TRIAL version, promising only to scan & list recoverable files but not do anything beyond that. I hope I'm wrong about this because I have a trashed HD to try & recover but don't want to get my hopes up.

Procyon , Inconclusive so far. As far as the trial vs. pro, as soon as I put in the registration code, the "Trial" in the title bar disappeared and was replaced by "Professional."

XP-Man, yes I understand that--but this disk was never a boot device. It was used to store some DVD backup files. One day I put it in the caddy and got the typical "cannot read from this device"-type messages. Repeated attempts to pry any data from it were unsuccessful, so if this utility can recover something, I figure it's worth a shot. Still waiting.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the results of my testing are "Inconclusive." With a large drive (2 terabytes) scanning can take several hours. On the first pass, the program said it found nearly 700 files, but it also said that the 2T drive was no longer accessible, meaning I had to start all over again. So I started a second pass, and after a few hours got the same result. This may be because the drive is far too gone for anything to be salvaged, so I don't think it's a fair assessment of the program. Unfortunately, I don't know how "much" a drive can be inaccessible for this program to be useful. On the plus side, it doesn't install any garbageware and it doesn't insist on having your email address. And it certainly might be useful under certain circumstances. Sorry for the lame review everyone, especially sorry to GOATD and DoYourData.

Pretty impressed that the program could see the directory structure when explorer couldn't see the drive at all.
I also have a disc in a USB caddy that Explorer suddenly couldn't see; think my this is kaput from a dose of static onto the electronics, best of luck with your endeavour.

XP-Man, Actually, I'm pretty sure it's just reading the File Allocation Table, so while that's helpful it's no more than a table of contents for a book. You might have the table of contents but find the rest of the pages are missing (or blank). Still I do give the program props for that.

not everyone has more than one drive or knows how to create a partition for data recovery

That's just NOT a good idea. Data Recovery is not magic. It simply reveals what has NOT been overwritten. If you install the program on to the same drive you want to recover, the data recovery program itself may overwrite the data you want to recover, and then it is gone FOREVER. If you need data recovered off the only drive you own, and it's important to you, then it's worth buying an extra hard drive, or even sending it out to a professional.
