Installed on a couple of machines (XP Home & XP MCE) with similar installation experience. It went smoother on the second machine, of course, since by then I knew what to expect.

After installing using the Administrator account, the first time CP ran I was presented with a screen requesting my name & email address. Then, after submitting the info that window continued to run in an apparent "waiting" mode.

Fortunately I decided to let it continue without closing and opened a browser to check my email where, finding a new message, I clicked on the provided link and the waiting installer window changed to present a big green check mark indicating activation/registration success.

I suggest that the developer should add a few more words of instruction to that window to clarify what to expect during this procedure as this is quite different from other GOTD email-type registrations. Not hard -- easier, in fact -- but different.

Like others, I noticed that CP had become the default printer for this user account.

After looking over the setting options I did the usual "disable" for any auto-updates. I then exited the program, went to print something and it popped up and everything worked OK.

I then logged into another user account (normal/non-admin) and tried to launch CP from the Start Menu so as to check and see if the original/initial settings changes were universal among all accounts. However, I encountered software errors and it would not work. (I think it was an Abelssoft window that appeared for reporting the error condition, so I did.)

I discovered that for each of the other user accounts you must first change the default printer to CleverPrint, then it will launch without errors.

It will also request that you enter your name and email address as before during the original installation; however, if you supply the exact same name and address info, it will properly register/activate (without repeatedly sending you a new email and link each time).

You can then proceed to change the option settings to turn off the auto-update function or other choices; I.E., the setting choices are not universal among all accounts, so these steps must be repeated for each account.

On the second machine, I also entered the exact same name and email address to easily register/activate those accounts without bothering with any new email messages -- thank you very much!

However, a couple of times when attempting to launch CP to register in those additional accounts, the program would crash every time in spite of first being designated as the default printer device. Using Windows Task Manager I discovered that a process "CleverPrint.exe" was running as user name "System" rather than belonging to the account user's name. Logging back into the Administrator's account and terminating that process with Task Manager solved the problem for the other non-admin account. How does that happen on occassion?

Program has some very nice features and, although it is much slower to initially launch/process/appear on a print job than the now-free iPrint which I had been using:

www.clicktoconvert.com/iPrint/

...I think its additional feature set will prove very handy -- thanks, AbelsSoft and GOTD!

I've investigated EcoPrint and compared it to Clever Print, and from my observations these are two different categories. EcoPrint uses a special font to reduce ink usage while this program is designed to conserve space. Still one would have to fully keep track of the ink results of both programs to compare side by side.

#63, vicky, in the unlikely event that you read this, you extract the files from the GOTD .zip and run Setup and/or Activate according to the Readme. The GCD file is used by those programs as needed, it's not for your use.

#64, Gene, several of the programs mentioned may be able to do what you want. I know that priPrinter Professional can, but the full list price is steep. It leaves text as text.

Installed & had to use a temp email to register. All went well, but.... Those of you who have installed: CLICK ON SETTINGS TAB & THEN SETTINGS BUTTON TO UNCHECK AUTO-UPDATE! Program is set to update in 1 month (default). Otherwise it will revert to shareware. Just an FYI ;-)

In response to tontiloqui @ # 64 and as update to 32, I have installed easily on Win 7 32bits. No anti-virus flags were raised. Although, it set itself up as the default printer, right-click to print (a 1.2Mb .docx) seems to take forever with a very heavy ram hogging. Why I would have faster responses on XP than on Win 7 really beats me even after considering the differences de the two individual machines.

I GIVE UP - downloaded 3 times, when got no results printing, uninstalled it again but same results, never printed "anything".

After an hours of fiddling guess I'll never know but would be fun to do 16 or maybe 32 pages to a page just to see what I'd get....Don't have anything against Ablesoft, have others of their program but something missing here. No problem installing though it never came up with a way to register - except GOTD did say it was activated but who knows. Thank goodness for REVO doing it job and "cleansing house"

I have 2 actual printers installed and several virtual printers installed that I use for different applications. This installed as a virtual printer. When I opened the program it had all my printers listed with my default printer first. When I printed a document it changed the file type to .clpr which was the only choice unless I wanted to save it to a file, and it changed the default printer to this one. Seems folks want a program to do more than their printers are capable of, i.e. save toner feature, duplex, etc. which is dependent on their printer. I would like my printer to print borderless or print in a million colors too, lol but it won't. As I said earlier, I still like this program.

Also got demand for German .net to be installed. Running Win7 Professional 32bit with Spanish language OS and .net installed in a language other than German. I would like to try this software but cannot see how I can as I am not prepared to overwrite my current version of .net with that of a different language. Has any solution been found to this?

"Register the program by providing personal details on start up. ..."

(as suggested in the readme.txt file)
No popup window or the like showed up ... !

***(2) Must the program be registred during the giveaway time windows - not to stop working soon?

@37 What is it that You don´t understand in the word Giveaway? It´s for FREE!

Installed w/o any problems on both my W7 64 and my extremely slow mini PC with XP.

Only issue was a weird language when I was to choose installation language;but since I have some brains it wasn´t really much of a problem.

Maybe the developer fixed these things before I tried it,they seem to have been quite active here during the day.

Which btw tells me they are serious. They are also a German company, not chinese pirates, which gives a bit more cred.
Even if I must admit that I got a bit suspicious since the first thing that caught my eye was the spelling of "Main freatures" in the description.

Remains to find out if the program is of any use!

Yet another prog from GAOTD that does not work.

Win XP SP3. With Win zip installed and extracted to a folder I made for it. With Win zip extracted the GCD file to the same folder.

However clever print does not appear as an option in my printer folder. If I want to print from say Kingsoft officer writer it does not appear there either.

Even more strange the prog does not ask me to register or give an email address, even after restart. I would appreciate the developer or GAOTD posting how or why their offerings do not work, and how to get them working!

Clever print can be opened up from its folder . Nb if you are onme of the lucky ones whom have it actually working them remember to uncheck the box for automatic updates.

Clever print says that it can open a document, buy it does not recognise any documents formats , and wants them saved in it own clpr file,

If you choose the German option of file type, it appears to recognise pdfs and pictures but then opens the files in windows picture and fax viewer.

How anyone can charge for this defeats me .

@Fubar (Comment #61) -- You may find that the drivers for the Brother line of lasers and AIO units come pretty close to the degree of control you seem to be missing from latter day HP models. I've owned several HP models, going way back to the venerable LJ-2 in the 1980s, and the Brother MFC-8890DW is very likely the best b&w laser -- and one of the best pieces of computer-related hardware -- I've ever owned. (Even though it's an All-in-One, that I got more for faxing than for scanning or printing. But it has turned out to be a real workhorse. Worth the cost, when you amortize out over a few years.) I still do quite a bit of printing.

Haven't had time to read all of the comments here, but there is one feature I'd find really useful in a utility like the one under discussion. That would be the ability to mark up a page -- quickly and easily, onscreen -- to print out designated portions while skipping the rest. (Such as to skip ads, or irrelevant sections, thereby printing only what you needed and wanted to save.) No loss of the existing page formatting, and no switch to printing this as a graphic image. Some of this can be accomplished via extensions to FireFox, but I think that is a temporary hiding, for display purposes only, rather than something that would affect the printing. If one of the programs mentioned here can do this, I'd be interested to hear about it.

There are several reason that I quit using this type of software. Most such software converts the printout to graphics. That can result in an enormous loss of quality on today's printers, especially HP laser printers. Most printer drivers do handle n-up printing, and if your printer has built-in duplexing ability, that's best (otherwise, use ClickBook--very clever manual duplexing). HP has become the same as everyone else and does a poor job of long-term support. One of the reasons that I selected my HP color laser printer was that it used to have the most amazing software. You could control every aspect of the laser printing process, and you would be surprised how many parameters that there are--all sorts of temperature, humidity, and charge parameters throughout the entire laser printing process. That software hasn't been available for many years now, and not even a real printer driver. You have to use a generic HP driver, and it's not possible to set all of the parameters correctly for the printer, but it works. Yes, there are rare occasions where printouts are handy, but I'm almost completely paperless. I can easily view two or more documents concurrently on my PC. As for the cost of mobile devices, compare the costs of a printer and all of its supplies, including ink/toner and paper, to say, a Google Nexus 7.

what I like about Abelssoft products is, they listen to what people say, and should anyone have a problem downloading or whatever, you can guarantee that at some point they will post a comment that is designed to help with the problem, not like some of the companys who give us the choice of trying out their software for free, they just ignore us. I have tried most of Abelssoft freebies at some point, not all to my liking but glad to have been given that opportunity, and because of that have gone on to buy them, just remember no matter how much you moan about a programme here, it is free, yes there might be better or worse out there, so why complain because you don't like what is on offer any given day.

While the suggestions for free software here are cool, some people more then often tend to forget the mission of Giveaway Of The Day which is offering FREE SOFTWARE THAT OTHERWISE YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR!

We all know what the price tag of something is, but for today, and everyday its FREE. As a casual blogger, I often test all the software , write briefly about it, and then tell my opinion, thats what everyone visiting here wants to see. Not their experience with free software.

Please. Lets get some people here who have actually tested the software.

Programs like this are still useful, for example to use before printing to a PDF. You can print from multiple apps (not just webpages) to Cleverprint, then delete and re-arrange pages as you need them, and then from Cleverprint print to a final PDF document. Also, I still use multiple page printouts from time to time, especially to print out lists that would normally take hundreds of pages but can now be reduced to 10's.Booklet printing would certainly be a plus. Thumbs up, though.

My suggestion: make it a stand-alone application instead of a printer driver.

I don't need these functions every time I print a document, my driver (Canon) already can do previrew, multiple pages, print from last page and other useful features. So I prefer to keep my printer drivers as default.

Every printer driver (even PDF writers) shows the checkbox "Print to file", so why don't you make your software able to import this kind of file and work on it?

Installed quickly and easily on my Win7x64Pro machine w/8gb ram. Did NOT hassle about "deu" language pack; also, did NOT ask for email & other info when I launched the program (which concerns me a bit; not that I want to give them such info, but neither is there an indication anywhere that the installation is GOTD-registered and not a trial install). Not had chance to try the program yet, but a quick click-thru looked good.

As an instructor, I create many documents, and I have created many booklets. Unfortunately, it would appear that CleverPrint does not offer duplex booklet print...

One reason I always liked HP was that they had great printers and excellent drivers. Too bad they have really cheapened up on the quality of printers. But, with their quality drivers and careful planning in Word, OO or other real word processor, you can readily create any 2-up & booklet format you want (L-R / R-L reading orders, vertical or horizontal binding) - it does take practice to get all the settings correct, especially if you are manual duplexing or reverse order printing.

Given the built-in utility of most printer drivers, the only real use for an application like this nowadays is to edit a print job (i.e. splice / remove pages), force binding margins, but more importantly, scale fonts! I have often printed a classroom copy of some huge reference manual in 4-up duplexed (8 pages per sheet of paper) for manual access. Some printer drivers do this better than others, but the ability to scale fonts would make this easier to read (which none of the printer drivers offer). Having the PDF on your cell phone is great, but sometimes, you need to see multiple pages at once, or more than one person needs to see the same copy at the same time, or there are too many files to fit on your phone.

As a freebie, CleverPrint is nice to have around. But it's not good enough to be worth paying for. Add the extra features, and maybe it would be useful enough for the true document maniacs.

Nice software if you do hard copy archiving and occasional print preview, other than that, it has no practical purposes as of today's technology. Can not disable color fonts or reduce pictures properly if they are in GIF or CVS format. Some scanned images are not reduced properly too. Not very popular because of .NET dependance, since Microsoft always does updates and patches to its products, can not guaranty that this software will work in the future as intended.

Uninstalled, not because of bad features, but it interferes with my other print drivers and PDF virtual printers and I will not use it on daily or even monthly bases.

#32 - Ian: Your printer hardware has to be capable of two-sided (duplex) printing in order for the software to be able to do it. Some printers do it automatically, some you have to tell it each time, some you have to manually turn the sheet(s) over and lots just don't do it.

Was using iPrint at one point, but it became a little buggy. I have a Brother printer & the software it came with is reasonably useful but does not have many of the features offered with todays giveaway. For those who keep saying Windows print software does all this, I'd like to know what you're smoking. For those who keep whining about .NET Framework, go buy an overpriced Mac & shut up. You can save some ink by installing some of those dotted fonts. Will be giving this a try as I still have the need for some large print jobs & not everyone I know is walking into phone poles or traffic while starring at their 'smart phones'.

I can see this could be very useful software. The ability to combine information from different programs is nice. I use Paintshop or Twisted Brush (which has version 17 free on bitsdujour.com today) for graphics and Open Office for text. I also liked the addition of watermarks (graphics or text) and headers. I think this must be similar to a virtual printer. I use Paperport for most of my information and with that I can combine print jobs, rearrange, delete pages, edit, etc. It is awesome, but it is not inexpensive.

Excellent piece of software, been using for years now, and I do occasionally for archive purposes use the 4 pages to a page printing, and regularly the 2 pages to a page for printing guides for various video games, and to reprint manuals ie, for my John Deere Tractor, Chainsaw and the like.
I just wish this giveaway was like my last Cleverprint giveaway I have where I could reinstall at anytime using a key/code after installation, in case my HD crashed again.

In many cases, printer software needs to be designed with a particular printer in mind because of its specific characteristics and sometimes even quirky requirements. If it's not then some features may work but others cause various problems, based on my past experience. I have uninstalled and reinstalled previous printer software I don't know how many times because of various conflicts. Thus I am planning to stick with my Brother printer's own custom software which already has most of the features of today's GAOTD offering. Not to mention the weird situation with the German .NET issue. Thanks, but no thanks.

NR 1 hit the nail on the head. Surprised to see more posts fluffing up this software.
With a show of hands, how many REALLY have a need to print more than one document on one page?
Show of hands. How many of you can read your document or would even dream of handing one out during a meeting with 4 documents on one page? (Don’t forget to hand out a magnifying glass)
For those of us who may want to print out 2 or 3 power points on a page with room for notes can do so right from the MSOffice power point itself.

So, sorry, this is like one of those programs that was developed back in the late 90's and someone just found it tucked in the back of a drawer and out of ideas, the decision was made to market it.

Nr 31, not sure what programs you use but EVERY picture editor program and office program I use gives the ability to PRINT more than one object per page. You may be on that very short list of users who can find a use but it's a waste of hard drive space for most. Just saying.

I read the factsheet and took the tour on the website, but it did not list the kinds of features I would have expected - like print only black and white - or convert color to different levels of grey - adjustable, for readability, full preview, maybe remove or swap colors, like if my printer is having problems with one or more color cartridges - blocked print head etc, special low ink fonts - ie fonts that are shot full of holes - still easily read but use much less ink, etc - whats on offer seems very basic.

After installing, it made "CleverPrint" my default printer (without asking), but I used that opportunity to print two pages on one, and it worked perfectly. Although I don't like that it changed my preferences, I think this is a good application that I will be able to make use of. It's easy and straightforward and has a lot of potential for me, so thank you.

I also used to use Fineprint and used it very often for various projects. I am looking forward to having this on my computer since I have often thought that it would be great to have something similar for the amount of pages I print doing my family tree. I like having a hard copy of info but it does not have to be full size and will be easier to store also. Thanks for reading my mind GOTD!

Looks a decent piece of software with some useful features.

As usual there are several people giving a thumbs down or suggesting alternatives without trying it or fully reading everything about it on the publishers website. Activelive, the #1 poster must have a version of windows that nobody else has seen if he thinks that the default printing feature of windows can do all that cleverprint can do.

I have sill to work out how cleverprint deals with automatic printing on both sides of the paper as there doesn't seem to be anything more than a manual way of doing things which is awkward when my network printer is nowhere near the computer I do most things on.

Downloaded and installed on Win 7 x64 fine. I added the GCD file to the file location before running. I didn't get a request to install the German language pack.

It has a decent interface and a few nice features but I won't really use it so I won't be keeping it.

If you print a lot this could be useful as for me not so much.

Thanks anyway!
