I installed and activated on a Windows 10 64 bit machine and everything was fine. Immediately after I registered the program, I tried to access the drop and drag screen to unrar a large file. However the cursor turned into an 'X' and nothing happened. I emailed the developer, and he responded in about 10 minutes asking for more information. However in that time, I'd closed the program and re-opened it and discovered that now the drop and drag screen was working fine. It seems helpful to close the program after activation and registration on some systems. I found the unraring process and compression very fast and efficient. Plus, I appreciated the opportunity to right click any compressed file and choose the option of de-compressing to a certain place or just to the place where the original file was.

I know some people have cited there favourite prgrams, but I really appreciate discovering this one - without further trial and error with others - as it does everything I want well. Getting fed up with nag and threat messages from WinRar.

Thanks Developer and GAOTD.

Installed on a Win 10 64 bit machine works fine like it should except the right click start menu would not work in letting me select the control panel or many other services, uninstalled and was able to right click again. Found the problem it is in the setup script, I do not want to give details here because I would need to email what I found. if you would allow me to contact you I will with what I found out. it has to do with the RegAsm command in the setup script for the 64 bit system. Please reply here if you would allow me to contact you at above mentioned emaill address, philipp.elhaus@gmx.net.

Interest product for year range 1985 to 2000. The question that comes to my mind is why spend the time and processing power to compress better that standard zip (which works fine and has worked for years and will not all of a sudden need some proprietary unzip formula if not used for a few years)? Disk space (and now the "wonderful" cloud space) is abundant and much cheaper that the time and processing power wasted on a special zip for a fractional increase in space and a possible big downside if suddenly it no longer works?

Sounded promising to me ...

... But the reality proved:
1. inefficient interface... opening an explorer interface in the end ? omg - FREE software does better
2. same with compression ratio
3. finally the same with speed

So what is this good for...?

beside all this: My personal biggest drawback: I miss the possibility to integrate into TotalCommander

I will not be downloading and installing BulkZip File Compressor 7.4 from Northstone.
The reason is not because BulkZip File Compressor 7.4 is lousy or crashes my PC - cannot comment on that since I never tried it.
***
The reason is: Tyranny of the established user base of other compression software.
***
The competition (most of them free and portable) is simply terrific.
They are too good. Tried and tested. Proven over many years. They are 100% reliable.
With such wonderful free and portable alternatives, there really is no need for me to try BulkZip File Compressor 7.4.
Claims of high compression by BulkZip File Compressor 7.4 may be dubious; but even if true - the point users want to say is : "Who cares?". Nowadays 2TB (or bigger) hard discs are so cheap.

Some examples of the sterling competition are:
7Zip-portable
Bandizip-portable
IZArc2Go-portable
Pea-Extractor-portable
PeaZip (by GiorgioTani)-portable
WinRAR-portable
ZipGenius (not portable)

Must you be so negative? Developers are trying to bring out new products and appreciate constructive feedback to improve these products not just a 'I'm not trying this because the competition is too good' kind of attitude. Give them a break and be a bit more thoughtful in your attitude and communication. Frankly, I appreciate the opportunity to try a variety of free products to see if they have any value for me.

I have had this before. I have Windows 10 64 bit and had problems after installing BulkZip 7.4. Maybe it is exclusive to my computer only, but I thought I would mention it to those of you who may have the same problem or possibly might not be aware of it.

BTW: I noticed this issue when I was using Windows 8.1 64 bit also.

After installing this software and restarting my computer I noticed that using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 64 bit that when I right click over the START MENU button that most of the commands would not work like selecting CONTROL PANEL, COMMAND PROMPT and a few others. While those selections would load and work from other menu's it would not work from the right click start menu selection. After uninstalling this software and rebooting the issue went away right away.

Also, another irritating issue I had with this software, there seems to be no way that I could find to turn off the introduction screen. And yes I tried checking and unchecking that show introduction at start selection several times even running as ADMINISTRATOR. That's very irritating having to look at that screen and make an extra CLOSE selection every time you want to zip or unzip software.

Also, I have a quick question for the developer, if you look at the license registration I believe it says the license is valid for like 27 days or something like that. Does this mean the software stops working after that date? Or does this mean that you can no longer get updates after that date? Or is this just a 30 day trial? Or even worse, does this mean the program will auto check for an update and once updated will only function as a trial? How can you turn off auto updating?

Hi Jack,

the Bug you mentioned was encountered by many more users today and we try to fix it - currently we are still investigating how this happens, it seems to be due to some specific setting or environment. If you can mail me a screenshot to philipp.elhaus@gmx.net i would be very thankful.

This introduction issue should not have happened. It's meant to appear at the first start ever, then never again and only on request via the menu. We will look into this. We had this before, but it should not happen.

Regarding the license, you can test it for 21 days and then there is an additional 7 days (=28 in total) until you need to register or the program will be unusable. We think thats fair, as when you like something you should pay for it. Todays giveaway is different: The Giveaway gives you full and unlimited access to a particular version but without updates of any kind.

Regarding Auto-Update de-activation, i have added that to the list. Thanks for the input. If you provide me with your email address i will mail you a free key that is not restricted to the terms of todays giveaway.

Sounds like the company wanting us the "customer" to become the beta tester (something like Microsoft does!).

Think I'll be giving this one a miss.

Reply   |   Comment by Garry Fraser  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

Not really, but no matter how hard we try, it's impossible for us to find all bugs on our own.

We can easily track and eliminate the big and obvious 80% ; but for the smaller 20% that depend e.g. on individual system configuration (or special usage cases), we are dependent on user feedback as we are simply not having the capacity/personell.

As one also tends to "get blind" on a topic once you're too long into it, we really appreciate any constructive input from users to further improve the product for you people.

Reply   |   Comment by Philipp Elhaus  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

Exactly my sentiment Garry. Nobody asks you to find all bugs, but what is reported here are rather fundamental shortcomings that should be addressed before going public - even free. End customer is NOT your tester!

Requires NET Framework 4.0 on Windows XP. I went to the official MS website to install it but I don't trust any third party links that's not MS to link to MS Components to install. Maybe your installer should point to the official MS site to download the component. Otherwise it's a great file compression utility with so many features.

This is buggy .Net4 applicationa that is just GUI for few commandline tools from different vendors. Even you just DL .NET4 from M$ site and install it, that `tool` crashes violently on each menu icon press or just by shell integration event.

http://www.bulkzip.com/de/imprint/ shows registration NORTHSTONE CONSULTING LTD (Registered In: England and Wales) but no address and phone number. In the European Union there is a very strict impressum duty (name, address, phone). This could become costly. Chosing "Philipp Elhaus" as a pseudo doesn't prove anything.

http://www.bulkzip.com/de/main/comp_compar_2/ shows a list of compression factors dependant of parameters used by hbulkzip and results of "competitors" but no telling whehter derived from a single file or mean value of different files were used neither which file formats.

For me the only relevant criterium is compression factor as there are fast processors nowadays and for slower ones with bulk compression you can do what you like in between. And compression factor is dependant especially on several criteria like file type, e.g. it's useless to work on a lossy file format any further.

But I don't trust to any comparisons using only a single file. Statistics mean results derived from quite a number of experiments.

Hi,
BandiZip is a common Zipper without own format. Its not referenced/tested as its equal to default windows compression ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_(file_format) ).

The extra value of a few percentages better compression and speed is not very high on my wishllist. The website of Bulkzip (Northstone is a German company it seems) stood out however, in a negative way. A clickable (visitors)tracking icon, a forum based op phpbb, plus a big "support intel core" icon?

Reply   |   Comment by Rasta  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Please elaborate your suggestions in detail that we can improve the website.

Reply   |   Comment by Philipp Elhaus  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Aside from the things I mentioned (trackericon, intelcoresupport, phpbb) there are a some things like a uniform lettertype, uniform size buttons, uniform colors, a navigation bar that is visible without scrolling, clear division into sections of information that belong together (e.g. grouping of navigationlinks under parentlinks (the first navigationlinks in the left vertical bar are "benchmarks, software screenshots listings and awards"). Would not be a navigationbar like Home, Download, Purchase, Features, How to, and support be more logical and easier?).
Big meaningless logo´s, like from softonic "tested virus free", or "Premium quality, the best choice" or "100% secure" do not work anymore, they only generate an averse effect. These are just a few points, making it tablet proof would be the next step perhaps.

In stead of a seperate phpbb you could use a cms like wordpress, a cms can integrate a forum beautifully in a distinctive company design.

I gave this two quick tests. An easy one, first: Moby-Dick (1195K). I tried it against 7Zip, using the maximum compression of both programs. 7Zip got it down to 385K, Bulk to 495K, both very quickly. Then I tried something much more difficult, a 920Mb video file. 7Zip took about six minutes to "compress" it to 895Mb - Bulk crashed immediately. I shall not be keeping BulkZip.

Thanks for your feedback, we will investigate this.

Reply   |   Comment by Philipp Elhaus  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Update: Results depend on the method of compression selected, e.g. BulkZip Average Compression cannot be compared with 7Zip Strong. Compression underlies a time/space tradeoff and for a reliable results you need to focus on one. BulkZip has a default which gives a good balance between strength and speed that is not emphasized on one of the ends (Speed or Strength)

Depending on the crash, we need more details from your end. If feasible please reproduce and send screenshot as well as CrashLog directly to my Email philipp.elhaus@gmx.net . Thanks in advance :) !

Reply   |   Comment by Philipp Elhaus  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Update: If you want to perform a direct comparison, you need to select either "Best Speed" or "Extreme Compression" in BulkZip Compression Options next to the file format selector; this will than output the fastest possible compression at a decent default rate or the strongest possible rate.

Reply   |   Comment by Philipp Elhaus  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

'7Zip got it down to 385K, Bulk to 495K' Correct me if I'm wrong but I was certain less 'K' means a smaller size... if so isn't David's test clearly indicating Bulk was unable to compress the 1st item more than 7zip - and if that's the case then how does this company possibly claim their 'file compressor ranks first in multiple benchmarks'? Am I missing something, or is this product not even as good as 7zip? Thanks. :)

We need to look deeper into this. Usually it achieves at least equal with 7Z. We may need to adjust max dictionary size, block size and ram usage allowed for the extreme mode in an update to correct this. I'am sorry that this first test dissapointed you. We will try our best to get that fixed.

Looking forward to trying this program, information on their website is really interesting regarding compression methods.
Installed and registered without any problems, opened up to the simplest of interfaces that also contained useful information in the introduction.

Decided to try it on today's download zip file; unfortunately it crashed with an unhandled exception message, tested it on another zip file with exactly the same result.

Decided to test it compressing some files but had problems with the selection process.

AverZip had no problems working on the same files; it also has a much better interface and will remain my preferred compression file program.
