well i have had some time to check this out, and it's a keeper, the only suggestion is that .ico needs to be added as a supported image format.

#47 Harry: you are right about that. When I did it, before posting the steps, I was referring to the root of the website, which is not the root of the ftp site. For example, on one of my web servers, the root of the site is in folder public_html. That is what I meant. Sorry for the confusion.

This has been a feature of Windows Explorer since Win 95, I think.

#34 Richard: Your trick works fine for subfolders of the displayed FTP address, however one cannot drag the root folder since it isn't displayed in the file list. Dragging the icon in the address-bar results in a shortcut to Firefox rather than a directory link.
I did managed to create that link thru "Map Network Drive ..." in Windows Explorer's Tools menu. Once it's in the Folders list, then one can drag it with shift-control to create the desktop link.

Sorry reghacker. I did miss the part about the virtual machine allowing you not have to program for every type of CPU. I can see that would be attractive to developers.

would not run on vista home premium 64-bit, gave "unhandled exception" when tried to run it first time. used revo uninstaller twice, tried to run as admin, no joy. uninstalled, tried to run in 32-bit compatibility mode, same message. left message on developer's site

Sorry I'm so late to respond on the .net framework issue I brought up, but I've got a life, too. Reghacker your posts are uniformly excellent and I appreciate them, but I've got to quibble with you here. Nobody's whining about .net framework. We want to be sold on it one way or the other. I know you're sincere, but sounds like you drank the Kool-Aid on this one. To a certain extent, I don't care what Microsoft says. I was partly wondering whether there was any more benefits to it, but I think I get the idea. Microsoft decided to "improve" the developing format - mainly Visual Basic - so they wrote a HUGE developing environment. But is it a huge improvement, or just a huge bloat. After all, we deal with this issue every day here. There are other options out there. Just because Darth Bill dictates, that doesn't mean we must obey. Micorosoft needs to convince us it's better for us, not just them. Are the apps. developed in .net SO much better, or, for that matter, SO much easier for developers. That's the real question. So this is Microsoft's next big thing. No, wait! That was Longhorn, no Vista, no Mojave (Hee). Maybe Microsoft's next big thing is Mac or Linux.

The Brainex people have apparently been watching. Maybe they'll give their 2 cents on why they used .net and why those that don't have it should get it.

You can transfer the files over the local network. You cannot transfer files to any computer that has a direct connection to the internet, only via FTP server or as e-mail attachments.

Installed on xp pro 1000 MHZ 512 MB RAM and xp 1500 MHZ 1GB RAM, ok activated both.
What I dont understand with this program is: can it transfer files over the internet betveen 2 computers online in different locations or is it only for a network for computers in the same location without the internet? Does it syncronize over the internet or does it only syncronize in a lokal network? It is not clear describet how you connect the computers in the help file.
Does any one know??.
Thank you for the program GAOTD and Brainexsoft and for all the comments

I had no problems with this install on both XP Home and Vista Home premium, all the widgets set up quickly and this is one of the fastest FTP uploaders and methods of transferring to a network computer I have used. Take the time to view the video on the website and read the help files, it will save frustration. Great download, thanks.

Perhaps faulty downloads may be causing some problems mentioned?

I'm not sure what to do, the comments are helpful, some pro's,some con's about this giveaway. Free alternatives look interesting. Different features for different needs.

Many issues with "bugs". Most of the time we are left to ourselves, we then rely on comments from others to try to resolve said issues.

But not today: we have somebody looking in on us ; A warm WELCOME to Vitaliy (BrainexSoft Support). It is comforting to see you care.

Finally, since we are getting support from BrainexSoft's team, I will give it a try.

Ahhh, certainly a unique program. Installed fine on Vista Home Premium with no need to use "run as administrator". I set up an E-mail drop box and it worked flawlessly. The author has unchecked the "Run at Startup" check box....many other software is checked to run at startup by default. In most cases the only programs to run at startup are your Anti-virus, spyware, and Firewall software. Go to Start> Run and type msconfig, click the Startup tab and look over the entries and uncheck unneccessary programs. This will speed up your system.

It's to bad we don't get updates as the developer is constantly improving the program on a regular basis. The one downfall pointed out by Ashraf is that the passwords are not masked, That's a concern.

For those complaining about the .NET framework...many software programs require this......quite whining.

Here's a definition of .NET framework from Wikopedia:
The Microsoft .NET Framework is a software technology that is available with several Microsoft Windows operating systems. It includes a large library of pre-coded solutions to common programming problems and a virtual machine that manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform.

The pre-coded solutions that form the framework's Base Class Library cover a large range of programming needs in a number of areas, including user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. The class library is used by programmers, who combine it with their own code to produce applications.

Programs written for the .NET Framework execute in a software environment that manages the program's runtime requirements. Also part of the .NET Framework, this runtime environment is known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR). The CLR provides the appearance of an application virtual machine so that programmers need not consider the capabilities of the specific CPU that will execute the program. The CLR also provides other important services such as security, memory management, and exception handling. The class library and the CLR together compose the .NET Framework.

Version 3.0 of the .NET Framework is included with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. The current version of the framework can also be installed on Windows XP and the Windows Server 2003 family of operating systems.

DDWidget Pro 1.4 is an excellent file transfer program and it does what the slurp says because it really makes repetitive file transfer, such as uploading images to a website, allowing you to send files to multiple addressees automatically with floating Drop Boxes.

Here this program got 3 STARS out of 5 from users:

However I find it amazing that nobody has mentioned any FREE ALTERNATIVE to this till now, including my GURU GEEK friend ASHRAF...LOL!!

There are lots of GOOD FREE FTP clients available on the WEB...for instance FILEZILLA:

Or the less known ANYCLIENT 1.6:

Another excellent application (maybe even better than this GAOTD) is FLING FTP SOFTWARE:

Fling is free ftp software to help you automate uploading or transferring files. It is typically used to maintain a web site on a remote hosted server or to automate backup of folders. The software supports both file transfer protocol (ftp) and network file transfer.
Fling runs behind the scenes and allows you to automatically upload or transfer files from anywhere on your PC using the Windows right click menu. Simply right click on the file you want to upload and select Fling upload. It's as easy as that. But best of all, Fling is completely free. Version 2.02 adds help to the wizard.

* Automatically update websites as you complete a change:in fact in automatic mode it will automatically detect when a file is changed and upload it.

* Edit and create documents that are stored on a network folder while still retaining the original as a backup on your own computer.

* Manage multiple file transfer destinations.

* Backup important files by setting them to be saved in a Fling Folder which transfers at a set interval. To manually upload a file just right click on the file and select Fling.

* Individual folders can be set to upload to their own destination.

* Can be set to upload at preset intervals.

* Supports secure FTP via SSL (FTPS) and runs as a service so the software can run when logged off on a server to automate transfer.

* Can be integrated or linked to from other programs using command line arguments to create automation upload systems.

New features include being able to choose Upload Only, Download Only or Synchronize for both "Scan at preset interval" and "Scan Folder on Demand" options. Previously it only used Upload Only. The scanned download is done by checking the modified times of the files in the remote folder/FTP site.

But if you regularly upload or download files and directories between your computer and a FTP server WHIZ FTP 1 is definetely one of the best solutions I've ever seen:

It's very easy to use because all you need to UPLOAD files and directories to an FTP SERVER is to DRAG these files and directories from Windows Explorer onto the Whiz FTP window, whereas to DOWNLOAD files and directories from a FTP SERVER it's enough to just drag them from the Whiz FTP onto Windows Explorer.
It's also possible to perform recursive downloads, uploads and deletes.

Here a couple of screenshots of the program:

Another good alternative solution is CORE FTP LE:

Screenshots of the program here:

Finally another pretty good FILE TRANSFER APPLICATION similar to this GAOTD is COFFECUP FREE FTP 3.0:

As for the programs designed to send unlimited personalized messages with file attachments, besides MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD I suggest having a look at:

Cheers from Italy!!

Since today's givewaway requires .net framework, I wanted to give people a heads up to a thread in the forums debating whether it's worth it or not to get it. I started it the last time a program required .net. I'm not sure we've gotten to any useful conclusions, but you can read what we've said so far here:

Your insights will be welcome, and if you want to join to post, GOTD doesn't invade your privacy with these forums. Your e-mail isn't released to other members (there's a personal message option if you want to receive direct e-mail from other members) and I've never got e-mail one from GOTD itself.

My thought is that .net framework is a significant issue for some and costs GOTD maybe a significant amount of downloads. Some folks don't see the value in downloading 100s of megs (2.0 is almost 200) to allow them to use, say, today's 2.5 meg program. And for dial-up users it's prohibitive. Should developers avoid using it? Or has the Evil Empire made it inevitable?

Note for those unfamiliar: Vista's already got it. I didn't originally know that, either. In any case, any thoughts you have will be appreciated and may help people decide.

This software sounds wonderful -
then I began to install it; my A/V program states this is from an unverified publisher and is not clean of bugs which may be contaminated with viruses ...

Maybe someone will come out with a piece of software like this one yet without these bugs; I was looking forward to this since I interpret this software to being able to use one e-addressbook for all e-addresses.

If this interpretation is correct, do any of you know if there is a bug-free piece of software which would do such?

You can accomplish the same thing using Windows Explorer. In the address bar (turn it on: View|Toolbars|Address Bar) enter the FTP address in the following format:

This will create a link in Windows Explorer to the FTP site and treat it as a folder on your computer. You can then drag the icon from Explorer (from the root or a folder) to the desktop while holding down the CTRL-SHIFT keys to create a shortcut. You can create a different icon for each folder on the site if you want.

Now you can drop files into the desktop icon and it will show up on the website. If you have a lot of FTP sites, put them all into a master folder.

If you want super easy access without closing windows to get to your desktop, put the folder/links into your quick launch folder

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

in the hidden section. Just drag your file over the Quick Launch bar over the expansion arrows that will pop up your master folder or links and drop the files.

I haven't downloaded the software yet, but I have an idea for you. You don't need the desktop shortcuts creatd by installs. Look on your All Progras menu and I'm sure you'll see a program group with at least 2 icons, the program and the program uninstall. So you can safely delete those shortcuts.

To completely remove installs, use Revo Uninstaller freeware:

Now this is something different, and a program I'm sure those who send e-mail's on a regular basis can use. Unfortunately I have too many icons on my desktop (Thanks to great giveaway's) to allow me to place drop boxes to all of my friends. If anyone can try placing a folder on their desktop and placing drop boxes inside and have them work please let me and others in the same situation know. I just don't want to install then un-install the program possibly leaving behind useless files. Thanks GOTD for the offer.

Dang, don't know why this review took me so long...

Anyway, installation and registration were fine on Home Premium 32-bit. As mentioned above, if you are on Vista, run the program as Admin the first time around.

The Good

* Easy to use.
* You can transfer files to a location on your LAN, on your own computer, on an FTP server, or to an e-mail.
* You can set one widget to send files to multiple different locations.
* You can add filters to prevent accidental transfer of an unwanted file.
* You have have multiple widgets, each set to different locations.
* Can be used as a 'backup files' program of sorts.
* You can customize the look of your widget.

The Bad

* You cannot 'lock' the widget in place that is displayed on your screen.
* E-mail and FTP passwords are visible (not replaced with ***)
* Does not include pre-defined settings for e-mail profiles.
* There is no way to make the name of the widget show on the actual widget.
* "Customize Layout" (how the widget looks) is kind of buggy.
* If you add filters, your file transfer will not work.
* There are a few bugs.

Registration okay:
Yep, just be sure to read readme.txt.

Free Alternatives:
DDWidget Free ***Has limitations: Only one DropBox (widget) and 200 file transfers a month.

Verdict: Despite all it's bugs, this program is excellent for what it does. It really makes repetitive file transfer easy, such as uploading images to a website. For me, and most likely many other webmasters, this is a definte keeper. You decide if you need this sort of software for yourself. All I can tell you is that it is worth it.

Great program (concept and interface. Cannot yet say about bugs).
Due to strictly non-commercial usage limitation, have to limit the use by sending sets of files to pre-defined groups of friends.
But real great benefit will be given to commercial users.
Thanks GAOTD and BrainexSoft - this is a new concept, not just another doubtuseful utilite.

#3 - I installed it according to the instructions in the README file and it worked like a charm. No nag screen. The key is moving the licence to the program directory, although I'm sure you would have done that already. So, I have no idea why it didn't work for you. (Note: I noticed a DDWidgetBrowseForLicense.exe file in the program directory. Maybe that will help locate the license file? Just a guess.)

If you have problems activating and you HAVE followed the instructions in the read me file try running DDWidgetBrowseForLicense.exe from the application folder (Anybody with half a brain should be able to find it)
Select the license file through this interface and there should be no more problems

readme means Read Me!
Quote: "Install the software and close it once the installation is complete.

Then, put 'license.license' file which is included in the
installation package into the program's folder, typically it's
C:\Program Files\BrainexSoft\DDWidget Pro.

After that run the Activate.exe file to complete the registration
process. Run the software." -end of quotation.

Installs well, if you follow the readme ;-)

In certain situations this would be pretty useful. For instance if you wanted to easily sent files by attachment to friends, or if you want to update your website just by dropping a file on the desktop dropbox.

The 'license.license' file has to be moved to the program's folder before running the activate.exe

This box pop up when I open the program:

'DDWidget Nag Screen! This message will disappear when a valid license file is installed. You are on day 1 of your 15 day evaluation period. You have 15 days left'

It is activated before (and even after) set up.

I don't know if I have to pay (or delete) after the 15 days ;-/

Vista has in-built option for desktop widgets. But this has a lot of features like file transfers, network etc.

This will be more useful for the people who need to maintain a up to date website with active informations like News etc.

Any how this provides us (simple users) exposure to such softwares and environments.. Thanks GOTD..

If anyone on Vista has problem registering this software, I had the same problem. The first time around I just ran Setup.exe, put license.license in the correct location, and ran Activate.exe. It did not register properly. I closed the program and tried running Activate.exe as Administrator. Still didn't work (I was expecting it to work after running Activate.exe as Admin).

So I uninstalled it all with revouninstaller, and did the whole process over but I ran Setup.exe and Activate.exe as Administrator this time around (running Setup.exe as Admin was properly over kill, but what the heck). Registered fine.

Also I noticed that the first time I ran the program, it would not work unless I ran as Administrator. After the first time, I did not have to run it as Administrator, it loaded fine.
