brendag4 (#84), thank you for the email shortcut info.... :). I suppose, then, that one would have email shortcuts for all their intended recipients, or at least the mainly used ones?
Hmm...could lead to a LOT of desktop icons for just that usage .

Amazing software! This is just what I needed after getting file marker. I was unhappy with the majority of icons out there. Tested this software's features and I'm thrilled. I can't wait to see how my colleagues react when my software and word documents have my face as the icon! Ha!

Paint.Net with the icon filetype plugin can convert any image into an icon. It even can be extended to open PhotoShop files!
http://getpaint.net

Why bother buying/getting a giveaway of software like this? If you need to extract an icon from an *.exe, use IcoFX.

Great software ,installed good ,runs good ,only bad thing about the software you get from GOTD is you get to use it free.It becomes part of your systom. And when your computer crashes IT COST YOU A FORTUNE to replace it.This is another keeper! This software is fun ,easy to use and does what it says . Thanks GOTD

Great Giveaway...thanks for this one!!! I have been using Icon Developer, but my Oject Desktop has expired and I have changed computers lately. I was trying to find another way to create simple, easy icons with my Icon Developer at hand and amazingly this program answers that call.

THE GOOD:
Super easy to create any icon or shortcut. Its GUI is easy to read and follow and very simple, yet powerful in what it's suppose to do. The templates are nice and you can even download more here: http://www.iconconstructor.com/styles.htm

THE BAD:
No icon support above 48x48. Big BOOOO on this one. I would like to see this offered again with support up to 128x128. Since getting Icon Desktop Toy from a previous giveaway, I like having a little bit bigger icons on my desktop since I run a 24" monitor and less than 10 icons cluttering it up.

Definitely worth the download and well worth the price you're paying for it today!! Thanks GAoTD and Icon Constructor.

Some people have asked what version this is. It is version 3.54

#70... RosnSC... To make the email shortcut you need to input the other person's email into the box, not your own. It isn't asking for your name and email, it is asking for the name of the person you want to send the mail to when you click on the icon you created.

I tried it to see if it would work for me, but it says my email client is not properly installed. A tutorial at the below link helped me to fix this problem. (It wasn't that the program wasn't properly installed, it was that IE thought my default email was Outlook when Outlook is not installed.)

http://www.iconconstructor.com/tutorials/

Some stuff I haven't seen mentioned here yet...

It is not simply an icon creator. It helps you to create icons that perform a function. For example, the email icon does not just open your email program. It opens the program and starts a new mail message to a specific person. (I still don't have it working exactly right, but I haven't really looked into it yet.) The web icon is used to open your browser and start at a specific website.

If you start it in one mode such as Web Shortcut and then decide you wanted to be in a different mode, you can switch it to a different mode without having to restart it.

This program can also make "favicons". Favicons are the little graphic that appears on the left side of a tab in some browsers. For example, the GAOTD site has a little image of a 3.5" disk.

I just downloaded, installed and created an icon from a random stock photo - couldn't be easier! I have a set of shortcuts to frequently used folders on my desktop and I'm now deciding which pictures to use, e.g. a snail for the "Urgent Action" folder ;-)

Many thanks GOTD!

I've downloaded and am about to install it; whether I can use it or not, *Shrug*. I do, however, object to the various commentors who give GOTD and its people ANY crap whatsoever.

This is free site, giving away free utility software. Even if I wind up uninstalling a program, I appreciate the effort the folks at GOTD go to in order to provide me with free software.

When was the last time any of you were so generous?

Seems like a pointless tool, especially since the ability to make icons out of pictures is built-in to many Imaging Programs, such as the freeware GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)...

The only advantage I can see it has over such programs is that it automatically shrinks the selected image to the right size for an icon, so you only have to decide how much of the picture will be in the icon. Would that feature alone REALLY be worth $29.95, though?

I personally find no use for this program, so I won't be downloading it.

On a brighter note, can you please rerun HDDLife Pro? My computer broke a week before I could get it and I don't have the money to buy it as of yet.

HELP!! It downloaded fine. I created one folder icon then tried another and it didn't create the 2nd one. I closed the program and tried 3 more times with no luck. I know it isn't me as I did create the first one just fine and didn't do anything different the next time. Anyone else having this problem?

#70 6 negative votes showing means little. If 10 vote positive and 16 vote negative the grand total will be 10 - 16 = -6. Which is why I hope GOTD will someday consider showing both negative and positive votings. It would represent the actual score in a much more transparent manner.

#59 John C "We all could use a good chuckle!"

John, I chuckled just from reading your comment - even though 6 readers apparently didn't (6 negative votes)...LOL.

To all in general - I downloaded it just out of curiosity as I DO like cute/different/interesting icons. I experimented with it a bit, trying to make a Windows icon which didn't work for me. I also did the email one, which I found brings up my email account, and to a new email with my own email address in the To: line, so I figure I did something wrong. I will play around with it some, and check out the Forums for info/help, and see what happens. :)

Thank you GAOTD for this freebie. It is easy to use. I changed a few icons using some pictures I had in my Pictures folder and it worked fine. I suppose it has added a little variety to the bland yellow folders. Although not as valuable (to me for my needs) as some of your "giveaways" this was easy to download, install, and use without additional instruction.

I also want to thank those of you who have taken the time to test the "giveaways" and then offer comments that provide substantive information about what the "giveaway" for that day does and how well it functions and thanks to those of you who share links to similar and usually free alternative programs. The explanations of why you use one program and not another has been very helpful.

Runs wonderful on Win2K Pro. TO GLENN If you will simply type "freeware world team" into google(without the quotes) you will find a search box on their site. Simply type what you need a program to do in the search box and they will find you a freeware program to do it. It is the first place you should go when you need a program to do a specific task.

Thanks for the sweet little program, GAOTD!

This one is nice, simple, and just helped me score brownie points with the ball and chain, er um, wife. There is no learning curve. Downloaded, registered, created icon (of my daughter), and emailed to wife (with instructions). All and all took about 6 minutes. I've been looking for a good icon creator. I like this one as I can basically use any image editor/creation software for the image and then use Icon Constructor to convert it. Sweet...
Thanks Give...day and Icon Constructor!

Nice work, GOTD. I've been looking for a decent program like this for a long time. This software is powerful and very user-friendly. Unfortunately, some of the advanced options that would let the user edit the predefined styles are locked in this version. Other than that, it's a great little program. Very helpful pop-up tutorial when you first open it up. Thanks, GOTD!

While i am greatful for all the free software you guys give away, it seems the stuff you're giving away lately isn't as good as it used to be. I mean i had some awesome programs off here but an Icon Constructor? You can make it in photoshop or something and save it as an .ICO file and it will work...

But to finish on a lighter note, looks great from the screenshot for if you don't have photoshop, or even irfanview. but i am a vista user. =(

This is another nice program. I like to play with my icons just to brighten my computer and change it's appearance. I also use Foldermarker Pro and Bee Icons (both were earlier giveaways). It can be argued that these custom icons will slow down your computer. I'm sure it does. But using a computer should be about having fun. I have fun changing my icons. I can live with an extra 30 seconds for my computer to boot up or an extra 10 seconds to open a folder. Thank you so much GAOTD team. Thank you Icon Constructor

Installed with ease.

Attractive interface.

I haven't tried all of the options yet. But, in less than a minute, I had created a new shortcut on my Desktop and used Icon Constructor to convert one of my photos into a new icon for the shortcut.
Plenty of styles are included. Not many effects, but that's not a big deal because my photo editor can handle whatever special effects I want before I load the picture into Icon Constructor.
This application gets a thumbz up from moi.

Wanna be a Grinch? When your spouse is off his/her computer, take a photo of yourself on removable disk (or if networked, use your network); Then, using this program make an Icon of yourself. Then, change ALL their desktop program icons so that they show a picture of yourself. Use The "Icon Style" option- note the scroll bar for additional styles- and make each icon a picture of yourself w/a different style (ie movie, etc). I would not dare try this on my wife's computer. But if you do, please post the results here. We all could use a good chuckle!

Symantic Corporate Edition detected and cleaned a "very low" priority threat "Downloader" during the download process. Their description indicates that the threat can be used to subsequently download Trojans and other malware.

I haven't installed the program itself yet; this is purely an observation on the process of fetching the offered product.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR VISTA USERS - while this program seems to work with Vista, the Icons it creates are not adequate for Vista's larger sized icons. After registering, they take you to web site with a 25% off pre-release order on a VISTA version. I suppose the new version will make the larger VISTA Icons.
This program is ideal for XP users, not VISTA.

installed and activated ok on xp sp2.but seems kind of basic to me and has it's limits. if you only want to make folder icons or aim icons i suppose it's an ok program. but if you want to make your own custom icon for your programs then i would use other programs like icon fx and liquid icon or for simply converting photos to icon try the free version of pictures to icon. i have used a lot of icon makers out there.for me i use icon fx the most because it has lots of good features in it and it's free. basically it seems most of these icon makers have there unique things they do best.it just depends on what you need to do with icons so this one i will keep in case i need some of the features it offers for now anyways but i seriously doubt i would ever buy it though.

Yeah!... finally an icon maker for my desktop icons. I have been looking for a program that works exactly like this. Photography is my hobby and I happen to have a large 24" screen, so you can probaly imagine what my icons look like on my desktop. I wanted to find a program that I could use that was fast simple and offers a very nice professional look to it. I consider myself an "Expert-Novice" so anything else just did not seem to fit the bill, till this program.
I just tried it out and am finally able to improve the look of my desktop using my pics.
Thanks GOTD and IconConstructor for letting me try this out. There are quite a few programs that use the word icon in the title but most do something else I couldn't use, so it was difficult to find a program by searching that functions like I needed. Several functions to edit or enhance icons and sizes too.
5 out of 5 on this software. OH...easy load and activation too....yep, like butter :-)

But they all tend to cutaway a bit of the lower portion of my vertical image - didn't find any design template which keeps it all intact. It's cool neverthless.
