BitSilo creates timestamped backups for files and directories you specify.
- Create multiple backup sets, each containing a different set of files or directories to be backed up on a daily/weekly/monthly schedule.
- Create a full backup to save all the specified files; create an incremental backup to save only those files that have changed since the last backup.
- Exclude files from the backup using any part of the file folder or name.
- Flexible management of disk space used by backup archives.
- Restore files from any backup using a query language to find files.
- Backup files can be stored in a BitSilo "Silo" format for efficiency, or in a normal folder, or as a zip file.
- Automatic removal of old backups; cleanup rules govern which recent backups to keep.
- Verify (compare) files in any backup against the original source files, either automatically after each run, or at any later time.
- Use the free utility SiloExplorer to access any BitSilo archive (from any computer) and extract files from it.

This program tiotal runs in the background so I don't know what it's doing and I have no control over it.

Brian, it only runs in the background if you have minimized BitSilo. Try showing the main window, and showing the Backup Journal for lots of information about what is happening. Please read the FAQ for more info.

I installed BitSilo on my Windows 7 Pro 32-bit machine, but it refuses to run.
I tried running as Administrator; I shut down and restarted the machine; all to no avail.
Autoruns cannot find it. When I try to run it, Program Manager will show it is running (or at least trying to run), but then it dies after 10 or 15 seconds.

I assume that, despite its claim that it will run on 32-bit Windows 7, it has never been tested on a native 32-bit machine. We all (should) know that WOW64 (the emulator allowing 64-bit machines to run 32-bit programs) is not infallible. Over the last few years I have collected a number of programs evidencing this problem (to name a few: Awe Eraser 3.4.0.0, HippoEdit 1.61.53.0, Easy Context Menu 1.6, Awe Clone 2.2.0.0, Thundersoft GIF Converter 2.3.0, MSTech Search in Contents 1.5.4.173).

I suspect that the problem occurs frequently because analysts are expensive, and younger programmers, who are trusted to do the analyst's job, have never seen a 32-bit machine.

From the above you will understand that this old guy continues to work with (efficient) 32-bits.

Upon trying to install, I always get "Error writing to file: C:\Program Files (x86)\BitSilo\BitSilo.exe". I tried running the installer as admin, and the result is the same. I tried installing to a different direction, and it doesn't write out the exe. Upon trying to repair it after installing in an alternate directory, it again says it can't write to the directory even though I can open it up in explorer and add a file. 5 dlls are in the directory, and 2 RTF files, but no EXE.

WK, I am getting exactly the same on my Win 10 desktop system. I then tried to install it on my Win 7 laptop and first got a SecureAnywhere "Threat Detected" saying Malware Group: W32.Trogan.Gen at location C:\program files (x86)\bitsilo\bitsilo.exe . Then got the same "Can't write to" message. All the .dll's are there, but no .exe

WK, Perhaps you have a virus checker that is deleting the exe in real-time as you install? BitSilo obviously contains no viruses, but there may be a "false positive". Try setting your virus checker to ignore any file in C:\Program Files (x86)\BitSilo\BitSilo.exe and re-installing.

Will this automatically backup sub-folder in specified folders or do the sub-folders have to be listed separately in order to be backed up?

FJS, Yes, sub-folders are included in the backup automatically. You can exclude any particular subfolders of the folder being backed up, using the "Exclude" box at the right of the "Included files/folders" area.

can you backup files to a network mapped drive?

Cyber, Yes, you set the backup folder (target for backups) of a backup set to be any addressable folder, including a network drive (e.g. \\192.168.1.6\share\backups), a mountable drive (assuming the drive letter is fixed), or any folder on a fixed disk attached to your computer. Please read the FAQ for more info!

Installation allways stops with the error " installation directory must be on a local harddrive" on every drive i tried

Can BitSilo do a full system backup or Windows 10 Pro?
If so, can it restore the backup to a different PC?

dan, BitSilo is a folder-based backup program. You have to specify which folder(s) you back up. It can restore files from a backup to a different PC using the free utility SiloExplorer.

Since BitSilo is only folder-based and does not restore the entire OS, why do I need SiloExplorer in addition to Bit-Silo? i.e., what feature is Bit-Silo lacking that SiloExplorer provides?

dan, You need SiloExplorer in case you want to restore files to a new machine, from an archive created on another machine (using BitSilo).

Why does Windows 10 care where my personal files were created? After all, I can always copy a file from one PC to another without using any OEM software.

This looks interesting.

The description states: "Use the free utility SiloExplorer to access any BitSilo archive (from any computer) and extract files from it."

MollieSoft, as the developer, could you elaborate on security as, apparently, this software provides (opens up) access from other computers.

For example, if I were to take my laptop to a place with public Wi-Fi (say, a McDonald's), would there be any potential danger from hackers due to public sharing/access to my files/folders via something like left-open ports that I was unaware of due to installing this software?

HMarx, BitSilo does not "open up" access to other computers. It does not open ports, etc. There are no such security issues.

The archives opened by SiloExplorer are archiv files that are locally addressable by the computer on which SIloExplorer has been installed. Hopes this clears up any confusion.

Hi folks,
The instructions in the giveaway Readme.txt say "NB: After you have successfully registered the software, please do not update it or reinstall, otherwise the registered version would be turned into a trial."
This is INCORRECT. You can reinstall (on the same machine), or update to a new version, and your lifetime license will still be perfectly valid.
