ConceptDraw is a rip-off. It's overpriced (we paid over $1500 for a 5-user license), the support is awful, the interface clumsy, rendering below acceptable (output to PDF looks very bad and cannot be presented in a professional environment) and the continuously announced upgrade promised by their developer in the public support forum (which has since disappeared from their website. I wonder why!!!) for August 2010 finally arrived in early 2011. We were looking forward to upgrading and finally getting all the bugs fixed, but to our horror we were told that the upgrade would cost us another $1300 for the same user group.

This is by far the worst value for money for a digital product I have ever experienced.

Stay away from ConceptDraw. There are better, cheaper and friendlier tools out there.

My post from yestrday also did not get posted...:-(....

I downloaded, installed, and activated and the program works, but I was not given a reg number---I usually save them...The ReadMe says: Keep the serial number in a secure place - you'll need it for updates and technical support. DID ANYONE GET A REG #? We usually do...

After extracting files to a new folder, I activated, then installed the program into 1 of 4 users on my computer with no problem. I then logged off & logged into a different user. I do this after a giveaway download to see if the full version works for all the users for the computer. If I see that the program is registered there as well and works as the full version, then I need not do anything else. If it's not registered for the other user, then usually clicking Activate solves the problem. If there is no Activate icon, I click on setup and then after it goes through the first part of activating and the install window comes up, I then cancel the rest of the procedure, or let it go through the whole install procedure if needed. I then proceed to do this with each of the rest of the users after logging into each one.

Anyway, after logging into a different user after installing ConceptDraw WebWave, I found that the program was not registered for the other user (and, obviously, the rest of the users as well...except for the user I installed the program with), so I Activated the program within each of the rest of the users. Then after that, it did not say that it needed to be registered anymore, but the weird thing was that for all the users (except for the user I used to install the program) the library of symbols and shapes and stuff was not available and under the drop-down Help menu the first 3 or 4 lines were grayed-out so they could not be used...whereas one of those is for the Manual.

Since I had now already Activated the program in each user, all I had to do to fix the problem was to just go into each user (except, of course, the user I had already installed the program under after Activating it) and reinstall the program.

This is definitely a case where, under each user, Activation needs to be done First, and then Installation is to be done Second. So for those of you who do not have access to the Manual and/or to the objects and shapes library, you might have Activated the program after you had already installed it. Therefore, even though the Giveaway date for the program is over, the registry entries have already been put into your registries, and all you have to do is reinstall the program...since installation needs to be done after Activation for everything to work. If a window comes with an option to uninstall, then uninstall & then reinstall; the Activation registry entries will be retained and the program should then work fine. However, at least on mine, the "Conceptdraw WebWave Help F1" line (above "Manual") remains grayed-out for All the users.

I bet that a whole lot of those that did manage to download and activate it will feel extremely silly once they try it out and come to the conclusion that they have no clue what so ever how to use it to make the actual site about their, for instance, new grandson

So to the the majority of the 355 thumbs up.... the joke is on you.

It is 11:37 here. It states that I have 23 minutes left to download, and I have already done that... however, when I try to activate the software I get the notice that it is no longer the GAOD. I really wanted this software, is there anything that can be done?

thanks

Sorry, I finally found info above. Apparently, a registration number is given on purchase (or on the retail box) and is built into the program, like Windows operating systems and some other software. The registration online requests the number; that is where I entered in GAOTD. Return email from them simply said "thank you for your registration, enjoy...". The Activate.exe before Setup.exe probably did what I did at their website. But now they have my name and email. (No problem. Spam goes to spam folder then I report it!)

Thanks GAOTD! Looking forward to more goodies, specially once your staff vacations are over! Hope you are all rested up when you return and are ready for all of us - complainers and praisers!

Possibly useless after the trial is over -- a registration number window never came up! GOAD, what's with this? Did the activate.exe that I ran prior to Setup.exe take care of this?

#67 - Emperor - Thanks for the info re the tutorials.

Those were actually the .avi files I mentioned in my previous post. Clicking on the link in the star/control panel took me to the ConceptDraw website, which listed four tutorials. I expect these will be of help for experienced designers, but I didn't think they were useful enough for less experienced ones like myself. And, as I mentioned, the two I viewed were hard to watch because the video production was fuzzy.

For those who may find the info helpful, I should add that there is actually more help available for WebWave than I'd thought when I was trialling the program and accessing help that way.

The full list of resources on the ConceptDraw website is at:
http://www.conceptdraw.com/en/support/webwave.php

I wish I'd found this last one (with the lessons for beginners) before! :-) My error!

I do have a couple of suggestions for the ConceptDraw team, (somebody from which is I assume monitoring the feedback here?):

1) Add these 'getting started' lessons to the Control Panel or help menu in the program itself. If they actually are there (and I somehow missed them) I think they should be easier to find. Perhaps a pop up window when starting the program, with a 'do not show this window again' option when the user doesn't need them any more.

2) Revise some of the layout and wording of the lessons themselves. I thought the instructions were pretty clear (and as I said, I'm speaking from a low level of design experience), but I found the text instructions fairly densely arranged and therefore not as useful as they might be for quick reference. I'd like to see these spread out over a few pages per lesson, perhaps in a larger font, so there is little scrolling and easy navigation between the different steps.

3) I believe these lessons should be incorporated into the help files or accessible from the Control Panel within the program itself.

4) Not trying to be picky ... really! :-) ... but there are a few places where grammar or sentence structure in the help files could do with improvement. This isn't really a major hassle - just would help to present a more fully professional image for your product.

Having said all of that, I'm wondering if the help documentation issues I've mentioned mean that the program itself is in early release stage and that this aspect will be enhanced and incorporated more effectively in future releases? (The greyed out F1 help option in particular is something that makes me come to that conclusion. )

Hope the above is of at least a little help. :-)

Cheers
Sue

I have twice today attempted to post a comment, and I get a message that my comment has to be screened first, and the comment never appears.

1. No serial number is provided. Therefore it is not possible to register the program since the registration requires a serial number.

2. Is this a time limited version, even if installed during the 24 hours, or is it a permanent installation.

3. Is there a manual for this complex program or are we to rely only upon the "help" screens? When I try to see the manual indicated under Help, I get a manual for a different ConceptDraw program.

What do you need a registration/ serial number for? If you followed the directions in the readme file that came in the zipped download, then you activated the program before installing it, and that's all there is to it. If you didn't read the readme file, then try running activate.exe now. If that doesn't work, then you might need to uninstall the program, run activate.exe, and reinstall.

You run activate (included in the zip) which will register the software for you, then install the software (in that order). The readme file included in the download will fill you in on the details.

This is the most amazing program I have ever seen, and there is nowhere else where I may find a program that offers this many features for free.

I've already started creating a website for a youth group I belong to, a project we have been putting off for months. Not only does this program allow me to create the website in an easy WYSIWYG interface, it also has various export options. I can export what I've created directly to HTML and upload it to a server, where it will be complete and ready to use.

I urge everyone to download this, even if they don't think they ma use it in the future. Even those with experience editing HTML can find use of this program.

Thanks, GAotD, for the best free program I've ever seen!

Who mentioned Kaspersky for free...

It's already available - http://www.activevirusshield.com - as part of a web security initiative by AOL - sure, it's a slightly restricted version in that you can't omit files / directories from the scans, but it uses the virus signatures of the full product.

Small note - don't install the toolbars it offers !

How to get Help working in the program: Go to the installation folder, Help folder, typically "C:\Program Files\CS Odessa\ConceptDraw WebWave\Help", make a copy of "ConceptDraw WebWave Help.chm", and name the copy "WebWave Help.chm". As for the manual, "ConceptDraw VI Manual.pdf", which displays as ConceptDraw V, there isn't a download (even though the Readme says there is); check the online version. The actual size of the update is essentially the same as the GOTD download; it's almost certainly the same code.

If you installed the program correctly, it shouldn't be asking for a serial number. To register CS Odessa GOTD products online, enter "Giveaway of the Day" as the serial number in the web form, and they'll email you an actual serial number (considering the GOTD terms, unclear how useful this is).

CS Odessa are great programs as usual. I understand people giving a thumb up without even trying the app. This company always offered us very high quality programs, was quite well-disposed to help us (allowing commercial use of their previous giveaway if I well remember and even offering a licence to a GOATD user who wasn't able to grab it on the giveaway day ! (see here))

I have no crash using it to map an existing web site.

Regarding the serial, it's not a trial version. It means that if not register, it won't launch but merely ask for the reg key.
If you had executed setup first, at your first attempt to launch the application, it would have asked you so.
So if you can actually use the program, then the "activate" module has done its job right :)

Thanks CS Odessa !

I have successfully downloaded and installed it, but see no serial number, nor any indication of trial vs. full version.

BladedThoth reported crashes when mapping his site. My experience was that it seemed to do nothing for quite a while, then when I shrank and restored the window, it started pulling down information from the web. It shows over 1000 lines of information on the html version of the site map. Fully 50%, or more like 80%, are items that are not on my site. It seems to have mapped a site I use to track hits, statcounter.com, including many of their internal links. It has loads of links in the map that are totally meaningless in terms of my site, that are, in fact, nowhere on my site.

The graphical presentation inside the program suffers from similar problems, although it does not seem to have as many items.

The structure it assigns to my site, which is a linearly laid out site with about 11 main pages, does not reflect the organization of the site. It does not resemble the site map in FrontPage.

I admit I did not spend much time with manuals or video tutorials (I also found the videos hard to watch). Nevertheless, Wizards should not need full fluency to use. I just clicked and went. Not happy with the results.

JK

#26 Frank, the short answer is "NO"
Think of this app as a "sketch pad" for website builders. You can "quickly" layout non working elements on a page, and link pages. The basic idea is two-fold. First, being able to quickly (cheaply, time wise) create something for your client to look at. Second, having this visual aid to use as a reference when building app. Particularly helpful if more than one person is working on the project. (Remember, although the premise of GOD site is personal use only, fundamentally, this program is intended for professional use).

#42 Chris. The date on the download page should be only for the download page itself, not for the app (although there have been a few other GOD downloads that were date limited. They were thoroughly slammed too, violates the assumption most of us are working from). I don't think that using the app as a demo in a classroom exactly qualifies as "personal use", but I suspect the vendor won't object too vigorously.

#45 Helloworld. The GOD site is "honor system". So yes, you could use it for professional/commercial working from the single PC it is installed on, and the vendor is unlikely to know. The idea of the GOD site is to get a download you can try at home, and if you like it you will purchase a copy for commercial use. If you have no personal honor, go ahead and use it for commercial work.

#61 Sue: In the Start Menu directory entry for this program there is a link to a WebWave help file that is stored in the program's help directory. It includes some tutorials on accomplishing a number of tasks. Perhaps it might be worth another look?

For those interested in using this program with Visio, this same help file does say it is possible to import data from Visio 2002 documents.

Installed w/o errors with Vista (Ultimate); although the installation did seem to take a long time. Also, Help files require running in compatibility mode.

This software could be incorporated into the creation process, at least for the pre-sale client interaction.
@#50: This is primarily for the pre-production stage, rather than actual development era.

Thank you, GaotD. This is why the site works.

It seems there is an unusually high number of 'no' selected for the usefulness of comments today.
