Worked well on XP, but did cause slowing. I am on Vista now, and it crashes my IE and slows everything down. Have been using since January, and just went on Vista for 2 weeks. I am 99% sure this is what is slowing down my machine and I mean really SLOW.

I tried this program, Direct Access, when it was offered here before and did not use it after trying it out one time because I experienced keyboard lag. This installation, however shows none of the lag. I am using it to launch programs, open specific files and launch websites. The macro for wikipedia search is very helpful. I have not yet configured it to input text, but bit by bit, I believe this program will become indispensable to me. I would not have considered this program if not offered here, but will keep this and most likely purchase it if I need to reinstall or get a new computer or something else that would cause me to have to do without the functionality and time saved with this program. Thanks!

Not only does it speed up repetitive typing, making it a real time saver... it can also be a great time waster when you're finished. Its manual text insert options give you enough rope to program your own playable custom madlibs games!

Great time saver!

I recently finished training to work as an administrative assistant and this saves me tons of time with repetitive tasks. I can type an entire form letter in 5 keystrokes! I have the previous version from GAOTD; sorry I missed an upgrade.

Hi Kiril,
I meant that it's impossible to invoke text by typing Cyrillic abbreviations. Otherwise it's capable of using Cyrillic text. So when writing something in Cyr alphabet you should switch to lat every time you want to call saved text.

I downloaded and installed the previous version of this with no problem. When I tried to enter the license under the "I already have a license" section, I get a message saying "cannot access file because it's being used" I uninstalled the old version (before I downloaded this one) and also uninstalled this version when it didn't accept the license. Then I downloaded and reinstalled this one again, and I'm STILL getting the same message. And yes, I did close and reopen the program.

Cool. After reading everyone's comments carefully, I am going to try this program tonight! I have learned to read the comments -- FIRST.

I agree with Jim in comment 82, Windows Vista can indeed be a pain to navigate. I'll use DA in this regard. Also, I do have multiple word processing and src code writing tasks ahead of me, so this is bound to save me precious time! I cannot wait to download, activate, and use it. Your timing could not have been better, with things to do!

Thanks, GAOTD.

I like this program!
Windows Vista can sometimes be a hassle to navigate and by using a simple abbreviation a folder or program opens very fast with DirectAccess. I would like it to be able to do an 'eject' function with my CD/DVD hardware bay using keystrokes instead of having to go the mechanical push-the-button route. Does anyone know how to find the nav-path to the application that does this?

err. still slow, but it seems to me that the wording doesn't rule out perfectly valid upgrades on this license to 1.6.7, .8, or .9- as long as it's 1.6.xxx, so I will remove my block on addthis and see what happens.

#21 and #26... I agree that comments of people trying to help one another should not be deleted.

I posted a comment to help someone, and it was deleted. It could have been the answer that person was looking for.

It is strange that comments of people whining are left on but comments that could help someone get deleted.

I know that BuBBy will probably respond to this and say... "Well you should have posted your info in the forum." Well then he/she should have not allowed the original post on this thread in the first place. I can't very well respond in the forum if the question was posed in this thread.

Personally I like reading common issues on the program of the day instead of having to wade through a forum. (Such as how to tell if this particular program is registered.)

I like seeing the technical issues associated with the program listed -right with the program- instead of having to go to another webpage and searching to find it. (Such as "gives me this error when I run it...")

Personally it does not bother me to see a few comments each day from people saying things like, "I can't get the file to download". It lets people know -quickly- that there is a problem. If it is in the forums, people might not check there and miss the warning.

I think maybe there should be a poll to see what type of comments people want to see and where they want to see them.

The reason I posted a possible answer to a person's question was because it happened to me personally. It had never been covered here before that I am aware of. (Or maybe it was, and it got deleted... just like mine did.)

I had used the previous version in Win XP sp2 w/o any problems.
Now, I tried to use this on Win Vista Bus., and besides being a nice software, it generated some issues on my machine (my optical mouse isn't working, the keyboard was blocked at least twice).
Between having my mouse working and having this software, I choose with my mouse.

I have the previous GOTD version of Direct Access and find it essential to my work. It's the first program I start each day because I then use it to launch Firefox, Internet Explorer and other programs.

Simplifying and speeding up username/password logins alone make this a great program but someone who needed boilerplate text frequently would find DA even more valuable.

All in all a terrific program.

(Ok, I've just downloaded and installed the new version and it seems fine, maybe even snappier).

Thanks GOTD and Nagarsoft!

hi #68, I also didn't get a reply for nearly a half an hour, so I went back and re-entered the info and bingo, came through in a minute. It does state as you are entering that it might take a bit before they get back to you. If you notice one of the pages, it mentions 900 plus GAOTD donwloads from this site for their program. Perhaps they have been doing this manually or semi manual, but whatever the process, it is a lot to process so I guess we have to have a bit of patience since we were not the first GOT members to download this. Remember, all the other programs did not require emailing to accomplish registration.
Look at me talk after only waiting a half an hour....anyway...good luck to you I guess the numbers will be getting larger as the day gets later, so I guess we have to force our spoiled selves to give them a chance. (LOL)... It is worth the wait and much to be thankful for to get this nice program for free to use for a while. As I mentioned earlier, I will buy this program if I should ever lose it for some pc crash or software screw up. ciao...

I downloaded it a few hours ago, went to the site and filled in my email. I waited two hours and got no email with the registration code. Went back to the site and gave it my email address again. After another 1.5 hours... nothing.
I don't have all day to wait for it, so I'll likely uninstall if I don't get back to my email before midnight. It sounds like a very useful tool.

Thanks to everyone who offers up other free alternatives to tools like this. In this case, I'm excited about the concept, so I may end up trying one of the others mentioned. Information is good. Thanks GOTD!

... and a Thank You Mr. Nagar. Having a developer actually participate in this forum is very helpful. I certainly makes me more interested in a product.

#59--If you would go to DA's website, there are plugs for a rather expensive (at least for my pocketbook) macro program claimed to be the "perfect companion" for DA and said to be from another company.

I've been having trouble getting DA activate--something in Windows keeps saying "this object has been blocked", and I've closed Zone Alarm and am not using my Firefox that has No Script, and IE won't let me put in a file on the whitelisted sites. Anybody have any ideas as to what else to try to clear the way for the activation? I've even switched from IE to Opera but it doesn't seem to matter.

All I can say, after reading all the comments..
Firstly, thank you Andrea Nagar - Nagarsoft for answering all our questions and showing an interest in helping us use your program!
Secondly, I use this type of program daily in my business.. I have to send out confirmation emails for orders, and it's horrible having to type the same thing over and over and over. Programs such as this have save me countless hours in doing tedious typing and they are great!
I've got mine set up for my sig., various replies to the same old questions, and so on. This makes it worth every penny charged for these kind of programs!
Many times over the years I've tried different things, and when I find one I really do like I do buy it, so it does pay for the developers to let us try before we buy!

WOW the temp. has gone up to 32 degrees now! We're having a heat wave!

This program is basically a clone of ActiveWords, which is the appropriate comparison product. It competes directly with the standard version and suffers in comparison to ActiveWords Pro, with the latter's ability to create and execute simple macros. DirectAccess needs a supporting product to lauch macros, although with the aid of that product, it can launch much more complex macros. ActiveWords, however, is not currently being developed, which is an argument for DirectAccess. Both products are far more powerful--but also more resource-hungry--than the various freeware launchers infelicitously compared to DA.

This is my first comment at GAOTD though I have been visiting this site almost regularly for the last 1 year. GAOTD has been offering some really good programs as free for a day. Yesterday’s offering ZC Video Converter was a really good one. So is today’s. Infact, I had just purchased a copy of Direct access a week back---the only GAOTD offering that I had purchased so far. That really gives an indication how much I liked and needed the program. But had I waited one week more I need not have spent $40 out of my pocket. However the purchased version will give me free technical support and free upgrades to version 1.9 which is not available in the GAOTD version.

I had also downloaded the program the last time it was offered at the site and had used it satisfactorily for more than 6 months to launch programs, folders, files and websites and type texts with easily rememberable abbreviations. But there was one issue: Direct access used to consume a hell lot of my m/c’s CPU and memory when it loaded at start up and so every time I had to wait at least 2-3 min after Windows explorer and desktop loaded and then only I could work with mouse and keypad. BTW, I am using a relatively new m/c with 1.70 GHz Intel Pentium M Processor and 504 MB RAM and also using spyware doctor full version which is also known to make m/c’s slower. Direct access added to this and since it loaded last, sometimes it crashed. However once it was loaded it worked fine.

Anyway, I had lost the program 2 months back due to hard disk format. At that point to start with I was reluctant to buy the commercial version of Direct access because of this start up headache and a steep price( $ 30 would have been OK for me). I tried out some useful freeware alternatives to launch programs, folders and websites in a similar way like Direct Access: They are FASTA: http://www.585soft.com/Fasta.asp and SLICK RUN: http://www.bayden.com/SlickRun/

Both these programs are not as convenient or organized as direct access are but once you feed in the abbreviations and remember them they perform equally well when it comes to launching programs, files and folders etc. Moreover both these programs are very light on resources unlike Direct Access and above all they are free. However in both Slick run and Fasta you have to type the abbreviation within the application box to make them work unlike Direct Access where you can type anywhere on your screen. This feature makes direct access more productive and moreover as you feed in more and more abbreviations into these programs with Direct access you can easily manage them into separate groups unlike the other 2 programs. That’s also a plus. Moreover I was so used to work with Direct Access before I lost it that adjusting into the habit of working with fasta / slick run was difficult. So I finally bought the program last week. Though the start up headache still persists with the latest version however I have worked around the problem somewhat by not allowing the program to automatically launch at start up, but manually launching it only when everything is fully loaded.

My suggestion to those who are not willing to purchase the commercial version of the Direct Access:

1. Download the GAOTD VERSION today before it is over and run the set up program till you are guided to the nagarsoft.com/gotd website where you submit you name and e-mail id( see comment 18 by the developer) and get the license key in your mailbox. Keep it in a safe place. ALSO DON’T FORGET TO DOWNLOAD DIRECT ACCESS VERSION 1.6.6 DIRECTLY FROM THE AUTHOR’S WEBSITE AND KEEP IN A SAFE PLACE. In case you lose this GAOTD Version of Direct Access you can run the setup from the version 1.6.6 downloaded from the author’s website and activate it with the license received from the author today after installation of GAOTD Version. Pls note you can’t run setup of the program with GAOTD’S program setup file after today. Moreover you can’t also activate a later version say version 1.6.7 with today’s license.
2. Try out Fasta/Slick Run along with Texter suggested in comment 24 and you will probably not need this program. Recommended for relatively older m/c’s which do not have the required high levels of RAM and Processor. These programs will not make your PC slower but you will lose some productivity.

For others who have the bucks to spend on a program and have high end m/cs I feel this a program you can buy straightaway without even trying out the software. May be who knows tomorrow the author comes up with version 1.7 and price it at $ 49.95.

I downloaded this program the last time it was offered though I'd never had anything like it before, it very quickly became one of those programs that you don't want to use a computer without. Understanding what it did was easy, setting up the 'shortcuts' was fast and easy and using it was so very easy, what is there not to like about it. Even my nine year old grandson uses this program with ease and confidence. I highly recommend it, especially to newbies like me, give it a try, you'll love it!!!

Thank you GOT for another wonderful software program.
(this message is being provieded by the autotext feature of direct access)...no it's not, just kidding.

Okay downloaded ran activation and great.
I really had not intention of dowloading this program and off the bat, it did not sound interesting from the title, but, my policy is always read comments and the the program description. It was the steallar comments on this site that finely nudged me, and I do mean just a nudge to see what it has. After reviewing, this software,...nothing short of wow...and this is not one of the most important programs I think I have downloaded off this site.
Features of autotexting absolutely fantastic. Direct access links fantastic, this is great and runs very smoothly. I have already been entering information since the tutorial pops up and pushed me to try it then, rather than the later ...that I would have done, or no at all. Many times later, means probably won't ever get to it. Too busy for my own good and now it appears this program is going to help normals tasks much simpler and faster, and yep....productivity will be up, and it appears much time will be given back to me from the features of this software. The quick or direct access is going to be beyond wonderful for me, since one of my tasks is to access 3 sites at the same time to process a transaction. Much info must be duplicated over and over again and yep, it's gets very old.

I give this a 5 stars out of 5 for how neat I think it is and still discovering more....oh...the notepad access is absoutely terrific. I use notepad all day long for accessing standard text info for my tasks. In other words....you folks rock lately and glad I gave in to check this out. Would I buy this, you bet, and at msrp of $49...it will pay for itself over and over again.

OH...Installed like butter (LOL)
Thanks GOT and Nagasoft

Direct Access 1.66 works on Windows 2000 SP4 too although it's not officially supported.
