Dear GOTD users,
we were reported that there are some temporary failures of the registration system on
the developers end.

Please try to register a program a little later or report it directly to the developer.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Helen, I have the same problem and spent about two hours trying to get past "Whoops".
I (and probably many other) would appreciate a re-run of the offer as soon as Franzis gets the problem solved. As of this moment, only 44 minutes are left to take advantage of the offer.

I never received my registration email with the license. Kept getting a "whoops" error message, even though I've had an account for years. So now I can't get this program?

1st time I have activation problems with FRANZIS.
As others have already stated, the download may be difficult (this is gaotd responsiility though) and you may have to use vpn to actually download this.
But after installation, the 2nd time I input the serial during the opening of the software, it gives error of "internet connection error" many times.
Will try to bypass somehow, either vpn or retry another day, but this is not good and not standard problem of FRANZIS software.

After clicking on the internet button as laid out in the instructions, I filled in my email address. The page refreshed and said I had registered before and asked me to fill in my email address and password. When I submitted these I also get the "Whoops, looks like something went wrong" error so no licence key arrived. I tried with a different email address and got the same response, "Whoops, looks like something went wrong" error for a second time.

I waited and waited and waited for the e-mail needed to register the programme, but nothing arrived (and yes, I checked my spam folder and yes, I entered my e-mail address correctly, and yes, I checked all the required boxes). I tried to start all over from the beginning and now it says I need to enter my password in addition to my e-mail address, but I never set one up because I was never asked to and now there's nowhere to do that. It just gives me the choice between entering my non-existent password and clicking on a button to say I forgot my non-existent password.

Oh well, enough time wasted. Thanks anyway.

Update:

Running win 10 Home

I decided to install 5 and I'm happy to say the installation went smoothly even registration was fast (approx. 1 minute).
On the first run it asked for the serial no. I received and so activated the program. Here I think it is because i already have an account with publisher FRANZIS Verlag GmbH.
Then went back and checked the 4, it was still there and still fully working, I was surprised but not that much. So I just uninstalled 4 and happy to say that 5 is a keeper.
Thanks GOTD & FRANZIS Verlag GmbH.

Mohammed Sharif, It's good to have a positive report as otherwise it's mostly negative (as they are the people who want help).
I found the first time I registered a Franzis product it was a lot of running around, but like you once I had an account the new products just popped up in that quite easily.

I have come to dread anything from Frazis simply because of the registration problems. They always seem to have the most complex and problem causing registration of any on here. With that being said, I like black and white photos so I spent the time fighting with the software to get it registered. Learning curve isn't bad at all. I should also note I am not an editor at all. This is the third editing program I've actually owned and the others have been used for just a couple pics (and I just used the auto fix feature). Upper right has a display window that shows the original and the changes done, so you have real time view of the difference. Presets are... lame. They don't seem to really change much and the ones that do, changes dramatically and makes it very dark. Going through the manual setting was incredibly simple, and the really lets you fine tune, which I suppose is the point of them. The 4 pictures I tested on was rather impressive, and this is one I will actually keep, and probably use more than a couple times. So, thank you Franzis, but FIX THE REGISTRATION!

A color image contains more data per pixel than a B&W or grayscale version, and it's always been possible to simply drop that extra color data to turn a color photo into B&W, e.g. selecting B&W from the printer dialog. Adobe's Lightroom lets you take some of that color data that would normally be lost and convert it into additional grayscale values for sometimes stunning B&W photos, but the actual process is almost completely in your hands -- BLACK & WHITE projects more or less automates it. Since there is not one conversion or setting that works for every photo -- you might enhance darker tones for example using data from a color photo's red, orange, yellow etc. -- BLACK & WHITE projects gives you a bunch of presets and controls you can use to create the image that looks best to you. Remember that you're repurposing color data, adding to the luminance data that was recorded by the camera, so you're creating something completely new. Indulge your creativity and enjoy.

Generally all of Franzis-developed software [they do sell some 3rd party stuff] comes in a wrapper when it's given away -- I usually save the real setup file from the user temp folder: Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Local\ Temp\. Files are stored in the program's folder & in the user folders. It's normally possible to just copy the program's folder to another copy of Windows, run & activate it, and it'll add the necessary files in the Users folder. When plugins are included, since the giveaways are older versions, they very often do not detect recent image editing apps, so you have to place the plugins yourself. I normally place a copy of the plugins in the Franzis program's folder... in my experience the plugins will work in some apps if you place a copy of the plugin(s) in the proper folder, but others will only work if you use a shortcut to the plugins in the app's folder instead.

Well, after numerous attempts finally got through the first hurdle and then came to the next "Enter key" hurdle for activation. Once again, after four or five attempts it went through and I was successfully registered and activated.

I currently own Silver so am curious to try this to compare the two. However, I cannot get past the email screen. When I click to go on, I get this message:

And then nothing.

Had numerous problems trying to activate the program. The first time, I clicked on the "Internet" button on the installer, I get a message that said, "Whoops, something went wrong." I was able to switch internet connections. I was able to get an activation key and entered it into the program, installed the software. When I ran the program for the first time, I was asked to enter the activation key the second time. It said there was a connection problem. I switched back to my regular internet connection and it told me that the activation key was used already and that multiple activations were not allowed. At that point, I gave up.

I've had a number of their products and they're all well worth downloading but for some reason every time I try and install this one on my Macbook, I get the error message, "The application “Setup_Mac” can’t be opened." Fortunately, as it's dual boot with Windoze 10 I'll install it there instead.

Reply   |   Comment by Philip Turner  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Philip Turner, I don't have a Mac, but in a previous Franzis Giveaway someone said:
"Hold the control button down when you open the app and it should give you the option to open it. Or open the system pref, security and unlock and open it."
Is this any use?

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Philip Turner, Hi. I get the same error message. "You do not have permission to open the application “Setup_Mac”." I have a new Mi Mac Mini and haven't had any issues installing other software. FRANZIS Verlag GmbH you should correct this and offer it again. I don't have a dual boot setup. Thanks.

Hi

Is this the same as the 'BLACK & WHITE projects 5 elements' I got back in 2019?

Reply   |   Comment by Mike  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Mike, I'm assuming it's the Standard version, in-between Elements and Pro. Although as I have 6 Pro I won't be installing it... I'd give it a go!

So without much ado here's a (yet again) updated version of my guide to using it... I seem to spend a noticeable chunk of my life writing these thinks for the Franzis tools (a 30 min update today), but I think this is an excellent tool and I'd like people not to be put off by any learning curve. Oh and the Franzis stuff is usually a pain to register if you haven't done one before, but do persevere as IMHO this is a good one. I'd use a real e-mail address to register rather than a temporary one (like 10minutemail.net), as it'll help next time they give something away (Sharpen Projects Pro is fabulous BTW). Okay, ado over...

Personally I think BWP is the best B+W conversion tool available (note I paid for it), either if you spend the time to learn it, or even if you just dive in and ignore many of the features. You can do an amazing variety of images that look completely different from one starting image. I once did 19 B+W versions of a starting colour image for someone, and would maintain all were significantly different.

To use - Load a picture, play with the canned effects on the left side, play with the Film Type on the right side panel (which should start on the “Finalise” tab). At the top of that panel you can choose a colour filter to apply to the original (assuming it's a colour image, the same as putting a filter on the lens and using B+W film), either as a preset or use the sliders (the presets just move the sliders, e.g. Yellow -> 60/120). At the bottom of the panel you can select toning options (which would be a printing technique back in the day), which is the same theory of having a collection of presets which set sliders.

Changing to "Expert" in the right panel you can add filters from the list at the top, select them in the middle of the panel and tweak their effects at the bottom (may need scrolling down). (I'd ignore that until you are comfortable using it.)

The boxes at the top of the left panel just filter the list of presets that are listed in that panel, so ignore them initially (although using the favourites stars to select presets you like and then filtering on them is handy). On a faster computer you can use the Eye icon on the toolbar to disable the preview mode and show the final image in the main window, which IMHO is worth doing.

When saving the final image note that the first dialog, where it asks for the title, is going to write that over the image, it isn't the file name. That is the point you do cropping though.

The main disadvantage is the lack of full Undo operations.

The thing to get your brain around is it a huge pile of image processing tools, which are gathered together into presets in the left pane. All those options do is select a bunch of processing tools and choose options for them, so they are infinitely tweakable in the Expert tab of the right pane once you're up to speed (and if you want to). IMHO there is no need to tweak anything in Expert 99% of the time. (Although stuff like modifying a vignette can be handy sometimes.)

BTW I bought a copy of BWP retail some time ago, but when they had a discount price - which they do quite often, so I'd say rather than paying the full price for Franzis' stuff (if you're not in a rush) just sign-up for the newsletter and see if a deal appears, which it usually will. Basically 99% of the B+W images I post online came out of B+W Projects.

(I don't know if the Standard version comes with Raw support, but if it does, or you upgrade to a paid version, the next part is on Raw file importing... otherwise skip this part.)
Usually the GAotD releases come with an old Raw file import library (e.g. from 2014) so straight-out-of-the-box won't support more recent cameras. However you can just copy a later version of FreeImage.dll over the one in the program's directory to help with that (although it's still not completely up-to-date).

Look in "C:\Program Files\Franzis\BW projects 5" and see it has an old version of FreeImage.dll, which is the library that decodes Raw images from your camera (you don't care if you only plan to use it with JPEGs). I replaced this with the newest version I have (once I've shut the program down so don't have a sharing error) which is:
FreeImage .dll 6924,800 .a.. 26-02-19
Alas usually you can download later versions from Franzis, but the downloads haven't been updated so you have to go to:
https://freeimage.sourceforge.io/download.html
and download the DLL (second link down the page)
Unzip the archive and choose the correct copy (x32/x64 - if you're running the 32-bit version of Windows your computer won't have a directory "C:\Program Files (x86)") of FreeImage.dll from FreeImage\Dist (which is 3.18.0.0, same as the one I used). I did install and test this exact file and it does work with supported cameras. You don't need the archive afterwards.

Note these are still not completely up-to-date, so recent cameras may not have Raw support and you have to use the JPG or make a 16-bit TIF file in your favourite Raw processing software (or just try 3-5 bracketed JPGs).
If you have a Mac you'll need to get the OSX version of FreeImage from SourceForge and replace the existing one, wherever it might be.

Good luck and enjoy!

P.S. If it doesn't look good on your high-DPI display (i.e. 4k/5k monitor) I'd recommend, on Windows 10, that you right mouse button the program, select Properties, then the Compatibility tab, click "Change high DPI settings", tick "Override high DPI scaling..." at the bottom of the next dialogue and select "System (Enhanced)", or if that doesn't work well then "System".

P.P.S. one other thing, sometimes they screw up and send English users an e-mail in German rather than English, just be laid back about it... it's part of their charm (err...)
