What's the point of a program that monitors, tells you there's a problem, and does nothing?
It should monitor and repair.
Some maintenance programs perform inspections and repairs when they run, but they don't monitor!

I doubt this has any benefit over the HD sentinel as it probably only reads the S.M.A.R.T. health status parameters the drive maintains itself.

What software are people using to manually run TRIM commands to clean up the garbage on an external usb connected SSD to keep it in healthy condition?

Reply   |   Comment by ray hines  –  2 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

ray hines, The TRIM command does not pass through the USB bridging chipsets used in just about ALL USB caddies so there is no 3rd party software available that correctly TRIMs free space on USB attached SSD storage devices. Without specialised SSD firmware that recognises a zeros sector write as a TRIM command there is no way to do it. There have been rumors that some makers have such specialised firmware but I am not aware of which SSDs do this.

By the time SMART data reports an error state it's ALREADY HAPPENED! and cannot be reversed. The only preventative SMART details are operating temperature, seek errors and UDMA CRC errors. they are indications of conditions that could/would lead to eventual early failure and should prompt remediating action like improving cooling or cabling... Other than that it's not of any significant preventative use.

How bout SSDs?
Or is this program only for actual hard drives?

ship-of-fools, Good question. I just checked the webpage, and it says " Supports all common hard drives

Many hundreds of thousands of HDD and SSD hard drives are already supported. "

ship-of-fools,

Did you look at the sample screenshots provided above? The first one clearly shows a KINGSTON SSD drive in it, so that should answer question...

For SSDs most manufacturers offer their own management/diagnostic software (i.e., Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive, etc.) which do a good job providing options for their hardware. The only downside is that they're pretty arrogant and assume your computer only exists as a life-support system for them so they tend to automatically set things in Task Scheduler to check for update daily, etc. I just want to run it on demand so they're only installed in a virtual machine or sandbox not to pollute my main machine.

Anyone know how this compares to Hard Drive Sentinel offered here before.

From the screenshots, this program seems fairly limited in the information it provides. Hard Disk Sentinel (which is occasionally given away for free on GOTD and other sites) is vastly superior.

UPDATE. I tried using a different email and it worked! It seems this program dosn't like Gmail.

There has been a problem with e-mail on this site for the past 2 or so months and when reported they just blame the e-mail provider. I had used gmx for years without issue until recently when both the daily e-mail and download link e-mails stopped coming. I tried another gmx account, same thing. Tried my, very reliable, zoho account and still nothing. They blame the provider yet I've had no issues receiving any other e-mails using these providers. I try a disposable e-mail like 10minute mail and the download link comes in seconds! I can't explain it.

jboy, the emails look spammy to email providers that check during the connection and so they are dropped. Disposable email providers don't car so much about spam so the script generated spammy looking emails are accepted.

Thanks for your input TK but I just find it hard to believe that various e-mail providers all got together at the same time and said lets drop GOTD emails without marking them as spam and without telling the recipient. I have a specific address I use just for such e-mails and no other sender has been impacted. Oddly, I received the e-mail from here notifying me about your reply to my message so it does not seem they are blocking the domain.

When I first reported it here, the help person suggested I get a gmail account as they "have no problems with gmail" Well, A, I guard my privacy and don't use their search engine and I certainly don't want their email and, B, based on BigCol's post, there are now problems receiving them there too!

Additionally, based on the thumbs-up on my post, it would appear there are others this is happening to. I am left believeing the problem in on this site's end and not the fault of gmx or zoho, or gmail or whatever other site's users are having issues.

I'm not sweating it, I check both this and the game site daily and if there is something I want that needs a download link, I will use 10minutemail.

Downloaded, ran program and got a pop up to enter details. Completed form as required, it then brings up a splash page to say an email has been sent. BUT it doesn't actually complete and the circular thing just keeps spinning and no emails are sent despite trying 4 or 5 times. My email is correct, there is nothing in my spam folder. Unable to use, please advise.

Specialists from Microsoft tell that any damage what can go into lossing of anything from hard drive can be done only by throwing it into a fire or a kvass. What can this software protect from, if we don't talk about such issues ?

Muflon, are you differently abled?

BobbyR, I am not differently abled besides those things which I talked about before. However, I'm not also going to use this program after accidentally burning my hard drive too, (even) if you feel being able to call it different ability
