Héhé,

This is great, however the install was confusing, I tried out on small files and he did a great job. I planned to clean up my library... one raining day...on uponce a time.. now it saves me a lot of work and week-ends,

Thanks a lot, Go Go GOTD

This is the first GOTD software I would actually use - I am always looking for a quality MIDI to WAV renderer. Unfortunatelly, I have to second Ron's (#23) comment - since it is just the trial version (yes, after reading and following the readme), it is pretty much worthless for me.

To those who would suggest TiMidity - I am less than satisfied with the quality of its output. The best I have found so far is Audio Compositor. Unfortunatelly, it's author has disappeared from the net and it is not possible to buy the software anymore :-(

Hey, um #72? I really think you shouldnt spew about something your are oblivious to. I converted a few midi files using the software, and I found the SAME results as #14. And yes, I have a good sound card (Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Fatal1ty). But, nice try there buddy. If you were really attempting to make yourself look like a total ***edited***, you succeeded.

good conversion from midi to mp3.
actualy i prefered the sound of the final mp3 to the sound of the original midi files on the sound card of the computer i installed it on...

as for all those who want to convert mp3 to midi or who state that there is no software to do that, the current status is that there is software that does it, but apparently not everyone is aware of what is involved.
when you convert a midi to mp3, you basicly have an inctructions manual on what to play, when you attempt to convert an mp3 to midi, you start out with a sound wave, which as to be analised to determine what instrument resembles the closest to what is being played (and there can be lots of instruments being played at once on an mp3) so this basicly resumes to software with pattern recognition.
the current status of pattern recognition is still not perfect.
we humans are still the best pattern recognisers, so all software that "attempts" to convert mp3 to midi does so with serious limitations.
but, it is funny to see your best mp3 song come out of a midi file.
especialy when the mp3 file is not just instrumental :)

so, for those that want they mp3 in midi format, forget about it, as its currently imperfect technology.

Thank You GOTD! Everyday I have to check what you have to share on your site. I am so thankful for all the great software I have downloaded. Though not all are useful to me, (like this current software as I don’t have a need for it and cannot make a fair or technical comment about it), however, I know that there is always someone out there that might find it useful and able to share more helpful information for others that might seriously be looking for that type of program.

GOTD I am truly thankful that you provide a variety of software "FREE" and that we have a chance to try something we normally would never try. THANK YOU!

Are the Mp3s that I create with this Royalty free (lame mp3 codec) or will I be endebted to and possibly sued by the Frauenhofer people for distributing mp3s without paying royalties for using their codec format?

Every day, there are tons of negative, completely incorrect comments from people who haven't bothered to actually check out the software. You could at least read BladedThoth's reviews. This program doesn't depend upon your soundcard; it has its own soundfonts, and supports other soundfonts. It's also not a trial or adware version (perhaps you didn't activate it).

Every day, there are arrogant, selfish whiners who post useless comments about how they don't like or need the type of software offered. GOTD can judge popularity by number of downloads and activations; they're interested in feedback from people who have actually tried the software. And plenty of people have posted about the possible uses for this type of software.

#53, Swan, Google is your friend (try vocal remover/removal software/freeware/shareware, whatever). I noticed a mess of shareware, $20-$200. One I didn't test, but looks above average, is powerkaraoke.com Karaoke Sound Tools, $50. A freeware app is Wavosaur (wavosaur.com). It will load MP3's and .wav files, saves as .wav (plenty of freeware converters from/to other formats). Load the file, select Process->Vocal Remover, save the result. I downloaded a vocal-heavy MP3, worked pretty well (none are perfect). Sources typically have to be stereo, most subtract monophonic (center-channel) sounds.

How could a MP3 has better sound quality than the original midi???? It can only prove your sound card is a piece of crap....or maybe the micro$oft soft wave table is a piece of crap. Nevertheless it indeed shows that this software is pretty good.

GOOD SOFTWARE PEOPLE The purpose of this is because someone may have a song thats a midi format and convert it to mp3 so they can burn it to a CD

Thus lots of CD burning programs will not burn midi files and many more only deal with the mp3 formats.

I'm not even going to bother downloading this.
If you want a high-quality Midi-MP3 (or WAV) converter, you should use iTunes. It's free, it's a great program, and you won't be able to tell the difference between the midi and the end file sound-wise.

I believe, unless I am mistaken, that some audio editing programs don't "like" midi files. Occasionally, I do background sound effects for class projects (e.g. the students write a radio show, and I do the background music and fx for them) and it seems to me that last time I did this, I could have used certain song files, but they were in midi form, so unusable with my editing software. I think this program will be useful for creating soundtracks for PowerPoints or recordings or, as #58 says, for background sounds for movies.

Thanks for an awesome program! I'm just getting my system set up to record music from my guitar and keyboard (using Ableton Live), and this is a perfect little program to convert the MIDI files I create so I can share my songs with friends and family. I know it's not a program everyone will like or need, but for me it's very useful.

One of the reasons I like this site so much is because the software is so varied. It's important to have a diverse collection offered here, rather than ordinary programs that may appeal to everyone but be of little or no real use. No matter what, there will always be whiners.

As for the program itself, it seems to work perfectly. I actually didn't even know something like this existed until I came here today, so I'm happy I did. Thanks again, GOTD!

This program is exactly what I've been looking for. I write all of my band's music in Guitar Pro, and we've always wanted to be able to have a CD of the tunes to listen to over and over to become familiar with them. This app lets me convert the MIDI files then burn them to audio CD. Great program!

This is yet another piece of software (5 days and counting,) for which I honestly have no use - the comments (the constructive ones only!) have of course confirmed this for me, but I am truly happy that there is at least a minority group who can use this.

At least it seems like an excellent product for those who need such an application. Thank you very much to the developer for taking part in the GOTD initiative :)

If anyone knows of software that will remove the lyrics from a song and leave only the music behind, I’d be absolutely thrilled to bits! As a dancer, the lyrics sometimes make no sense to the dance, but the music itself is beautiful. A piece of software that can achieve this for me, would be invaluable.

It's an excellent program. I bought it about 6 months ago, and use it frequently. For those who wonder why it exists -- there's an enormous amount of FREE MIDI music on the Web. After downloading it, I run it through this simple-to-operate program and in short order have MP3s, which I can then download into Pinnacle or Ulead movie making programs; makes great background sounds. And I'm sure there are users who want MP3s for other purposes.

Guys,

Many of you understand this software, but some of you are totally missing the point.

This software allows you to convert MIDI (Which requires specific MIDI hardware to play a MIDI file) to an MP3 (which requires basically a simple synth chip, like a basic basic basic sound blaster, or your $10 MP3 player has).

Being a musician or MIDI composer would make this a very useful tool since you can convert your MIDI directly to MP3 (without Speaker to Mic port hacking) and listen to yours and other people's creations anywhere you listen to MP3's. There are plenty of other uses for this (besides those of just musicians), but that is the best example.

As for plinkity plink sounding MIDI files...well, many do in fact sound that way...but MIDI files can be as full and rich as any music played on an instrument (actually upto 16 or 32 instruments simultaneously...how many bands do you know with more than 6 instruments). So a professional MIDI file can be quite amazing.

Another important thing to note is that MIDI can be used for background music on a webpage...BUT it is limited by the MIDI hardware of the user BROWSING the page...so even if it sound AWESOME on the composers machine, the user browsing the site would hear a REALLY simplified version if they did not have good (or any) MIDI hardware. By converting to MP3 on the COMPOSER's machine, you get the same full rich sound that the composer intended, not an "interpretation" by whatever lame hardware the user has.

ANYONE that uses or plans to use MIDI software to compose should grab an install a copy of this, and you will be glad you have it when you try to distribute your hard work. This is a solid "Giveaway of the day", it just has a narrower user base, that's all.

By the way, MP3 files cannot be converted into MIDI files becuase (amoung other reasons) of harmonics. I can give a GREAT musician a music sheet (this would be equivalent to the MIDI file) and the musician would play it great...but if I give it to a novice musician, it would be lousy. Now the music sheet (MIDI) is the same, but each musician would interpret the music differently and play it differently. So what I am saying is that even if you convert an MP3 to a MIDI file....you are only getting the sheet music..you lose all the asthetics of the player/composer...and not only that...the MIDI output file could only be as good as the MIDI hardware it is played on....which brings us back full circle as to why an MIDI to MP3 converter is useful and a MP3 to MIDI converter is not.

Yeah, I know that is kind of a mind-twister way of explaining it...but read it a few times and I think you'll get the general idea....either that or go get some MIDI hardware and software and learn a bit about MIDI and the limitations and issues with converting MP3 to MIDI will become very very clear.

By the way, any aspiring MIDI composer should take a serious look at Cakewalk's MIDI software lineup and should also spend the extra $$ to get at least a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi hardware setup....Many computers have MIDI chips nowadays, but there is a HUGE difference between the on-board stuff and a dedicated PCI board (just as it is true for graphics). Granted, general sound effects and synth (MP3s) are fine on most on-board, but MIDI quality is basicd on actual "samples" of real instruments...the better the card, the better the samples.

(And no I do not work for any of the above companies...I just own some of this stuff and have experienced first hand the problems that THIS converter solves).

This is going to be very useful. I have been looking for MIDI-type files as a source of lullaby-type music for a toddler, stuff that sounds like the musical toys (well, with better fidelity anyway). GOTD has come through for me again.

Now, if you wanted to convert MIDI to MP3 without this software, I suspect you would just need software that has a "record what you hear" option so you can record the MIDI while playing it in your MIDI player.

This is a very very good software, I have hundreds of midi's and I have tried many times to convert them to mp3 with other programs but with a lot of difficulties and sound was not good at all. This 'Direct MIDI to MP3...' it's just fantastic and very easy to use and also sound comes out much better than the original file!
My midies are mostly pieces of piano (Ragtime, Stride and Novelty) taken directly from Internet. Again many, many tks to GAOTD for this.

The definitive freeware for this task (Midi to MP3) is Timidity++, though I guess this may be a little easier to set up.

A download of the "easy" version of Timidity, preconfigured with a usable 4MB SF2 soundfont, can be found here http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Timidity_Midi_to_WAVMP3/1075746867/1 - though the homepage for this version seems to have wandered from host to host and died.

http://timidity.s11.xrea.com/index.en.html - one reasonably good resources for Timidity and soundfonts - may also help in tracking down some good (large!) soundfonts to use with this one.

http://www.synthfont.com/ - Synthfont is another one (though both this and Timidity have their diehard supporters), also available as a VST instrument
